The Late Mrs. Samuel Bricker ~ 67 Years of Married Life ~ 75 Descendants Living

One by one the original settlers of this Province are passing away. On Thursday last the remains of Mrs. Samuel Bricker Sr., were carried to their last resting place in Port Elgin cemetery. Her maiden name was Catherine Overholt and she was born in Clinton township, county of Welland, on December 14th, 1813. In his interesting book, "Among the Forest Trees", the Rev. Joseph H. Hilts records how Mr. Overholt, father of Mrs. Bricker was killed by Indians on the road leading from Hamilton to Grimsby, not far from where Winona Station now is. She belonged to a Mennonite family and in 1835 on Feb. 21st, was married to Samuel Bricker at Beamsville. The Bricker family were among the Pennsylvania Dutch who came to the county of Waterloo a little over a hundred years ago and took up large stretches of land and by their industry and thrift soon made the howling wilderness the scene of happy and prosperous homes. Here Samuel Bricker, who still survives, was born in 1810, more than 92 years ago. He is now weak and frail and unable to leave his room without assistance. On March 4th, 1854, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Bricker arrived in Port Elgin from Waterloo and here they lived steadily till death broke the union on Tuesday week. Mrs. Bricker was a kind, hospitable woman, much attached to her family and friends, and cherished the best traditions of the Old Mennonites to the last.

Mrs. Bricker had a family of eight, one of whom died in infancy. The surviving members of the family are D. O. Bricker, of Winnipeg; Samuel, ex-Mayor of Listowel; Moses, general agent of the Dominion Life Assurance Co., Waterloo; Solomon, residing in Port Elgin, Mrs. Bowers, of Berlin, Mrs. John McIntosh and Mrs. Wm. Stafford, both of Port Elgin. Of direct descendants the departed leaves these seven children, 81 grandchildren, and 37 great grand children who are all alive but three.

The old Mennonites are fast passing away. Their simple lives, plain manners and customs, habits of work and thrift, their sincere piety, are all things worth preserving, at least in their spirit and intent. The rush and complexity of modern life have few advantages over the quieter fashion of earlier days in this country. Mr. and Mrs. Bricker lived 67 years of wedded life together and for nearly half a century their home was known to all in Port Elgin. We rather think we have no residents left in town who were here before them.
