Sudden Death of Edward Seybold Occurs Today - Stricken With Heart Disease While Taking Exercise in Front of His Home - He Was One of Ottawa's Most Prominent Citizens

Edward Seybold, one of Ottawa's foremost citizens and a man who was prominently connected with the early industrial life of the Capital, dropped dead in front of his residence, 53 Cartier Street, shortly after 9: 30 o'clock this morning. He was apparently in the usual good health he was known to enjoy very shortly before his death, and at the time was taking a little morning exercise spreading snow over the ice on the walk leading to the front door of his residence. Death is attributed to a sudden attack of heart disease.

He was seen to fall back into the soft snow by the side of the walk by Mr. Neville and Mr. Hogan, who were close by and were about to go to their places of business at the time. Thinking that the deceased had just fallen on the ice, they hurried to his assistance, but he was dead when they reached his side. Medical aid was immediately summoned, but it was of no avail.

The late Mr. Seybold was born in Montreal 69 years ago, the son of the late C. Seybold of that city. He came to Ottawa in 1874, and during his early life here was senior member of the firm of Seybold and Gibson, wholesale dry goods merchants. The firm built the Central Chambers, which were sold a few years ago to the Laurentian Realty Company. Mr. Seybold, although he took no part in the public life of the city, was identified with many big industrial undertakings in Ottawa and other parts of the country, and was at one time managing director of the Right-of-Way mines, in Cobalt.

He was a well-known member of the Laurentian Club and the Royal Ottawa Golf Club. He was also closely identified with the early life of the Dominion Methodist Church, and was on the first Board of Trustees of that church. He remained on the Board of Trustees for 18 years. During the last few years, Mr. Seybold had an office in the Laurentian Club and was a broker.

The late Mr. Seybold leaves no children. At the time the Empress of Ireland was sunk, he and his first wife were passengers. His wife was lost. Three years ago he married a second time. His second wife was formerly Miss Maud Musgrove, daughter of J.A. Musgrove, druggist. She still survives.

Mr. J.A. Seybold, 232 Metcalfe Street, is a brother of the deceased, and Mrs. W.S. Odell, is a sister. With the exception of his widow, they are the only immediate relatives surviving. It is not known yet what funeral arrangements will be made. Coroner Craig was notified, but as it is obvious that death was due to natural causes, there will be no inquest.
