New Dundee's Grand Old Lady Celebrates 98 Birthday, at Home.

NEW DUNDEE-New Dundee's "Grand Old Lady", Mrs. Hannah Sheard celebrated her 98th birthday at her home on Bridge St. on Tuesday. Despite the fact that she has been bedfast for over 6 years, the merry twinkle in her eyes reminds one of the fun-loving girl she must have been almost a century ago. Mrs. Sheard still takes a keen interest in the activities about her and is always pleased when her neighbors and friends call in to chat for a few minutes. As a special treat for her birthday this year, Mrs. Sheard is favored in having one of her granddaughters, Miss Mary Johannes of Saskatoon, Sask. visiting her. Miss Johannes arrived on Monday in time to help celebrate the occasion and in the evening a family gathering was arranged by relatives from Kitchener as is the custom each year on her anniversary.

Mrs. Sheard who is the oldest resident of the village and surrounding community, was born Oct. 21, 1849 on the old Sararas homestead, one mile east of the village which had been settled by her father, Andrew Sararas. The farm is now owned by Alfred Sararus, Mrs. Sheard is probably the only living person who can recall the village in its very early days. She vividly remembers the opening of the New Dundee "Lane", the road which adjoins the dam and is the connecting link between Main and Bridge Streets.

Her girlhood years were lived during the time people did most of their travelling on foot and walking to Kitchener or Haysville was considered to be all in a day's work. Her father purchased his first buggy when she was 17 years of age. Prior to that time, Mrs. Sheard made several trips with her parents in an open wagon to visit relatives in Hay Township, a distance of 60 miles which was travelled in one day.

Much of Mrs. Sheard's life was devoted to nursing and as a girl of 12 years she looked after her first patient. She was also noted for being an expert spinner When 20 years of age she married Arthur Sheard and they settled on the old Sheard farm in this community now owned by Herbert Becker.

Her husband passed away more than 60 years ago. Mrs. Sheard had four children, two of whom are still living, Mrs. Conrad Johannes of Saskatoon, Sask., and Titus Sheard of this village. A daughter, Mrs. John Lint died in 1927 and a son Alvin passed away a few years ago. She also has 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Honor Mrs. Sheard on Her 96th Birthday.

New Dundee's oldest resident, Mrs. Hannah Sheard, observed her 96th birthday on Sunday and in spite of the fact that she has been bedfast for more than four years still retains her cheerfulness for which she has always been known. Mrs. Sheard looks forward with keen pleasure to the visits with her friends and neighbors which are the highlights of each day to her since she is no longer able to be up and around. Possessing an active energetic disposition, Mrs. Sheard still loves to recall her early life when as a child she walked to the neighboring village of Haysville and to the town of Berlin, now Kitchener, in the days when most of the travelling was done on foot. Much of Mrs. Sheard's life was devoted to practical nursing and she vividly remembers waiting on her first patient as a girl of 12 years.

At the age of 20, she was married to Arthur Sheard and they took up residence on the old Sheard farm northeast of the village which iis now owned by Herbert Becker. A widow for more than 50 years Mrs. Sheard has lived much of the time in her present home on Bridge St. She had four children, only two of whom are still living namely Mrs. Conrad Johannes of Saskatoon, Sask. and Titus Sheard who resides with his mother in the vilage. Mrs. Sheard also has 13 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. It is interesting to note that the well-known concert pianist, Thelma Johannes of Saskatoon, who often broadcasts over a CBC network is a granddaughter of Mrs. Sheard. A large number of friends and relatives called to extend congratulations to Mrs. Sheard on Sunday. During the day she was the recipient of numerous lovely cards.

MRS. LEAH KLINE (By Record Correspondent) - HAYSVILLE, March 20, Mrs. Leah Kline, 83, relect of William Kline, died at the home of her son, William, Wilmot Township, yesterday afternoon. She suffered a stroke last November, but had recovered sufficiently so as to be around. Two weeks ago she was stricken with pneumonia, and yesterday afternoon succumbed to a heart attack. Mrs. Kline was born on November 18, 1851(61)? New Dundee. After her marriage she moved to a farm near Dunnville, Haldimand county, and 21 years ago came to her present farm. Her husband, William Kline, died in 1925. She is survived by one son, two daughters and seven grandchildren. The children are Addison Kline, with whom she resided, Mrs. William Koch, Waterloo, and Mrs. Reuben Koch, Wellesley. There is one sister, who resides at New Dundee. The funeral will be held from the home at 1: 30 o'clock Friday afternoon to the New Hamburg Evangelical church for services with interment in Riverside Cemetery.

Mrs. Edward Wilhelm - by Record Correspondent - NEW HAMBURG - Mrs. Edward Wilhelm, 74, died Sunday at the home of her son, Alvin, RR 1, Shakespeare. Daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Sararas, she was the former Lucinda Sararas and was born in Zurich. She had lived in Baden, New Hamburg and Stratford and for the past five years had made her home with her son. Her husband predeceased her in 1957. She had been a member of New Hamburg Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons, Alvin and Delton of Shakespeare; a daughter, Mrs. Norman (Diana) Weber, Baden, a brother, Manuel, Zurich, and a sister, Mrs. Harry (Adeline) Taylor, of Hay Township. She was predeceased by a son. The body is at the Futher Omand Funeral Home, New Hamburg, where the funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. by Rev. F. Paul Erb. Temporary entombment will be in the Graff memorial chapel in Riverside cemetery.

NEW DUNDEE - Irvin Sararas, 77, died last night at his home, RR 1, New Dundee, after a lengthy illness. Born Jan. 12, 1876, at New Dundee, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Sararas. A member of St. James's Lutheran Church, New Dundee, he was also a member of the church council. He farmed in the New Dundee district for many years. Surviving are one son, Ivan of New Dundee, two daughters, Mrs. Albert (Rozella) Duench and Mrs. Morgan (Florence) Hallman of New Dundee, also one brother, Alfred of New Dundee. Four grandchildren also survive. His wife, the former Annie Madter predeceased him on Feb. 27, 1948. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, Kitchener, until 11 a.m. Friday when removal will be made to St. James's Lutheran Church, New Dundee, for the funeral at 2:30 p.m. burial will take place in Union Cemetery, New Dundee. ALVIN SHEARD

New Dundee. May 9 - Alvin Sheard, well-known resident of New Dundee, died in Galt Hospital Sunday, following a stroke Saturday night. He had been in his usual good health. Mr. Sheard was born in Wilmot Township, son of Mrs. Hannah Sheard and the late Arthur Sheard. Surviving are one daughter, Miss Gertrude Sheard of Tormto; his mother, Mrs. Hannah Sheard, aged 94, one brother, Titus, of Kitchener and one sinter, Mrs. Lissetta Johannes, of Saskatoon, Sask. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 2.30 at the Baptist Church, with Rev. H. F. Schade in charge. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery. The remains are resting at the Poth Funeral Home, until 10 a m., Wednesday when removal will be made to the church.

We are saddened to announce the passing of Audrey Bergey (nee Kline) on Saturday, April 24, 2021, at Columbia Forest Long Term Care Home, Waterloo, in her 95th year. Daughter of Addison and Miriam (Wettlaufer) Kline. Beloved wife of the late William Bergey (2008) and mother of Susan Bergey (Robyn Landers) and Liz Bergey (Wayne De Jong). Sister to Robert Kline (Jean). Grandma to Julian Landers and Aiden De Jong, and aunt to Bonnie Aultman (Peter), Kim Otterbein (Bevin) and Wendy Prince (Brad Douglas). She is remembered by many grand-nieces and nephews and her much-loved extended family.

Audrey was a long-time member of Zion United Church, New Hamburg, and enjoyed her St. James'-Rosemount United Church family upon moving to Kitchener from the farm in New Hamburg. Audrey and Bill were later members of First United Church in Waterloo.

Audrey touched the lives of all she met, from her teaching days in New Dundee and Galt to hosting exchange students on the farm, teaching English as a Second Language to Hmong newcomers, and even teaching English to a fellow resident at Luther Village on the Park.

Our thanks to the dedicated staff at Parkwood Seniors Community, The Sunshine Centre at Luther Village on the Park, and at Columbia Forest Long Term Care, for their love and support to Audrey over the past years. Staff at Columbia Forest became her family when the pandemic prevented her own family from seeing her for months at a time.

In honour of Audrey's memory, donations may be made to The Alzheimer's Society, the Waterloo Chapter of the CNIB, or First United Church Waterloo.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held when we can all really, really be together to celebrate the life of this independent lady!

Wilson resided in St. Agatha and had formerly farmed for 25 years in Wilmot Township and for 25 years worked security for Barber Collins. He was born 83 years ago in Wilmot Township and was the son of the late Reuben and Beatrice (Kline) Koch. Beloved husband of Doris (Myers) Koch whom he married June 24, 1950. Loving father of Leonard and wife Anne Koch, Murray and wife Sylvia Koch all of Baden, Glenn Koch of Washington, Bradley and wife Kathi Koch of Cambridge.
