- BARTELS, SOPHIA (Nee Schlueter)
At her home on Cooper St., Hespeler, about 11 o'clock on Wednesday morning, [May 16, 1928], in her 85th year. Relict of Frederick Bartels. She had been in her usual health until about a week ago (or after an illness of six weeks - differing reports). Death was due to a general decline. Mrs. Bartels was born in Germany. In 1868, she married and the young couple came to Canada the following year, settling on the 1st concession in Puslinch Township. There they resided until about sixteen years ago, when they gave up farming and moved to town. Mr. Bartels predeceased her twelve years ago. Mourning her loss are two sons and two daughters: Charles of Cooper St. in Hespeler; Fred of Puslinch; Mrs. Herman Prestien of Hespeler; and Mrs. McKellar of Galt. A well known and highly respected resident, with her quiet, kindly way, Mrs. Bartels made many friends. She was a member of St. James' Lutheran Church. The funeral was held from her residence on Saturday at 2. Rev. E. J. Fisher conducted the services. Pallbearers: Charles Bartels, William Bartels, Fred Bartels Jr., Fred Bartels Sr., Herman Prestien and Joe Bartels of Preston
