B.E. BECHTEL PASSES AWAY AT WATERLOO

Prominent and Widely Knows Citizen Died Suddenly

    INSURANCE INSPECTOR AND MANUFACTURER

The sudden passing shortly after one o'clock on Tuesday morning of Mr. Byron E. Bechtel, Inspector of the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Company and for years one of the best known brick manufacturers of the province, came as a distinct shock to his family and friends. As he was about to retire on Monday evening after a busy day he was seized with a heart attack to which he succumbed shortly after one o'clock in the morning. His death removes a leading and highly regarded citizen of the town of Waterloo where he had resided for a period of over fifty years.

Born in Blair, Sept. 30th, 1859, the son of Isaac and Jane Bechtel, he resided there with his parents until about 10 years of age when the family removed to Bridgeport. Following two years' residence in that village they moved to Waterloo where he had since resided. He received his education in the public school at Waterloo and at the K-W. High School, and after securing his teaching certificate he taught school in Haysville and Williamsburg for two years. He then became a member of the staff of the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Company. A few years later he severed his connection with the company to enter into partnership with the late Mr. Buckberrough, forming the insurance agency of Buckberrough and Bechtel. In the year 1903, after fifteen years in agency work, the firm sold out to Mr. C. A. Boehm. Mr. Bechtel, who had been brought up a brick- maker, his father, the late Isaac Bechtel, having operated a brickyard for years, then became active in the business of brick manufacturing and also for a time carried on the manufacture of brick-making machinery, taking charge of the plant in 1892. He was of an inventive turn of mind and held valuable patents to brick-making machinery designed by him, which have been installed in brickyards in both Canada and the United States.

In 1915 he was appointed inspector of the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Company, a position he held until his death. He also continued to operate the brickyard north of Waterloo which he owned for many years.

The late Mr. Bechtel was recognized as one of the best informed brick men in the Dominion and in earlier years was active in the Canadian National Clay Products Association of Canada of which he enjoyed the distinction of being the first president.

He was also active in municipal circles for about ten years during which he was a valued member of the town council.

The late Mr. Bechtel was an Odd fellow, having been a member for many years of the local lodge.

His wife, Anna Margaret Taylor, daughter of the late C. M. Taylor, survives, together with a family of seven children, viz: Charles, of Edmonton, Alta.; Wilhelmina, Toronto; Myrtle (Mrs. C. S. Bean) of near Preston; Edith (Mrs. Howard Reed) Waterloo; Margie (Mrs. Glen Eby) Tara; Jane (Mrs. Hugh Van Every) Waterloo; and Ruth, (Mrs. Sanford Whiting), of Waterloo. He also leaves five sisters and one brother, viz: Mrs. A. C. Biggs, Burlington; Mrs. William McBain, Mountain View, Cal.; Eloine, Waterloo; Mrs. R. O. Dobbin, Waterloo; Mrs. Carrie R. Ratz, Toronto, and W. B. Bechtel, Kitchener. Three sisters and one brother predeceased him, viz: Mrs. Homer Watson, Doon; Mrs. Emily Martin, Waterloo; Ella May, Water- loo, and Milton, Elmira.
The funeral will take place from his late residence, 59 Allen St., Waterloo, on Thursday at two o'clock p.m., to the Blair cemetery for Interment.

    MILTON T. BECHTEL

The farmers and others having the care of cattle and horses in this section are fortunate in being so near a practical and experienced veterinary surgeon when his services are urgently required. Mr. Bechtel is a graduate of the Ontario Veterinary College, from which he graduated with honors in March, 1889. He is also an honorary member of the Ontario Veterinary Medical Society. Being an unusually observings student of the diseases to which the brute creation is subject he is generally fitted to prescribe the proper remedies. He has acquired a wide practice since he opened his office here about three years ago, and has had more than average success in dealing with obstinate cases. He has made dehorning a specialty and has already proved himself an expert in that line.

Mr. Bechtel was born at Blair in 1865, and outside of that which he acquired in college studying for his profession, received most of his education in Waterloo. He is a son of the late Isaac Bechtel, who for many years was a prominent citizen of Blair and latterly of Waterloo. The subject of this sketch was recently married.

    Notes:

Writer, mentor, wife, great-grandmother. Born on Jan. 17, 1925, in Markham, Ont.; died on July 20, 2015, in Toronto, of complications from Alzheimer's disease, aged 90.

Emily loved to write, starting as a teenage poet and eventually becoming an acclaimed author. She wrote children's books such as Franny and the Music Girl and Hattie Pearl Click Click, as well as scripts for radio and television (including 144 episodes of Polka Dot Door), and, with Mark Thurman, created the Mighty Mites comic strip for Owl Magazine. She spread her passion to others, coaching teachers on how to use creative writing and music in their classrooms.

Emily Hearn was a lively 16-year-old poet from Kitchener, Ont., when she began studies in English Literature at Trinity College, University of Toronto and immediately formed friendships, many of which proved to be lifelong.

Through two marriages, she was always writing as her daughter and three sons grew up. When money was scarce, her skills kept the household going with temporary work she could do from home. She could type faster than the wind and, for a while, put addresses on envelopes '96 at a penny a piece, while her kids played "fight like cowboys" and jumped on the couch and slid down the stairs.

By the early 1960s, she was teaching nursery school in Toronto, first at Howard Park United Church and then at what is now the Jewish Community Centre. This was the beginning of her many years of engaging with young children. Later she worked with children with disabilities, alongside Fran Herman, a pioneer of music therapy in Canada.

In 1967 she married Doug Valleau, her third husband '96 a union of poets that would last 43 years until his death in 2010. Doug's four daughters from a previous marriage and Emily's youngest son (her three eldest had left home by then) were part of what illustrator Mark Thurman describes as "a very creative environment." He recalls, "We often got stuck on part of a story. Emily would jump up, sit at the piano, play Bach or Mozart, and then suddenly stop. 'I've got it!' she'd yell. Then off we'd go again '96 her talking, me drawing."

As the years passed and the kids left home, Emily and Doug travelled frequently. But her writing and mentorship flourished. In 1990, she established Write With You, the elementary-school program of Writers in Electronic Residence, and for 20 years mentored children by e-mail.

The lively family gatherings were a jolly mix of exes and steps and ex-steps, with grandchildren eventually spanning in age through 42 years. When a child would ask how two "aunts" were related, the adults would exchange bewildered glances and give up, saying "We're all just family." Emily's vibrant enthusiasm drew everyone together. Her days were so busy and active that one of her granddaughters called her Secca: Whenever she phoned, Emily would say "Just a sec!" before returning to talk.

In her later years, she lived in a condominium tower with three elevators, each facing a different direction. Visitors could become disoriented when trying to determine which corridor to follow. One young granddaughter recalled how, at that moment, you would see Emily standing outside her door waving, a look of absolute delight on her face. This reflects the essence of Emily: helping you to find your way while making you feel like the most special person in the world.

Sue Carduelis is Emily's daughter; Allan Wadley is her nephew.
