On his way to the Amiens front, Fahrenkopf marched through a French village lined with U.S. troops who cheered themselves hoarse. The Canadians cheered back.
Days later a German shell killed him in what was likely his first combat. He survived less than three weeks on the Western Front.

Marcella grew up on a farm near Hesson, Ontario. When W.W. II broke out, she moved to Waterloo to work at "The Sunshine" factory making smoke bombs. Wanting to do more, she enlisted in the "WRENS" (Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service) training at HMCS Conestogo in Galt (also known as Preston Springs Hotel) before being sent to Atlantic Combined Headquarters in Halifax in 1943. There she worked first as a teletype operator and later as a coder sending and deciphering top secret military correspondence to and from the European Theatre of War. In 1946 at a post-war veterans dance in Toronto, she chanced to meet an ex-serviceman from Kingston who became her permanent dance partner at their wedding in 1948. As a dedicated and loving stay-at-home mom, she encouraged both academic and creative pursuits and modeled volunteer service with St. Anthony Parish Guild and Bingo and St. Mary's CWL. Along with her exemplary culinary skills, she expressed her love of the arts through her work/play at flower arranging, painting, gardening, journal writing and playing the organ. Ever faithful, she attended Mass regularly and made several visits to shrines and one to the Holy Land. Visitation will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Thursday, December 6th from 7-9 p.m. and on Friday, December 7th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Agnes RC Church, 75 Bluevale St. N., Waterloo on Saturday, December 8th at 11 a.m. with Rev.
