New Dundee Home Shattered By Husband's and Father's Loss Due To CNR Drocourt Wreck

Edward Struck Succumbs In Parry Sound Hospital Before Wife Could Leave Toronto; Six Children Also Survive - Staff Special
    \b0

Of all the homes shattered by the wreck at Drocourt near Parry Sound yesterday, none received a more crushing blow than that of Edward Struck of New Dundee. The wife and six young children of the 31 year old CNR express clerk were left husbandless and fatherless as a result of the steel fliers crashing head-on. The New Dundee man died later in the day in the Parry Sound Hospital from scalds received from the flames and hot water which spread over the twisted cars. Struck's battle for life was a game one. His wife, informed of the crash soon after the death toll began to mount, left her New Dundee home yesterday afternoon for Parry Sound. Her race to reach her husband's bedside before his death was lost, however. When she reached Toronto, word was awaiting her there that her husband had passed away just a short time before.

Horribly Scalded - One of the worst features of the ?gly wreck was the horrible burning of Edward Struck, according to an eye witness who arrived in Toronto last night. Struck suffered besides fractures a scalding so severe that when his clothes were removed the skin from many parts of his body came with them. "I don't know what the family will do without him." Mrs. Alex Brighton, a neighbor told the Record today. "Mrs. Struck will probably return from Toronto this evening. I received word from her last night that she had gone no further on receiving the news of her husband's death."

What makes the tragedy even more appalling is that the husband and father was on his way he after a trip west on the National flier from Toronto. "He used to come to see his family every two days." Mrs. Brighton said. She explained that for two weeks he would be on the local run which would permit him to visit his home every day or two. Then for two weeks he would be transferred to a route farther from his home. "He never lost an opportunity of visiting his home," Mrs. Brighton added.

Everyone in the New Dundee district knew "Eddie" Struck, the neighbor continued. He was one of the most popular young men of the district and his tragic death has shocked the countryside. Probably only one of his children grasps to any extent the significance of the accident. Delmer, aged 11, greeted the announcement with understanding. The others, George, Doris, Miriam, Billy and Alice, are mercifully unaware of its consequences. Neighbors do not know what funeral arrangements will be made. It is expected that the body will be brought for burial to New Dundee where the late Mr. Struck attended the Lutheran Church.
