  • Notes
    • John Wernette, 84, pioneer resident of Michigan, died suddenly yesterday morning from heart trouble at his home, 544 Cass ave, SE. Mr. Wernette was striken while arising and died shortly after his daughter, Miss Rose Wernette, who heard him fall, reached his side. He had enjoyed excellent health pratically all his life and his death came as a shock to his many relatives and friends.

Mr. Wernette was born in Waterloo county, Canada, July 8, 1838, and married Elizabeth Miller, May 8, 1860.

He had been a proprietor of a hotel at St. Clemins [St. Clements], Canada, for some years and came to Michigan in the spring of 1856. He and his wife settled on a farm in Campbell township, Ionia county, after Mr. Wernette himself had cleared the land of timber and built his own house. Here he lived until 1872 when the family moved to Gaines township.

He retired in 1907 and came to Grand Rapids, spending the remainder of his life at his home on Cass ave.

Mr. Wernette was an active member of the Holy Name society and St. Andrew's cathedral.

Besides his widow, he is survived by eight children, J. J. Wernette of the J. J. Wernette Engineering company; Mrs. C. D. Freeman and Miss Rose Wernette of Grand Rapids; Mrs. Fred Starr of San Francisco [San Fernando]; Alexander Wernette of Caledonia; Mrs. John Neuman of Pasadena, Cal.; J. I. Wernette of Glendale, Cal.; and Sister Mary Leonessa of the Notre Dame order, Mandelia [Mankato], Minn.; two sisters, two brothers, 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
