SHANTZ - Joseph Y. Shantz, son of Jacob and Mary (Yost) Shantz, was born July 10, 1815, in Waterloo Co., Ont. He was married to Elizabeth Stauffer on the 15th of May, 1838. To them were born twelve children, of whom four sons and five daughters survive, all living in Wilmot Twp., near the paternal home. Bro. Shantz passed away on the 8th of May at the ripe old age of 84 ys., 9 ms., and 28 ds. A large circle of relatives and friends followed the remains to their last resting place at Geiger's M. H. on the 11th. Deceased united with the Mennonite Church in his youth and was a consistent member until death. Funeral services were held by E.S. Hallman from Psa. 39: 4, and Amos Cressman from Rev. 14: 13. Sister Shantz preceded her husband several years ago. May the Lord comfort the family and friends.

Under the hospitable roof of this pioneer citizen I spent a few pleasant hours. He is one of the specimens of noble manhood, through whose instrumentality vast sections of the wilds of Western Canada have been made to blossom as the rose. He was born July 10th, 1815. His wife, nee Elizabeth Stauffer, was born near Doon, in Waterloo township, January 10th, 1820. They were married on May 15th, 1838, and now live a quiet and retired life on the old homestead, which through years of hard toil and privations they accumulated that in after years they and their offspring might enjoy. That they have faithfully responded to the Divine injunction to replenish and multiply the earth, is proved by the fact that they are the parents of twelve children, seven sons and five daughters, and have fifty grand children to their credit. They have lived here for about sixty years Besides securing sufficient of this world's goods to enable them to live in ease and comfort during their declining years, their nine children now living have been amply provided for, their sons all having good farms and in well- to-do circumstances. The old saw-mill, some distance below the old homestead, was built about fifty years ago. In this pioneer industry Mr. Shantz expended countless drops of perspiration, and when sawing logs not entirely beyond his strength to handle he would operate it single-handed and alone. At that time there was a large amount of custom sawing and he did not waste time in taking advantage of it. Mr. Shantz was evidently a young man of extraordinary physical endurance and of strong mental capacity, for now in the eighty-third year of his age we find him still vigorous in mind and not what may be called infirm physically. Mrs. Shantz is yet hail and hearty in the seventy-eighth year of her age. They are both devout adherents of the Mennonite faith.

After Mr. Shantz's first marriage he took possession of his father's farm, still known as 'Jacob Shantz's place', where he resided for upwards of some forty years, then he moved to Berlin where he is now residing. Shantz, Jacob Yost (1822-1909)

Jacob Yost Shantz (22 May 1822-28 October 1909), of Berlin (now Kitchener), ON, for many years a promoter of the Mennonite settlements in Manitoba, was the eighth child of Jacob and Maria Yost Schantz, of Montgomery County, PA, who had purchased a farm in what is now Kitchener. The son's interests soon extended beyond his vocation of farming. Fruit growing, maple sugar production, and the operation of a sawmill were added to his activities. Later he entered the building and contracting business. He promoted various industries in his city, the chief being the Dominion Button Works. Shantz was easily the wealthiest Mennonite entrepreneur in Ontario in the early 1880s, with more than 300 people on the payroll of his Dominion Button Works alone. Over expansion and possible mismanagement in a declining market led to virtual bankruptcy by 1886. Shantz spent the rest of his life paying his debts , and died a man of moderate means.

For 27 years Shantz served on the Berlin school board. In 1882 he was elected mayor of Berlin (Kitchener) in an uncontested election. Inexplicably he resigned four days after taking office, though the town council briefly considered not accepting the resignation. The fact that J. Y. Shantz's son, Moses, was also elected as a member of the council may have generated pressure for one of the family to resign. Shantz's letter of resignation has not survived.

Shantz's chief public contribution, however, lay in the promotion of Mennonite immigration to Manitoba. In 1872 as a representative of the Canadian government Shantz accompanied Bernhard Warkentin, who represented the prospective Mennonite immigrants from Russia, on a land inspection trip to Manitoba. The Canadian Department of Agriculture published Shantz's report under the title The narrative of a journey to Manitoba, which became a history-making pamphlet going through various editions with a total circulation of several hundred thousand. During the next 35 years, Shantz made many trips to Manitoba, the twenty-seventh and the last in his 85th year. His work consisted in assisting the Mennonite immigrants who wished to settle in Manitoba with transportation and supplies, as well as helping them settle on the land. By November 1874 it was reported that 1,400 Mennonites had been placed in Manitoba and five years later the number had grown to over 7,000. Shantz not only obtained most favorable travel rates for the immigrants but often used money from his $100,000 personal credit fund in a Berlin bank to assist his friends from Russia by helping pay their transportation costs, equipment, and farm machinery. Shantz was also placed in charge of the $100,000 Canadian government loan to the Russian Mennonites, guaranteed by the Ontario Mennonites. As treasurer of the "Aid Committee of Ontario" Shantz also dispensed the funds loaned to the immigrants by his fellow Mennonites. He lived to see the day when all of these loans were repaid, the final settlement having been made in his 85th year. In 1893 Shantz began promoting Alberta land and here again future developments proved his business judgment and vision.

Shantz became a member of the Mennonite Church (MC) at an early age. In 1875, desiring a more progressive church, Shantz became a member of the group later to be known as the Mennonite Brethren in Christ. For eighteen years he served on the Managing Committee of the Gospel banner and for at least 8 years on his denomination's Foreign and Heathen Missionary Society. He was always deeply interested in the temperance movement and a defender of Biblical nonresistance.

In 1898 Shantz joined the local Christian Science congregation, and remained a member in good standing until his death, although evidence is inconclusive on the question of whether he remained actively involved to the time of his death in 1909. He was still an active member, serving on the congregation's board of directors, at age 81 (1903). Four factors help to explain Shantz's interest in the then-new Christian Science movement. (1) Shantz had a life-long interest in the innovative, whether in business, land settlement, or religious thought, though he always believed himself to be orthodox. (2) The emphasis in Christian Science on a rigorous, healthful life-style was appealing. Shantz was active in the temperance movement, and was a vegetarian at least part of his life. (3) Jacob Y. Shantz was a "healer" with a reputation for curing cancer. Although his approach differed from that of Christian Science, enough common interest existed to prove attractive. (4) Shantz probably felt rejected by the Mennonite Brethren in Christ (United Missionary) denomination as he was phased out of all leadership roles by 1896.

Although Shantz was a quiet and unassuming man, his voice had a deep, organ-like tone that people did not forget. He was married three times, in 1843 to Barbara Biehn, in 1853 to Nancy Brubacher, and in 1871 to Sarah Shark. Two sons and three daughters were born of the first marriage, and three sons and four daughters to the second. Shantz was buried in the First Mennonite Cemetery in Kitchener.

SHANTZ, JACOB YOST, farmer, businessman, office holder, author, and promoter of Mennonite settlement; b. 2 May 1822 in Ebytown (Kitchener), Upper Canada, eighth of the ten children of Jacob Shantz, a farmer and sawmill owner, and Mary Yost; m. first 2 May 1843 Barbara Biehn (d. 1853), and they had three daughters and two sons; m. secondly 6 Dec. 1853 Nancy Anna Brubacher (d. 1870), and they had seven children; m. thirdly 1 Oct. 1871 Sarah Shuh (d. 1893); d. 28 Oct. 1909 in Berlin (Kitchener).

Jacob Yost Shantz grew up in Ebytown, later known as Berlin, where his parents, Mennonites from Pennsylvania, had purchased land in 1810 [see Benjamin Eby*]. On his 21st birthday he married his cousin Barbara Biehn and not long afterwards they took over his parents' farm. Shantz then became manager of his father's sawmill, began to buy and sell real estate, and invested in other local business ventures. His interests extended to education and public service: he acted as a school trustee and held several minor local posts, such as fence inspector, road overseer, and village tax collector. He was also an early supporter of the temperance movement.

Shantz soon diversified his business interests. He found a variety of markets for the wood from his sawmill and the woodlots he acquired in the early 1850s, constructing wooden sidewalks in Berlin, providing fuel for the Grand Trunk Railway, and supplying building materials to German immigrants. He took a major step as an entrepreneur in 1861 when he bought a property on the corner of King and Foundry (Ontario) streets, Berlin, and constructed the Canadian Block, a three-storey commercial building. As a contractor, he became involved in numerous projects, one of the most important of which was the erection of the Berlin market-house in 1869. Early the following year he built a button factory for Emil Vogelsang and his partner, John Jacob Woelfle. Seven months later Woelfle sold his interests in the factory to Shantz, who quickly gained prominence as a manufacturer. In 1875 the partnership between Vogelsang and Shantz was terminated. The Dominion Button Works became Shantz's; his sons would assist him in managing the company, which by 1880 employed over 140 workers. Early in 1873 Shantz had also formed a partnership to manufacture felt. Shantz and Feick lasted only two years, but Shantz went on to form other partnerships for his felt business and continued in it until about 1880.

In 1872 Shantz had been asked by the Canadian government to travel to western Canada with a Mennonite from southern Russia, Bernhard Warkentin, who was considering immigration to North America. The government mistakenly thought that Warkentin was a member of an official delegation; it is not entirely clear why Shantz was selected to accompany him. After visiting Manitoba with him Shantz sent a report of his journey to the government. Favourably impressed, immigration officials asked that he prepare a more detailed account for publication. Narrative of a journey to Manitoba was translated into a number of languages and became an important item in the promotion of European immigration to the west. Meanwhile, the federal government had assigned Wilhelm Hespeler* to visit Mennonite colonies in Russia to see if further contacts might encourage prospective immigrants to choose Canada rather than the United States. In the spring of 1873 six Mennonite colonies sent two delegates each to investigate opportunities in North America. Shantz was invited to accompany Hespeler and the group to Manitoba, and he took them through the regions southeast and west of Winnipeg.

When many Mennonites decided to immigrate [see Gerhard Wiebe*], Shantz was asked to serve as Canadian director of the movement, to assist with transportation and other arrangements, and to see that the immigrants arrived safely at their destination. He needed to raise a considerable amount of money to help defray the expenses of the approximately 7,000 settlers who were to arrive in Manitoba during the next six years. Many were unable to sell their property in Russia or lacked the means to pay for their transportation and purchase necessary supplies. Shantz served as secretary-treasurer of a committee organized in 1874 to receive and administer funds lent by Mennonites living in Ontario. The following year the committee successfully requested from the federal government a loan of $100,000 and a subsidy of $70,000 for transportation. Shantz and other Ontario Mennonites acted as guarantors for these and additional loans. Over the years Shantz would travel frequently between Ontario and Manitoba, to provide assistance to the immigrants, arrange repayment of the loans, and, when needed, obtain more funds. In return for his services he received a number of land grants in the "reserves" which had been set aside for the Mennonites to the east and west of the Red River. Two communities, Schanzenfeld and Schanzenberg, were named in his honour.

While Shantz was engaged in immigration activities, the Dominion Button Works had continued to expand. In 1884 it employed 300 workers at Berlin and by 1886 it opened a branch plant in Buffalo, N.Y. Shantz nevertheless experienced severe financial difficulties in the mid 1880s and was forced to sell numerous properties in order to clear his debts and those of Jacob Y. Shantz and Sons, which operated the works. In June 1891 the company was reorganized and Shantz retired from the business.

Shantz saw another opportunity, however, again in western Canada. In July 1892 he announced his intention to start a colony there. He located suitable land at a site called Didsbury (Alta), about 50 miles north of Calgary. The following summer he canvassed Mennonites in Ontario and the United States and succeeded in persuading 44 families to take up homesteads in the northwest. A major exodus from the region of Berlin took place in the spring of 1894. Among the group which left were two of Shantz's children and their families. Shantz would journey west to visit his children in the Didsbury area until he was 85. He is said to have made a total of 27 trips from Ontario to the west in connection with his interests there.

Shantz had long been a active member of the Mennonite church in Berlin. In 1875 he joined a reform group called the United Mennonites, later known as the Mennonite Brethren in Christ. Shantz moved again in 1898, this time to the Church of Christ, Scientist. He remained active in the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Berlin for several years until poor health restricted his movements.

Jacob Yost Shantz died in 1909, preceded by three of his twelve children, his three wives, and all his brothers and sisters. He is remembered for his considerable business expertise and the enormous energies he invested in the various enterprises he had fostered, above all in the immigration of thousands of Mennonites to western Canada. In addition to a modest estate, he left a spiritual heritage, that of a religious man, wanting first and foremost to serve God and his fellow man. In the estimation of many who knew him, he had done both well.

Mr. John Frederick Augustus Sykes Fayette, a well educated mulatto, built a schoolhouse on his own account in rear of where the Royal Exchange hotel now stands, in 1840. He called it the "Wellington Institute," and opened it in December, charging the usual rates, but being poorly patronized he ran into debt and left a year or two afterwards quite suddenly, greatly to the chagrin of his creditors. His was the first school in Berlin in which any attempt had been made to teach grammar and also the first in which the pupils saw a geographical map. Jacob Y. Shantz, then 18 years of age, and the late Israel D. Bowman, a lad of 11, attended this school.

J. Y. Shantz & Co's Factory

This enterprising firm have started operation in their new factory. It can well be said that for a fine factory, it may be classed with the finest in Canada. All the modern improvements which are necessary to save time and money have been procured. The factory has its own electric light plant, and steam heating: fine wash basins and closets and everything convenient for both employer and employee. The firm might also be complimented on the manner in which they are fixing up the grounds, and also the street in front of the factory. The grounds have been neatly laid out with drives and nice green lawn. A few nice flower beds may be looked for next spring. The deep gutters have also been filled up, and sewer pipes now carry off the water, instead of standing in the gutter until it has time to dry up. If Berlin had more of these kind of people that would take an interest in their property how much more beautiful our town would be.

The Button Industry

A young German named Emil Vogelsang came to Berlin in 1867 and chummed with Allan Huber, son of H. S. Huber. One day the merchant questioned the youth,

"What can you do, Emil?"
"I'm a button turner."
"Then show us how you make buttons."
"Before I could do that," said Emil, "I'd need a lathe and a batch of ivory-nuts."

Mr. Huber had a lathe made in Waterloo and imported a shipment of nuts for Mr. Vogelsang. The latter leased a room and power from the Simpson Furniture Company and soon was manufacturing first-class buttons. He called his venture, "The Pioneer Button Works." The buttons found a ready sale in Eastern Canada and the United States. His was the first button factory in Canada, if not in America..

Before long Mr. Vogelsang needed a factory of his own. He interested J. J. Woelfle in the enterprise and they awarded Jacob Y. Shantz a contract to erect a $20,000 building on the northeast corner of King and College Streets. Before it was up Mr. Woelfle withdrew. Mr. Shantz then purchased an interest in the button works for a sum equal to the price of the building and entered into a 7-year agreement with Mr. Vogelsang. When that term expired Mr. Vogelsang retired and built another button factory in South Queen Street, which he later sold to the W. G. & R. Shirt Company. (Now occupied by the Fehrenbach Mattress Co.)

Mr. Shantz had not had any practical experience in the manufacture of buttons, yet did not wish to see the employees deprived of their livelihood. He therefore continued manufacturing and after costly experimenting, during which he was assisted by his son, M. B. Shantz, the factory was placed on a sound footing. Mr. Shantz's sons Dilman and John likewise joined him. Jacob Y. Shantz & Sons became the largest employers of labor in Berlin. For a time there were four button factories in the town and it was widely known as "Buttonville." Jacob Y. Shantz entered into partnership also with a Mr. Feick and made felt goods in the button-factory basement.

The saw mill was first operated by Mr. Shantz's father. It formed a natural introduction to Mr. Shantz's activity as a builder and contractor. He was the builder and owner of the Canadian Block at the corner at King and Ontario (Foundry) streets. Mr. Shantz built also the four room addition to the Suddaby School, which is the only part of the old school now remaining. He was one of the earliest of the extensive builders of private residences in the town. He entered the industrial field through the solicitation of those needing money to float infant industries. His first venture in this way was the wind-mill for grinding flour, chopping grain, etc., that stood formerly on Mecklenburg Hill. Its exact site was a little south of Church street and about midway between Cedar and Albert streets. This historic and quaint feature in the landscape of the South ward was a losing business venture to the extent of several thousand dollars. For years after operation ceased the deserted mill with its great wings appeared above the surrounding trees on the hillside. It was removed somewhere about 1870 or a little later.

THE WINDMILL

A feature of many years of the southerly end of the village was a windmill, on what was known as Mecklenburg Hill, near the westerly corner of Church and Albert streets. This was the project of a company composed of Jacob Y. Shantz, Henry Boehmer and others. It was built in 1860 by Frederick Rickerman who was the originator of the idea. Rickerman was familiar with windmills and had operated one in Germany. The structure was about sixty feet high, hexagonal in plan, with each of the four wings or sails about 45 feet long by 6 feet wide. A vertical centre beam meshing with the topcross shaft extended down to the main floor of the mill and there operated three sets of stones. The revolving top carried the cross-shaft, on which the wings were mounted, and could be set for the Wind by means of a Windlass. An outer platform was at the height of' the wing length from the top shaft. From this the wings or arms could be worked on, and their canvas covering put in place. Particular excellence was claimed for the flour from this mill. The author remembers eating bread baked from the first flour it produced.

King Street, Kitchener

Cameron Street eastward.-A fine large holding extending along King Street to almost opposite the Mennonite Church, was Sheriff Davidson's place, Forest Hill, with square Colonial brick house, still standing, although materially changed, on a commanding hill.

Benjamin Eby's farm, occupied and owned later by his son, Elias Eby. J. Y. Shantz's farm, originally the Eby farm, with a large dam and saw mill. The pond was westerly of the present Doon Twines factory, was of good size, was fed by two creeks and gave water power for Shantz's saw mill for many years. There was no steam power. The ice supply for Berlin was largely taken from this pond in the earlier years.

King Street , North Side

From Francis to Water Street.

he ground was used by H. F. J. Jackson for stabling, etc., on his contract for building the Grand Trunk Railway through a large part of Waterloo County. Later he built his residence on this plot.

The plot east of Water Street was used as a drill ground by the Berlin Volunteer Company of the Waterloo Battalion, 1864-67. They mostly drilled in the evenings and had some quite young volunteers, Jacob Stroh, 16 years, one of them. The trustees of the New Jerusalem Church bought the corner in 1869 and in 1870 erected the present Church. This had the first pipe organ in Berlin, built by Claus Maas of Preston.

Haller's hat and felt-working shop. He made the first felt boots and shoes, worn largely by the farmers, in winter, in this vicinity.

Open space up to Henry Brickner's house.

A frame building one and one-half story high and located a little back of the street. Later a brick building was erected on the open space. At the westerly corner of Young Street Mr. Bricker built a cooperage in 1860.

At the easterly corner of Young and King Streets was Wendell Brunner's blacksmith shop, a rough frame building. Behind it, on Young Street, was another frame building used as a waggon shop by Christian Huinbrecht.

Vacant place and next a three story brick building, lengthwise with King Street, divided into two parts, used as stores for a short time. Later it was a paint shop and still later a warehouse for the Simpson factory across the road. The third floor of this building was the first habitat of the Berlin Militia, organized in 1864 at the time of the American Civil War. Colonel Pickering was the first drill master. He was sent from England to drill the Canadian Militia. The local company had at first no rifles and had to use Wooden substitutes for their drills.

A three story brick building erected by C. Schneucker and used as a hotel. The third floor was a large hall used for a number of years, for balls and concerts. Paul Schmidt moved into the building in 1860. It was then called the Schneucker and Schmidt Hotel. A later landlord was Mr. Zinger and the name was changed to The North American Hotel. Toward the rear and just east of the Hotel was a barn and horse shed, with wide approach from King Street.

A one and one-half story frame house 15 or 20 feet back from the street line with gable and veranda facing King Street, occupied by Paul Schmidt and later by his widow.

A very early building one and one-half story, rough cast; the dwelling of Sam Trout, a blacksmith. A later occupant was James Godbold, son of Godbold who lived on the corner of Wellington and King Streets. Jacob, son of James, brakeman on the Grand Trunk, was killed while on top of a freight car in St. Mary's, the train passing under a low bridge which Godbold did not see as he was looking at a circus beside the track.

A tailor shop was also in this building which stood originally at the corner of Foundry and King Streets.

A two story brick building with gable toward King Street and occupied by Henry Gauntley. On the second floor there was a paint shop and at the rear a wagon shop.

At the Foundry St. corner a frame building, Reinhold Lang's tannery with his house, alongside, one and one-half story with frame porch. Later Mr. Lang moved his business to Charles Street, the site of the present Lang Tanning Co. plant. Jacob Y. Shantz erected the Canadian Block, three story brick, corner of King and Foundry Streets, in 1856. The front was set back from the street line and had a verandah extending to the edge of the sidewalk. There were three stores, the corner, Cole and Graf, druggists; then Wm. Young, groceries and liquors; and next H. S. Huber, general store. The old blacksmith shop was used as a warehouse by Huber.

The Canadian Block while still fairly new, burned down about 1862 in the Spring. The fire started in the corner drug store, during the night. The walls remained standing after the fire was out but were considered dangerous and were pulled down by the firemen. One wall, in this operation, fell on H. S. Huber's warehouse, which had not been burned and in which he had large quantities of supplies. The firemen were blamed for not having notified Huber so that he could have removed his goods before the wall was thrown over.

King Street Kitchener South Side

Water to Gaukel Street.-At the Water Street corner stood, before 1867, a large frame building used mainly during the winter months as a drill shed for the local militia. The building was at one time used as a skating rink. Later it was moved to Woodside Park on Queen Street South and used for Township Fairs, and other purposes. Next easterly were two houses, one-story high, with gables toward King Street, owned by Rev. F. W. Tuerk and built about 1860. Next an unpainted frame building, used as a shop, stood on the westerly corner of Gaukel Street. At the rear of tills shop there was another frame building, moved there from Factory Street, used as a felt factory by Feick & Co„ the partners being Mr. Haller, Manager, and Mr. Feick. Later, when J. Y. Shantz took over the felt business the building was converted into dwellings and used for some time, when it was torn down. The site is now occupied by the Salvation Army Barracks.

Death of Aged Pioneer
J. Y. Shantz Passes Away

Berlin mourns today the death of Jacob Yost Shantz, its oldest native born citizen and a real Nature's nobleman an honest, God-fearing successful man. The end came peacefully at three o'clock this morning at his home, 105 Queen St. north.

He was as well as usual to within an hour of death. About two o'clock he arose, and dressed himself, thinking it was near daybreak. Soon after retiring again, he called his son, Jacob and complained of internal pain. It grew more severe and his son D. B. Shantz was summoned from his home on Margaret Avenue. Before he reached his father's bedside, the aged gentleman had fallen asleep - in the sleep that knows no earthly awakening. He was conscious to within a few moments of the end. He was - barring partial blindness - in good health for a man so advanced in years - almost 88.

He was frequently seen down town, being driven out by his friends.

His mental faculties were bright, and he would spend hours conversing with his sons and friends, recalling with wonderful accuracy and detail, occurrences of long bygone years. During the past few days he has evinced a keen interest in the progress of the new button factory here. He was the pioneer of the button industry in Canada and it is worthy of note that of the five sons, four are engaged in the button trade as well as four nephews.

The funeral of the late Mr. Shantz will be held on Saturday at 1.30 from the family residence, 105 Queen St. north, to the Lancaster St. Mennonite Church and East End Cemetery.

The late Jacob Yost Shantz was a native of Berlin, having been born on May 2nd, 1822, on the Shantz farm just south of the East End Mennonite Church. His parents were pioneer residents and aided in reclaiming a hitherto wild and undeveloped region for the purposes of civilization. His father operated the first sawmill in this section and was in many ways connected with the material growth and upbuilding of this portion of the province. Being United Empire Loyalists they followed in British flag into Canada.

The maternal grandfather of Mr. Shantz took a very active and helpful part in laying out the early roads of the county and in otherwise advancing those interests which indicated that the seeds of civilization had been planted and that his was to become some day a populous and prosperous district.

Mr. Shantz was reared in Berlin, where he acquired a common school education. His early life was devoted to lumber interests. He engaged in the operation of a sawmill, conducted a lumberyard and became an extensive contractor and builder. He was prominently identified with manufacturing interests in later years, operating a factory for the manufacture of boots and shoes. In 1870 he established the button factory, becoming associated with a German button manufacturer and a few years later he bought out the interests of his partner, continuing to carry on the business in his own name, when he retired to enjoy a well-earned and richly merited rest. He was almost 88 years of age. His life has been one of intense and well-directed activity, in which he made good use of his opportunities, and he belonged too, to that class of representative men who while promoting individual success also advanced the general welfare. His family numbered twelve children, five sons and seven daughters. He has always been deeply interested in the welfare of Berlin, but has been content to do his public service as a private citizen, never seeking or desiring office. He acted, however, as mayor of Berlin a short time when the citizens offered him the position unanimously. He accepted it as an honor and then resigned. Another important labor which Mr. Shantz performed has been in connection with the development and upbuilding of Manitoba and the Northwest. He began operating there in 1874 and on behalf of the Mennonites devoted a large portion of his time in making a general prospector setting forth the advantages of the country, its natural resources and its climate in the districts mentioned in order to accomplish these objectives and gave liberally of his own private fortune, and through his endeavors, secured large sums from other friends of the Mennonite Society for the purpose of forming the colony, and for the development of that country which constitutes the first white settlement in Manitoba and the Northwest. When he first went to Fort Garry - now Winnipeg - in 1874, he saw only three white men in many weeks. In 30 years he went from here west 27 times, the last time when he was 85 years old. He has thus been instrumental in having thousands of the people of this sect becoming colonists in that district and thus settling up the country, aiding in its reclamation from a wild and unimproved district and converting it to the uses of civilization.

In Berlin, he did a great work in assisting the early German settlers when they reached here. He built scores of houses for them, and gave them all the time they desired, to repay it. He was the soul of honor and integrity, and his life was a noble example of the true Christian. He was a faithful member of the Mennonite church and a liberal supporter.

He was twice married. There are five surviving sons and four daughters, Moses B. of Rochester; Dilman B., of Berlin; John , of Buffalo; Ephraim B., of Didsbury; and Jacob, of Berlin; Mrs. Ezra Snider, Berlin; Mrs. N. B. Detweiler, Berlin; Mrs. Andrew Weber, Didsbury; and Miss Ida Shantz, Berlin.

Soon after their marriage they moved on the farm where now is what is known as Shantz Station (Shantz Station was named after Mr. Shantz and was situated near where his farm buildings were located. The station was burnt many years ago but the place still goes by that name), where they resided until the Grand Trunk Railroad was built when he sold his farm to the company and moved to North Dumfries Township, not far from Blair, where he purchased a large farm. SHANTZ - Samuel Y. Shantz, son of Jacob and Mary (Yost) Shantz who moved from Montgomery Co., Pa., to Canada in 1810, was born Jan. 15, 1825. On the 11th of March, 1845, he was married to Esther Erb who survives him. This union was blessed with eight sons and five daughters of whom two daughters have passed away. Bro. Shantz united with the Mennonite Church in his youth and was a faithful member until his death. He was widely known and hightly esteemed, and his liberality and wise counsel were much appreciated. He had been a sufferer for several yeaars and was confined to the house for several months. On the 9th of May he was afflicted with a stroke of paralysis to which he succumbed on the 15th having attained the age of 75 ys. and 4 ms. The funeral was held on the 17th from his late residence two miles south-west of Berlin, where the burial took place. The funeral was largely attended. Services by E.S. Hallman from 2 Cor. 5: 1 and Noah Stauffer from Heb. 11: 10. May God comfort the bereaved family^.

Shantz.--Abraham C. Shantz died at this home in Breslau on April 25, 1922; aged 77 y. 11 m. 17 d. In 1866 he was united in marriage with Catharine Goetz, who survives. There are left to mourn with the wife and mother, 9 children, 32 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren. Brother Schantz united with the Mennonite Church in early life, in which faith he left this world to meet his Maker. He left many evidences that he met his Savior in peace. The funeral services were held on the 27th in charge of Brethren J. S. Woolner and Oscar Burkholder. Text, I Cor. 15: 54.

Shantz. - Isaac C. Shantz was born near Breslau, Ont., on Jan. 20, 1854; died in Breslau on April 24, 1928; aged 74 y. 3 m. 4 d. On Feb. 28, 1875, he was married to Sarah Shantz, who predeceased him Dec. 20, 1921. To this union were born 8 children, 4 of whom (Norman, Viney, Sarah, and Laura) have passed on to the spirit world. There remain to mourn a loving father, one son (Edwin) three daughters (Luanna, Mary, and Edith), and 11 grandchildren. Bro. Shantz united with the Mennonite Church in early manhood and remained faithful to his choice until his departure from this life. The funeral was held on April 27, at the Cressman Mennonite Church. Brethren Jonas Snider and H. W. Stevanus conducted the services.

SHANTZ - Jan. 12th, 1900, in Berlin, Waterloo Co., Ont., of consumption, John S. Shantz, aged 53 years, 1 month, 8 days. Buried at Cressman's M. H., Breslau, on the 14th. Many friends and acquaintances assembled. Deceased had never taken any interest in religion up to very nearly his end, when his position began to become serious and the light began to shine into his heart, and he saw the folly of his way and began to pray. As the end came he said he was not afraid to die. Services by H. Hallman and Ramer from Phil. 1: 21. He leaves a widow, one son and four daughters, the three eldest grown up.

The following is a letter which he wrote to his sister, from which we can see, how God manifests his love towards us through the Spirit of Christ, if we humble ourselves as we ought and come to him in sincerity and with self-denial.

June 14th 1864.

Dear sister!
As the Lord has spared my life till this present hour, I will not delay any longer to send my greatest love to you my beloved sister.

And I will let you know that preacher Stolm has visited me one day and told me many good things about our great God, and he told me that I should now prepare to meet the Lord in peace; that he expected my days in this world would be short and my heart felt not sorry to hear it; for I hope if the Lord should end my life immediately, I could meet my God in peace; and I will pray earnestly to my God, for I don't know when the Lord will take me to that sweet happy home from whence I will never return any more. I often felt glad that I could soon go home to meet my two little brothers who have gone before me, but now the time is here when I shall go and meet them in that sweet happy home; and when I am once there I shall never wish to come back upon this earth any more. But I wish that all my brothers and sisters would try to follow me, for which I hope there is no doubt you will pray earnestly to that all saving God.
I feel tired and think it is time for me to come to a close. I send my best respects to you all.

Dear reader, Have you also, yet perceived that God is gracious, as this youth who could so rejoice in view of the end of this, his earthly life, which his disease thus pointed out to him. 0! bethink thyself for once and pray to God as David did: Lord so teach me to number my days that I may apply my heart to wisdom. For such wisdom we should all pray, because not every one like this youth will be laid low with a lingering disease, therefore let us become obedient to him while we are in good health. The Lord is so gracious, so kind and so merciful if we only deny ourselves and become obedient to his merciful instructions then, we may also, already in our healthful days, have the assurance of the heavenly sweetness even as this youth in his sickness could rejoice in view of his passing over beyond the grave.
0! why then will we not accept the free grace, the glad tidings of the gospel? If we lead a godly life, we have, even in this world more enjoyment, (than if we live in sin) and also the promise of future salvation and all
that it costs to yield obedience to Jesus Christ is our self-will.

O could we with this youth exclaim,
When the messenger of death shall come,
"I would no longer here remain,
I, go to that sweet, happy home."

There I'll meet my little brothers,
Who went to heaven long ago;
I shall be happy then for ever,
And wish no more to dwell below.

O brothers! sisters! ! follow me,
I beseech you, forget it not!
"Come unto me," God calls to you;

OLIVER S. SHANTZ M. M. E. DETROIT, MICH.

When football enthusiasts speak of the Rangers and their deeds of prowess on the green, the name of Oliver Shantz, full back, is generally mentioned in eulogistic terms. Mr. Shantz was a good player; he possessed a cool judgment and plenty of stamina. He shone at manly sport and shines today as a Master Mechanical Engineer.

He left Berlin in 1889 to attend Cornell University, Ithaca N. Y. and took up a course in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. He graduated in 1893, obtaining the degree of M. E. In 1893-4, he designed, installed and put into operation, the present plant of the Jacob Y. Shantz & Son Co's. button manufactory, Berlin. For a twelve-month, he was with Schaefer & Budenburg Co. of Brooklyn N. Y., manufacturers of steam gauges and engineering appliances. Then for four years Mr. Shantz was engaged on the Sibley College faculty, in the experimental Mechanical Engineering department of Cornell University, at the end of which period he obtained his Master degree, M. M. E.

He was an industrious student, and while taking the courses at Cornell, spent the summer vacation with various large manufacturing firms, thus combining the practical and actual with the theoretical. He spent considerable time in the workshops of the Otis Elevator Co. Yonkers, N. Y., the Hendrick Ice Machine Co. Carbondale Pa. and one year with Thos. A. Edison, the famous inventor, as Assistant Engineer in the Edison Portland Cement Co. at Stewardsville, N. J. Another year was spent with the Westinghouse Church Kerr Co., Consulting and Contracting Engineers. The recital of the time spent by Mr. Shantz in preparing for his life work, shows that he intended to reach a high grade in his profession.

For five years afterwards he was in the employ of the Rand Drill Co. of New York, Manufacturers of Compressed Air and Mining Machinery, in the capacity of Assistant Chief Engineer, and during the period filled many important commissions. Of late, he has been and is now with the Ingersoll Rand Co., as their travelling expert in Hydro-Pneumatic Engineer-ing with headquarters at Detroit, Mich. Among the societies of which Mr. Shantz is a member are: American Society of Mechanical Engineers; Engineers Club of New York; The Western Railway Club of Chicago ; Delta Lau Delta Fraternity, of Cornell Town & Gown Club, Cornell, and Cornell University Club of New York.

Mr. Shantz has made good and his many friends in Berlin will congratulate him on his success.

Hallman. - Mary (Clemens) Hallman was born Sept. 11, 1834; died Jan. 17, 1915, at the ripe old age of 80 y. 4 m. 6 d. She was united in wedlock July 18, 1852, with John S. Hallman, whose beloved companionship she enjoyed for 41 years. He preceded her 21 years. This union was blessed with a family of 5 sons and 7 daughters, all of whom are still living except one daughter who died in 1882. She was converted early in life and was a faithful and consistent member of the Mennonite Church for over 60 years. She was blessed with a wonderful constitution, for besides the cares and duties of raising a large family, she managed many a time to lend a helping hand in the families of neighbors, often succeeding well in the treatment of sick children in those olden days when doctors were few and far away. In her declining years she was afflicted with rheumatism and often longed to depart and be with Christ, but although she suffered much at times, she always seemed to be resigned to the will of the Lord, and we have the blessed hope that He has taken her to Himself. Funeral services were conducted at the Blenheim Church by E. S. Bauman from Jno. 14: 18, 19, in German, and Jonas Snider from Rev. 14: 13, in English. Buried in cemetery near the church

Hallman. - Sister Mary Hallman (nee Clemens) relict of the late John S. Hallman was born Sept. 11, 1834; died Jan. 17, 1915, at the age of 80 y. 4 m. 6 d. She suffered a good deal during the last two years of her life, but died in the blessed hope of a blissful immortality. She was married to John S. Hallman 52 years ago. They had a family of 5 sons and 7 daughters. who all survive her except 1 daughter. Her husband preceded her 21 years. The funeral services were conducted at the Blenheim Mennonite Church on Jan. 20, Bro. E. S. Bauman preached in German from Jno. 14: 19, and Bro. Jonas Snider in English from Rev. 14: 13, to a full house. Interment in the cemetery adjoining.

Shantz. - Aaron Shantz was born near Haysville, Ont., May 27, 1839; died May 27, 1917; aged 78 y. He was twice married. On June 10, 1863, he was united in marriage with Barbara Nahrgang, which union was blessed with 5 daughters. After the decease of his first wife he was again married to Mary Biehn on Dec. 23, 1877. To this union were born 2 daughters. He is survived by a sorrowing widow, 7 daughters, 30 grandchildren, 3 brothers, 4 sisters and a host of relatives and friends. He was a member of the Mennonite Church for many years. Funeral services were conducted by Bros. Osias Cressman and Manasseh Hallman at the Geiger Church, Waterloo, Ont. By a daughter.

Shantz.-Daniel Shantz was born in Wilmot Tp., Jan. 4, 1844; died at his home near Haysville, Ont., where he had spent the greater part of his life, Oct. 7, 1936; aged 92 y. 9 m. 3 d. On March 10, 1868, he was married to Mary Nahrgang, who preceded him in death 14 years ago. One daughter (Annie) also preceded him. He leaves 4 sons (Norman, Uzziah, Joseph and Simeon), 2 daughters (Ella-Mrs. E. Schmitt, and Clara-Mrs. J. Mackenzie), 4 sisters, 29 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, besides many other relatives and friends. He united with the Mennonite Church in youth and remained a faithful member till death. He was blessed with good health and was seldom absent from church or Sunday school until the last year of his life, being bedfast the last few months. Funeral services were held Oct. 11 at the home and in Geiger Mennonite Church in charge of Bros. Manasseh Hallman, Henry King, and Moses H. Roth. Remains laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

Hannah Shantz, wife of the late Daniel E. Cressman, died on Tuesday, March 5, 1940 in her 92nd year, at the home of her daughter (Mrs. Jacob Axt) with whom she had her home. She was born near Haysville, Ont., the eldest daughter of Joseph Y. and Elizabeth (Stauffer) Shantz. In 1874 she was married to Daniel E. Cressman and lived for some years in Oxford county. After retiring from the farm they lived in New Hamburg until the death of her husband, after which she lived with her daughters. She is survived by 2 sons (Alvin of Ceylon, Sask,; and Joseph of Kitchener), 3 daughters (Mrs. Emanuel Schmitt of Baden, Mrs. Jacob Axt of Petersburg, and Mrs. Irvin Gimbel of Breslau), and 2 sisters (Mrs. Moses Cressman and Mrs. Ezra Cressman of New Hamburg). She was preceded in death by her daughter (Agnes) in 1917 and her husband in 1925, also by 7 brothers and 2 sisters. She was a faithful member of the Biehn Mennonite Church for many years and was interested in all her activities. In her latter years she often expressed her desire to go home and after a brief illness this wish was realized. The funeral services were in charge of Bros. L. H. Witmer, Orphen Wismer, and M. H. Roth at the Biehn Mennonite Church. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

"The death of Mrs. Susan Schafer, 86, occurred at her residence, 79 Brubacher street, last evening. She had been ill only a few days.

Deceased was born in Wilmot Tp. on July 6, 1850, a d/o the late Joseph Y.Shantz and wife, the late Elizabeth Stauffer. She was a member of Bethany Mennonite Church and of the Mission Circle. Deceased was twice married,in 1877 to the late Noah Bean, and in 1912 to the late John Schafer, who died in 1908 and 1923 respectively.

Sudden Death of Waterloo County Farmers

The sudden deaths of two well known Waterloo County farmers occurred on Friday, when Solomon Shantz, a Wilmot Township man living about a mile south of Wilmot Centre dropped dead while hitching up his horse. He had been quite well. He suffered an attack of heart failure.
The deceased was 65 years of age. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon at 1: 30 from the residence to Geiger's church and cemetery.

Shantz.-Noah S., youngest son of Joseph Y. and Elizabeth (Stauffer) Shantz, was born in Wilmot Twp., on May 16, 1859; died at his home in Baden, Ont., May 7, 1936. He was in his 77th year. He had been in failing health for some time, and while he was able to be around, his death came suddenly, due to a heart attack. On March 6, 1883, he was united in marriage to Susannah B. Cassel, also of Wilmot Twp. After their marriage they moved to their homestead farm where they resided until thirteen years ago when they took up their residence in the village of Baden, Ont. This union was blessed with 11 children, 6 of whom have predeceased him. Those surviving are his wife, 3 sons and 2 daughters (Laura, wife of Tobias Shantz of Waterloo; Marian, wife of Reuben Steiner of Lima, Ohio; Lincoln C. of Kitchener; Walter C. on the old homestead; Dr. Stauffer C., also of Kitchener), 10 grandchildren, 1 brother, 4 sisters, and a host of friends. In the winter of 1886 he with his companion confessed Christ as their personal Savior and united with the Mennonite Church to which faith he remained true to the end. He was a member of the Blenheim congregation and served as an officer of the Sunday school for a number of years and was at the time of his death a member of the board of trustees. The funeral was held May 10, with services at his home and also at the Blenheim Mennonite Church, conducted by M. H. Shantz, assisted by M. Hallman. Text, I Pet. 1: 3-5. Cressman.--Elizabeth, daughter of the late Jos. Y. Schantz, died July 11, 1946, in her eighty-fifth year. In her youth she accepted Christ and united with the Mennonite Church, to which she remained true to the end. In 1881 she was married to Moses M. Cressman, a deacon, who predeceased her eight years ago. Surviving are 2 sons (Ivan and Addis), one daughter (Mrs. Zenas Snyder), and one sister (Mrs. Louisa Cressman). she was an invalid for the last several years of her life. Funeral services were held at her late home and at the Biehn Mennonite Church, New Hamburg, Ont., in charge of M. H. Hallman and C. C. Cressman.

Cressman. --- Louisa, daughter of the late Joseph Y. and Elizabeth (Stauffer) Shantz, was born near Haysville, Ont., in 1865; passed away June 20, 1950; aged 85 y. In 1886 she was married to Ezra Cressman, who preceded her in death. She and her husband were residents of Wilmot Twp., their entire lifetime, having farmed for many years. Soon after marriage she became a Christian and joined the Biehn Mennonite Church, where she continued as an active member until her passing. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Their home was blessed with 3 sons (Leander and Howard, who predeceased her, and Curtis, a bishop in the Mennonite Church, who resides on the home farm). She also leaves 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She and her husband established a family altar so that the family might worship the Lord together as the children grew up. She had comparatively good health until a month before her death, when she suffered a stroke. Funeral services were conducted June 23 at the home and at the Biehn Church by Manasseh Hallman and M. H. Roth. Her body was laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining the church.

HALLMAN. - Catharine (Shantz) Hallman died Dec. 1, 1905, aged 63y., 2m. She was the wife of Jacob Hallman, who still survives. Beside her husband she leaves three children and eight grandchildren. A week or two before death came she wished to have the family gathered back to the old home and remarked that she thought it was the last time they would be together here. She was a member of the Mennonite church for many years and a faithful Christian to the end. For years she was a patient sufferer and we now praise God for the good evidence and the bright hope that she is now free forever from all suffering. The children and one grandchild are in the service of Christ. Pray for the husband that he may heed the loud call to keep the commandments of the Lord. A large congregation assembled at the funeral services which were held Dec. 5 at the Latschar church, near Mannheim, Waterloo Co., Ont., where Noah Stauffer and A. D. Wenger spoke from II Cor. 4: 17-5: 1.

SHANTZ. - Bro. Menno M. Shantz was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., April 4, 1850, died at his home in Kitchener, Ont., dec. 11, 1917; aged 67y. 8m. 7d. On Nov. 27, 1877, he was united in marriage with Susannah Bowman, to which union were born 4 sons, and 2 daughters, 4 of those survive. In August, 1878, he was received into the Mennonite church, of which he has remained a faithful member till his death. Funeral Dec. 15 at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, conducted by the brethren, David Wismer and U.K. Weber. Text, I John 2: 17. His body was laid to rest in the Breslau cemetery.

On the 27th of March 1899, near Mannheim, Waterloo Co., Ont., Sister Lydia, daughter of Joshua Y. Shantz and wife of Pre. Moses C. Bowman, aged 41 years, 2 months and 6 days. Buried on the 30th in the Latschar graveyard. Funeral services by Bish. Amos Cressman in German, and by Noah Stauffer in English from Phil. 1: 21. Besides her husband she leave four sons, one daughter and many other relatives and friends to mourn the lose of one who was dearly beloved. God comfort the bereaved ones in their affliction.

Snyder - Lucinda Shantz was born in Wilmot Twp., Ont.; died at her home near New Dundee, Ont., Nov 2, 1943: aged 84 y. She was united in marriage to David Snyder. To this union were born 6 children, 4 of whom survive (Eldon, Alvin, Ida, and Mary, all at home). She was the last surviving member of the Joshua Y. Shantz family. She was a member of the Mennonite Church in which faith she died. Her life was a silent testimony. She was much concerned for her children. Funeral services were held at the home in charge of Bro. Moses N. Baer and at the Blenhiem Mennonite Church in charge of Bros. C. C. Cressman and Manasseh Hallman. Burial in the adjoining cemetery.

SNYDER. - Veronica Shantz was born Jan. 5, 1843. She was married to John K. Snyder March 26, 1861. To this union were born 11 children (Ephraim, Ervin, Barbara, Emmanuel, Annie, Mary Ann, David, Veronica, Dilman, Herman, and Olivia). Emmanuel and David predeceased her. She died at her home in Wilmot Tp., Waterloo Co., Ont., Nov. 22, 1935; aged 92 y. 10 m. 17 d. She leaves 9 children, 26 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 3 brothers (David, Stauffer, and Herman Shantz), and a host of relatives and friends. She was one of the pioneers in the community in which she lived. They started their home in the woods, doubtless with many hardships, but as the years rolled by they were able to build up a nice comfortable home. In this same home she lived 74 years amid all the changes that come in life. Oct. 23, 1900, she was bereft of her husband and she lived a widow's life with her family for 35 years. She was a good mother, "a mother in Israel," always willing to do for others. She was wonderfully blessed with health and strength until the last few years of her life. Her thinking capacity, and finally her bodily strength began to fail, and for only two weeks she was confined to her bed-without sickness or pain, just faded away until she peacefully fell asleep in Jesus. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord." Funeral services were conducted at the home of Dilman Snyder on Nov. 26 by Bro. Orphen Wismer, and at the Shantz Church near Baden, Ont., by Bro. Jonas Snyder (Text, Prov. 22: 28) and Bro. Manasseh Hallman (Text, Jno. 17: 24), where a large number of people gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed. She was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

Mary Ann Shantz, beloved wife of Wendell Shantz, was born near Baden, Ont., July 31, 1846; died Feb. 13, 1924; aged 76 y. 6 m. 12 d. She was married to Wendell Shantz, Nov. 28, 1870. This union was blessed with ten children of whom 2 sons and 2 daughters preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, 3 sons, 3 daughters, 17 grandchildren, 3 brothers, and 1 sister.Four years ago they observed their golden wedding anniversary with their family and relatives. In December, 1922, she was stricken with paralysis and was rendered almost helpless for 14 months until the message came, "Come home." Funeral services were conducted Feb. 16 by Orphen Wismer and Manasseh Hallman. Text, Psa. 27: 10. Interment in the Shantz cemetery.

Shantz -- Stauffer L Shantz, of Baden, Ont., son of the late David Y. and Barbara (Stauffer) Shantz was born Jan. 24, 1862; died after a lingering illness, Dec. 31, 1938; aged 76 y. 11 m. 7 d. On March 6, 1894, he was married to Magdalena Snyder of Natchez. On Feb. 9, 1932, his beloved wife passed away. On Oct. 2, 1935, he was again married to Mrs. Alberta Bowman of Kitchener, who survives to mourn his departure; also 2 brothers (David S., of Waterloo and Herman S., of Wilmot), and a host of relatives and friends. During his illness he was baptized and we trust he is resting in peace. Funeral services were conducted Jan. 3 at the Shantz Church by E. O. DILMAN BRUBACHER SHANTZ

Dilman Brubacher Shantz is a well-known figure in business circles, being president of the Jacob Y. Shantz & Son Company, Limited, of Berlin, and also of a company operating under the same name at Buffalo, New York. In these connections he is engaged in the manufacture of buttons, and under his capable management the enterprise has developed to large proportions. The policy of the company has ever been a commendable one. All transactions are conducted on strict business principles and the trust of those with whom they have had dealings has been unequivocally given them.

Mr. Shantz of this review was born in Berlin, November 18, 1857, his parents being Jacob Yost and Anna (Brubacher) Shantz, both of whom were natives of Berlin, where their parents settled in 1806. They came from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where the first representatives in the maternal line had settled on coming to America about 1650. The Shantz family was founded in the new world a few years later. His maternal ancestors bought their first land fifty miles west of Philadelphia and were among the very first settlers in that part of Pennsylvania. They were farmers and merchants and also built the first grist mill of the locality, which is still in possession of the family.

In the year 1806 the parents of Jacob Yost Shantz came from Pottstown, Pennsylvania, to Canada, took up land and cleared the bush country in Waterloo county. They, too, were pioneer residents and aided in reclaiming a hitherto wild and undeveloped region for the purposes of civilization. They operated the first sawmill in this section and were in many ways connected with the material growth and upbuilding of this portion of the province. Being United Empire Loyalists, they followed the British flag into Canada. The maternal grandfather of Mr. Shantz took a very active and helpful part in laying out the early roads of the county and in otherwise advancing those interests which indicated that the seeds of civilization had been planted and that this was to become some day a populous and prosperous district.

Jacob Yost Shantz, the father of our subject, was reared in Berlin, where he acquired a common school education. His early life was devoted to lumber interests. He engaged in the operation of a sawmill, conducted a lumberyard and became an extensive contractor and builder. He has also been prominently identified with manufacturing interests in later years, operating a factory for the manufacture of boots and shoes. In 1870 he established the button factory, becoming associated with a German button manufacturer and a few years later he bought out the interests of his partner, continuing to carry on the business in his own name until a few years ago, when he retired to enjoy a well-earned and richly merited rest. He is now eighty-five years of age. His life has been one of intense and well- directed activity, in which he has made good use of his opportunities, and he belongs, too, to that class of representative men who while promoting individual success also advance the general welfare. His family numbered twelve children, five sons and seven daughters. He has always been deeply interested in the welfare of Berlin, but has been content to do his public service as a private citizen, never seeking or desiring office. He acted, however, as mayor of Berlin for one year and brought to the discharge of his duties the same excellent business qualifications that characterized his career in commercial and manufacturing circles. Another important labor which Mr. Shantz has performed has been in connection with the development and upbuilding of Manitoba and the North-West. He began operations there in 1874 and on behalf of the Mennonites has devoted a large portion of his time up to the present to this work in making a general prospectus setting forth the advantages of the country, its natural resources and its climate in the districts mentioned. In order to accomplish these results he has given liberally of his own private fortune, and through his endeavors has secured large sums from other friends of the Mennonite Society for the purpose of forming the colony, and for the development of that country which constitutes the first white settlement in Manitoba and the North-West. He has thus been instrumental in thousands of the people of this sect becoming colonists in that district and thus settling up the country, aiding in its reclamation from a wild and unimproved district and converting it to the uses of civilization.

Mr. Shantz of this review was the seventh in order of birth in his father's family and is a representative in the sixth generation of the family since the arrival of his ancestors in America and the planting of the name on the soil of the new world. His education was acquired in the Central public school of Berlin, supplemented by a business course pursued in the United States. At the age of twenty years he was admitted to partnership by his father and for many years has been the general manager of the button factory. When he entered the business he made it his duty to master it in principle and detail, thoroughly acquainting himself with every department of the work. The company was incorporated in 1891, at which time Mr. Shantz was chosen president and general manager. Employment is now furnished to two hundred operatives in the Berlin factory and an equal number in the Buffalo factory. The company are the largest button manufacturers of Canada and the trade extends throughout the Dominion, also to Halifax, New York and Chicago. The plant is equipped with the latest improved machinery for carrying on the business, and a spirit of justice and consideration is ever maintained toward the employees, while the many patrons of the house know that the company is thoroughly reliable and trustworthy in all its transactions. Moreover, Mr. Shantz has been not only a follower in the progress that has been made in the special line of his manufacturing interests, but has on the contrary been a leader. About seventy-five per cent, of the improvements made in the button industry have originated in his plant, to be adopted later extensively not only in Canada but also in the United States. Owing to the improved machinery which Mr. Shantz has invented the labor saving devices amount to sixty per cent. while the quality of the product has been developed to the highest standard. He has used every effort to acquaint himself with the business and served for a period under one of the leading professors of Berlin, Germany, for the acquirement of knowledge pertaining to the development of the button industry, including the styles and the processes of simplifying the methods of production. He also pursued a course for developing the basic in connection with the machinery from a mechanical point of view. His father, during the early manhood of the son, was largely interested in the development of Manitoba and the North-West, beginning his operations there in 1874, so that much of the burden and responsibility of the enterprise rested upon the shoulders of the young man, who resolutely took up his task and with the thoroughness which characterized him in all lines of life he gained a mastery of the business, which has placed him in the front rank as one of the representatives of the button trade in the new world. A visitor at the factory cannot but be interested and impressed with the methods that are there pursued. A most excellent system has been evolved whereby the maximum of result is attained through the minimum of labor. This is the secret of all genuine success that the output may be produced at the low- est possible cost, yet not at the sacrifice of good results. This study of the economy of time, labor and machinery has brought forth the captains of industry and with this class Mr. Shantz deserves to be numbered.

In 1889 Mr. Shantz was married to Miss Elizabeth F. Martin, a daughter of Amos Martin of Waterloo county, also a representative of one of the early pioneer families on the frontier, the Martins having resided here since about 1811. They, too, were United Empire Loyalists and of Pennsylvania Dutch stock. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Shantz have been born three children : Mary Wilma, Arnott Martin and Russell Ellsworth.

Mr. Shantz is a Methodist in religious faith and in politics is a Conservative. He has served as water and park commissioner, but otherwise has held no public offices, having devoted his entire time to his business interests. Various positions of public trust have been tendered him, but he has not desired to become an official, and he feels that he has done more for his city in the establishment of industries which have furnished employment to a large force of workmen. A man of strong individuality and indubitable probity, one who has attained to a due measure of success in the affairs of life and whose influence has ever been exerted in the direction of the good, the true and the beautiful, this prominent manufacturer and worthy citizen assuredly deserves representation in this volume.

Daman Shantz - A former button manufacturer of Kitchener, and widely known here, Dilman Shantz, 81, died Thursday in Buffalo after an eight weeks illness. Born in Kitchener on Nov 6, 1857, Mr. Shantz was associated with his father in the button firm of Jacob Y. Shantz and Sons, Berlin, for many years. The local firm established branches at Buffalo and New York, and Mr. Shantz went to Buffalo about 20 years ago to take charge of the plant there. Mr. Shantz was known in the industry in Buffalo and abroad as the inventor of a basically new movement in machinery that is still in use in the manufacture of buttons all over the world. An able business executive, Mr. Shantz trained many capable young men in his plant. He studied abroad as a younger man and at that time had met Kaiser Wilhelm. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Shantz, a daughter, Mary, and two sons, Arnott M. Shantz, advertising manager of the Buffalo Automobile Company, and Russell E. Shantz, a government inspector.

Death of Mrs. J.B. Detwiler

The many friends of Mr. J.B. Detwiler will be sorry to learn of the death of his wife which occurred on Thursday night at their residence in Didsbury. Mrs. Detwiler was taken ill with pneumonia on Sunday night last, and while hopes for her recovery were not given up till within the last day or two the case was considered serious from the first. She was 64 years of age.

The funeral will take place at the Mennonite Church, Didsbury, on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Mrs. Detwiler leaves no family but her husband to mourn her loss and who has the entire sympathy of the whole community.

Death of Real Old Timer
-
The death of Mr. Ephraim Shantz took place at his home in Didsbury last Thursday, October 27th, after an illness last for some time. The funeral was held on Saturday last and as Mr. Shantz has been a greatly respected and well liked member of the community since before the time there was any such place as Didsbury it was very largely attended. In fact it was the largest funeral ever held in Didsbury.

Mr. Shantz came here 27 years ago with the first settlers in the district, his father, Mr. Jacob Y. Shantz being immigration agent at that time and bringing in these first settlers which also included Mr. Hunsperger the postmaster.

Deceased took up a homestead a short distance northeast of town where he remained for some years, finally building a nice little home in Didsbury which he occupied until his death. He was a prominent member of the Mennonite church and although of a very quiet dispositon and not a man who pushed himself into undue prominence nevertheless took an active part in the welfare of the community being a member of the School Board for some years and also taking a quiet part in other activities. He was greatly respected and well liked by everybody, and his death, while not unlooked for, cast a gloom over the community.

He leaves to mourn his loss one son and two daughters, Bert, Mrs. Abner Hunsperger, Mrs. Alvin Hunsberger and his wife, all of whom have the entire sympathy of the community.

Gehman.-Angeline (Shantz) Gehman, was born at Bridgeport, Ont., April 10, 1846. On May 3, 1864 she was united in marriage with Solomon B. Gehman, and about 9 years later, both were converted and united with the Mennonite Church. On Nov. 26, 1882, Bro. Gehman was ordained to the ministry which position he faithfully filled till Nov. 19, 1912, when he was called to his reward. He was a powerful speaker, and in most of his sermons, laid special emphasis on repentance and getting right with God, being instrumental in a great revival that took place in Waterloo Co., in 1885. This union was blessed with 6 children of whom one son (John) preceded them. Sister Gehman died at the home of her daughter in Waterloo, aged 81 y. 8 m. 23 d., leaving 2 daughters and 3 sons (Susanna - Mrs. John Wismer, Samuel, Esther - Mrs. Norman Gingerich, Willie, and Solomon).The funeral was held at the Waterloo Mennonite Church on Jan. 6, conducted by Jonas Snider and Noah Hunsberger.

PETER E. SHANTZ PASSES AWAY IN EIGHTIETH YEAR

Noted Figure In Preston Life Dies Following Stroke Suffered Last Week ; Church Official For 25 Years

Following a stroke suffered last Wednesday Peter E. Shantz died last evening at his home on Church street in his 80th year. The deceased is survived by his wife three daughters, Miss M. B. Shantz, Philadelphia: Mrs. L. Archibald, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. J. G. Gardner, Regina, Sask. and three sons, Cyrus, of Preston; Samuel, of Toronto and Fred, of Preston. Five brothers, Aaron, Samuel and Daniel, of Kitchener, Frank of the state of Washington and Moses of Didsbury, Alta. and one sister, Mrs. Moses Plowman, of Kitchener, also survive. The funeral will be held on Thursday afternoon from his late residence to the Preston cemetery. The late Mr. Shants was born at Shantz station and came to Preston from Elmira 63 years ago and purchased what is now known as the Shantz foundry from Jacob Wahn. For many years he conducted the foundry business, successfully manufacturing farm implements and later trucks. He retired from active business a few years ago. For many years he had been actively associated with Preston municipal life and always took a keen interest in the town's affairs. He was reeve of Preston at one time and during the federal election of 1896 was the Liberal candidate for the riding and altho defeated polled a large number of votes. The late Mr. Shantz was a faithful member of the United church and for 26 years was recording steward and treasurer of that congregation. At the time of his demise he was senior director of the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance company. Mr. Shantz 's passing removes from Preston, one of the town's most notable figures and his demise is mourned by the entire continuity.

Jacob Beck (born Grand Duchy of Baden, 1816), an enterprising young German, came to Waterloo Township in 1837 from Schenectady, N. Y., having come from Germany the year before. ...Call him Peter … Peter Erb Shantz, born in 1849, to Samuel Y. and Esther (Erb) Shantz. Samuel farmed while Esther raised 13 children at a once-dreamt-of community called Shantz Station about halfway along Highway 7 between Berlin and Guelph.
In his early 20s, Peter was already manufacturing farm implements in Elmira with partner Abraham Z. Detweiler.
Meanwhile, Preston village council was eager to attract industries, so with a $5,000 bonus as the carrot, Shantz and Detweiler agreed to move south.
Backtracking to the early 1850s, Valentine Wahn, John Clare and Jacob Beck operated an iron foundry business on the main road connecting Preston and Berlin.
The frame factory was near the Speed River at the foot of a steep hill. Beck left in 1856, moving to Wilmot Township where he founded Baden. Clare too backed out, so Wahn took over, specializing in making cast-iron stoves.
In 1875, with part of the bonus money, Shantz and Detweiler purchased Wahn's building and established Preston Agricultural Works.

Fire struck in 1883 and Detweiler sold out.
As sole owner, Peter Shantz constructed a solid brick and stone building on the same site and for the next 50 years he produced top-of-the-line farm machinery, warm air furnaces, sleighs and warehouse trucks.
Peter's civic involvement went beyond manufacturing. He was a councillor and deputy-reeve in Preston, sat on the school board, and was the driving force behind erecting Preston's town hall in 1887.
In the 1900 federal election, he placed a close second to George Clare in Waterloo South.
Peter Shantz died in 1928 but the company lasted another four decades. In 1969, it shut down and the property was sold to a Toronto developer who hoped to put up a 12-storey apartment. In 2018, the exact site of his factory is part of the widened intersection at the bottom of Preston, er, Shantz hill....

Shantz.--Jacob E. Shantz was born April 27, 1855; died at Freeport, Ont., Mar. 31, 1922; aged 66 y. 11 m. 4 d. He was married to Lydia Bowman in November, 1877, who with two sons and one daughter and thirteen grandchildren are left to mourn his departure. He left a testimony that all is well and was ready to go and be with Jesus. Funeral services were held on Apr. 4 at the East End Mennonite Church at Kitchener, Ont., conducted by A. B. Snyder and Jonas Snider. Text, Isa. 26: 3. Burial in adjoining cemetery.

Snyder - On the 24th of June, 1898, at Berlin, Waterloo Co., Ont., Mary Ann Shantz, beloved wife of Isaac C. Snyder, aged 43 years, 1 month and 27 days. Sister Snyder leaves a sorrowing husband and six children, the youngest about 7 years old; two children preceded her to the spirit world; also parents, six brothers, three sisters and many friends, who will miss her at her household duties and in the church services. She was resigned to the will of God and was willing to go at the Master's call. Buried on the 20th at C. Eby's meeting house. Services by S. Bowman in German and N. Stauffer in English to a crowded house of attentive hearers.

Moses E. Shantz, 76 years of age, pioneer setter of the Didsbury district, died in a Calgary nursing home on Saturday, February 10.
He was born near Kitchener, Ont., and came to Didsbury in 1900, where he resided until 1933. Since then he had lived with his children.
Deceased is survived by his wife Magdalena; one daughter, Mrs. Ed. Weber, Calgary. Three sons; Lincoln, Kitchener, Ont.; Clayton, Rosebud, Alta.; Vernon, High River, Alta. S. E. SHANTZ is a native of the County of Waterloo, where he was educated and has since been engaged in farming. He was elected township councillor in 1901, which office he has held continually ever since. Mr. Shantz was a member of the board of health of the township of Waterloo for five years.

Bowman. --- Susanna E., daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Y. Shantz, was born in North Dumfries, April 5, 1862; died suddenly at her home in Kitchener, Ont.; aged 82 y. She was a member of the First Mennonite Church. Her husband, Moses C. Bowman, passed away April 28, 1933. Surviving are 4 sons (Alvah S. and Edwin S., Guernsey, Sask.; Henry S. and Moses S., of Kitchener), one daughter (Melinda, of Kitchener), 2 brothers (Daniel, of Kitchener, and Franklin, Wenatchee, Wash.), and 15 grandchildren. Four sisters and six brothers predeceased her. She was a faithful Christian and a real helpmeet in a pastor's responsibility. She was known for her kindliness and hospitality. She will be greatly missed in the church, city, and community, as well as by the family. Funeral services were in charge of the pastor, C. F. Derstine. Text, Num. 23: 10 - "The Victorious End of the Righteous." The brethren S. F. Coffman, M. Hallman, ad Merle Shantz spoke tributes to the departed.

MRS. N. WILDFONG. Sr.

HESPELER, Aug. 29. Following an illness of twelve years, Mrs. Nathaniel Wildfong, Sr., died yesterday, at her home, in Wellington Township. Mrs. Wildfong, was born 80 years ago, in the district where she lived all her life. She was a member of the Tankard Brethren in Christ. Parents of the deceased were the late Mr. and Mrs. Amos Schantz. Surviving are her husband, in Wellington Township; four stepchildren and 20 grandchildren, together with a number of nieces and nephews. One sister, Melinda Schantz, Kitchener, also survives. The remains are resting at the Stager and Co. Funeral Home, Hespeler, until 11 a.m., Friday, when the body will be removed to Wanner's Mennonite Church, for funeral services, at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Wanner's Cemetery.

Amos Shantz

Kitchener - Funeral services were held here Wednesday afternoon for Amos Shantz, 74, of 61 Hohner Ave., who died Saturday afternoon at Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Shantz was born in Wilmot Township on April 29, 1865, and married Clara E. Giller on March 22, 1887, in Kitchener. He attended Zion Evangelical Church.

Besides his wife he is survived by a son, Leslie F. Shantz, at home, a brother, Jacob Shantz of Plattsville, two sisters, a twin, Mrs. Nathaniel Wildfong of Hespeler and Mrs. Melinda Shantz of Kitchener.
