  • Notes
    • Closely connected with education in New Hamburg is Mr. Gottfried Rebelski who for the past decade has tilled with credit to himself and satisfaction to the ratepayers the position of vice principal of the public school. Mr. Rebelski is a tried educationist and a self-made man. He was born in Germany 38 years ago and emigrated to Canada with his parents 3 years later. The family settled at Bloomingdale and here the subject of this sketch lived until lie was eighteen years of age. When a mere child his father died and he was compelled to assist his widowed mother in rearing his brothers and sisters. After 9 years of age he attended school only in the winter, and from 14 to 18 worked steadily in a factory. But his ambition to secure an education was paramount and he finally secured a Third Class Certificate and began to teach in 1892. When his certificate expired 3 years later he secured Second Class Certificate, after six-months' attendance at the Berlin High School. He immediately took a course at the Ottawa Normal School and obtained a Second Class Professional Certificate. After teaching one year at Pine Grove, be accepted the Vice Principal-ship of the New Hamburg School in 1898 where he has remained ever since with the exception of the first half of 1908, when he took charge of the office in the capacity of Secretary Treasurer, of the Schierholtz Furniture Co. On September st he returned to his old position. The New Hamburg School has always had a German department which has been most capably conducted by Mr. Rebelski. He has proved a most successful teacher and a progresssive citizen As Sec.-Treas. of the Band he did touch for that organization and was instrumental in getting a band stand erected. Ile was for many years Sec.-Treas. of the Football and Baseball Association.

      Death of Mr. G. Rebelski

The news was received here with profound regret that Mr. Gottfried Rebelski had passed away at his home in Kitchener early yesterday morning. He had been ill several weeks but the seriousness of his condition was not generally known so the news of his death came as a shock and caused deep regret among his host of friends in town. The late Mr. Rebelski was born in Germany and came to Canada with his parents when a young boy. He spent his boyhood days in Bloomingdale and later attended the Kitchener High School, after which he entered the teaching profession. He taught school for a few years at Pine Grove, New Prussia and Pine Hill, and in 1898 came to New Hamburg where he was assistant principal. He was a very successful and efficient teacher. Six years ago he resigned and became connected with the Schierholtz Furniture Co., which was then organized here. About a year ago he disposed of his interests in the furniture factory and removed to Kitchener. He reached the age of 50 years, 9 months and 22 days. He was married to Miss Agnes Ernst of this town, who and one son Ernst, are left to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father. He is also survived by one sister and one brother. Particulars of the funeral have not yet been received here. He emigrated to Canada in 1873.
