Death of Mr. George T. Strickland

The Reporter is called upon today to make an announcement that will be learned with the deepest regret by the majority of its readers. Mr. George T. Strickland is dead. The busy, active brain, is at rest for ever; the "old familiar form" has passed from our view; and while we bow in all humility to the will of the great Master, the feelings of natural regret at the loss of a warm friend and good citizen will and should rise to the surface.

The mention we have made in previous issues of the serious illness of Mr. Strickland will in a measure have prepared our readers for the announcement of today. What was at first thought to be a simple boil rapidly developed until it assumed a most serious aspect. During the first two weeks of his illness he suffered most severely, but bore all with a patience wonderful in a nervous temperament like his; and during the last week the parts affected became so dead that he was spared the agony of almost unendurable pain. When first attacked, Mr. Strickland had several sales advertised; and the last one he sold \endash then suffering greatly \endash was that at Mr. Dietrich's on Saturday, the 10th inst. At Mr. P. McGregor's on Tuesday, the 13th, he merely drove to the ground to open the sale, and then returned to his residence, which he was destined never to leave again in life. The progress of his disease was rapid from this time forward; and on Friday evening last he sank into a stupor from which he never rallied, but as calmly as an infant sleeping glided into his eternal rest about 1 o'clock on Saturday morning.

Mr. Strickland was born in Wedmore, /Somersetshire, England, and came to America, when quite young. He first settled in Auburn, New York State, where he married Miss Hollier. His wife did not long survive, however, and left him with the care of an infant, now Mr. John Strickland, station agent on the G. T. Rail Rockwood. When the G. W. Railway was approaching completion, Mr. Strickland came on to Paris, and at the opening of the Galt Branch of that line he was sent to Galt to look after the freight interests of the Company in this town. While occupying this position, he married Miss Alexander, of Dumfries. Shortly after the completion of the Galt and Guelph Railway, Mr. Strickland was appointed to the station agency at Hespeler, which position he occupied until bad health compelled him to relinquish it. He then returned to Galt and shortly afterward entered into partnership with Mr. John Billing (now of Bodmin, Cornwall, England) in the stove business, which business they supplemented afterward by taking out an auctioneers' license. From the day the firm of Billing & Strickland opened out business success attended the venture, and \endash the partnership having been dissolved \endash Mr. Strickland soon found his services as an auctioneer in great demand, and at the same time discarded to a great extent the stove business for the more profitable one of musical instruments and sewing machines. During all the later years of his life he devoted his energies to the extension and management of this business; and the extent to which his services were sought after as an auctioneer made his name a "household word" not only throughout Waterloo but in neighboring Counties as well. He knew not what trouble was when given the management of a sale. The interests of his employer were everything to him. In the minutest particular he was always found prepared; and to his loyalty to those who engaged him can doubtless be traced his great success.
As we have mentioned, shortly after his removal to Galt from Paris, Mr. Strickland was united in marriage to Miss Alexander. From this union there were born all of eleven children, eight of whom survive, three having died in infancy. Those surviving are \endash Mrs. R. S. Strong, jr., of Galt; Mrs. H. R. Blackwood, of Brantford; Messrs. Wm. E., Fred, Albert and James, of Galt; and the Misses Ada and Lucy, also of this town. Mrs. Strickland died in May, 1874; and in 1876 Mr. Strickland was again united in marriage to Mrs. John Dines, who survives hm. This lady proved a helpmate in the strongest sense of the word to our old friend, and made his home what a home should be to the active business man. The only other relatives on this side of the ocean are Mr. John Strickland, a well-known and respected farmer residing in Brantford Township, and a married sister, Mrs. Thomas Parker, residing in Dakota. He also leaves a brother, Edward, still residing in Wedmore, England.

While we have confined ourselves in these remarks principally to Mr. Strickland's business life, it is only meet to say that as a citizen he was active and enterprising, and carried with him the good will of all. He had a bluff, hearty manner; was an admirable judge of values and shrewd in the application of his knowledge; and his energy would make a success where other men would fail. For many years he represented Ward No. 3 in Galt Town Council, - only retiring there from a year ago last January \endash and those associated with him at the Board will be the first to bear testimony to the able manner in which he there fulfilled his trust. He was independent in work and thought, and never gave assent to what his own good sense condemned.

Mr. Strickland's funeral took place on Monday afternoon last. As a mark of respect, the Town Council walked in a body, and all the places of business were closed while the cortege was passing through the streets on its way to Trinity Church Cemetery. The attendance was very large, both from the town and country, and spoke eloquently of the esteem in which Mr. Strickland was held by those who had been associated with him in all the years that are past.

DEATH OF MR. W. E. STRICKLAND

Our townspeople were greatly shocked on Monday morning, to hear of the sudden demise of Mr. Wm. E. Strickland, auctioneer, which occurred on Sunday evening. So brief was the fatal illness that few outside his immediate friends were aware that he was confined to bed. He conducted a sale in Beverly on Tuesday and contracted a heavy cold, which settled on his lungs. He was however, attending to business up to Thursday. On Friday he became much worse and gradually sank till Sunday evening, when death occurred. Mr. Strickland, on the death of his father, continued the business which had been so successfully conducted by the late Mr. G. T. Strickland and he gave promise of becoming as successful as that gentleman had been. As an auctioneer the deceased was much esteemed by the farming community and the public generally and all sincerely regret to learn of his untimely death. The deceased had been married for some years and leaves his widow and one little child to mourn the loss of a husband and father. He was in the 29th year of his age. The funeral took place or Wednesday afternoon and was attended by a large concourse of friends. The Galt Council, Royal Arcanum, of which the deceased was a member, attended in a body.
