Nancy Weber, maiden name Shantz, daughter of Isaac Shantz, who came from Pennsylvania in 1808 and settled on the farm near Berlin, now in possession of Abram Wambold, was born Aug. 11th, 1817. On the 1st of March, 1836, she was married to Benjamin M. Weber, and moved on lot No. 113, between Bridgeport and Breslau, which was at that time all forest but a few acres. They were of the first settlers, and wolves and other wild beasts and Indians were plentiful. Some years afterward other Mennonite people came in, and they built a house of worship now known as Cressman's Meeting House. Here they lived and worshiped the Lord harmoniously in true unity and spirit together until Nov. 30, 1870, Benjamin Weber died. Since then she remained a widow until her life ended here to begin in glory, which took place April 8th, 1899, at the age of 81 years, 7 months and 27 days. This union was blessed with ten children, of whom only two remain. She was buried at C. Eby's M. H. on the 11th, where a large concourse of friends and relatives were present. Services by Noah Stauffer from Heb. 11: 10, followed by Jacob Woolner. She was a consistent member of the Mennonite Church.

She was born August 21st, 1842, and died September 18th, 1880. After their marriage they moved on the old "Elias Bowman Farm" one mile north of Breslau where they both died. He died December 28th, 1879. They had a family of two children, namely: VII Simon who died in infancy, and VII Lydia Ann who married Simon Schiedel and had a family of two children, named VIII Wesley and VIII Myra, when she died, June 3rd, 1890."

They reside about a mile south-east of Berlin, on the Preston Road where they have a comfortable home. They have no family but have raised several children, namely: Mary Weber, Louis Kramp, Willie Grant and several others."

WEBER - A sad and fatal accident occurred on the 9th of January, resulting in the death of our dear brother, Isaac Weber, of Berlin, Ontario. On the above date, about noon, he started for his home a short distance south-east of Berlin, in company with Bro. Samuel Cressman, and when near the intersection of King and Cedar Strs, the king-bolt of his vehicle dropped out, throwing both men violently to the frozen ground, stunning them. The latter soon recovered, but Bro. Weber was carried to a house near by, he however recovered so far that he could be taken home. Medical aid had been promptly summoned, and his injuries were not considered fatal, but on Sunday following he was taken with an epileptic stroke, rendering him speechless, and from that time he began to sink until Tuesday the 12th when he passed away. He leaves a sorrowing companion, three adopted children (one married), an aged mother, one brother and one sister, besides many near and dear friends who deeply mourn their loss. Bro. Weber was a consistent member of the Mennonite church since his youth, and one of the pioneer Sunday school workers in our church. He always took a lively interest in everything pertaining to the prosperity of the Master's cause. His remains were conveyed to their last earthly resting place at C. Eby's M.H., on the 14th. Funeral services by David Hostetler, of Ohio, in German, and by David Garber, of Ohio, in English, to a house filled to its utmost capacity with sympathizing hearers. Text Isa. 3: 10, 11. Bro. Detwiler.-Nancy Weber was born near Breslau, Ont., March 10, 1853; died at the home of her son, Norman, near Breslau, March 4, 1939; aged 85 y. 11 m. 25 d. In 1878 she was united in marriage to Noah Detwiler, who predeceased her July 14, 1920. This was the first marriage ceremony performed by the late Bishop Elias Weber. To this union were born 3 sons and 3 daughters. One son predeceased the parents in his infancy. There remain to mourn the departure of a faithful Christian mother, 2 sons (Isaiah and Norman of Breslau), 3 daughters (Abbie of Breslau, Mrs. Ephraim Kinzie of Preston, and Mrs. Titus Shantz of Kitchener), 19 grandchildren, and many relatives and friends. When 18 years of age she accepted Christ as her Saviour, united with the Cressman Mennonite Church, and remained a faithful member until the Lord called her home. She always had a bright testimony of peace with God, appreciated in a very grateful and humble manner her salvation experience, and lived an exemplary life. She will be missed as a true Christian mother, a helpful neighbor, and a living witness to the grace of God. Funeral services were conducted on March 8 in the Cressman Mennonite Church at Breslau by Brethren Jonas Snider and Oscar Burkholder. Texts, Job 14: 14; Psa. 71: 20,21.

Weber.-Abram S. Weber was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Nov. 15, 1855; died at his home in Berlin, Ont., March 1, 1913; aged 57 y. 3 m. 15 d. He was married to Esther Scheidel in October, 1877. To this union were born 4 sons and 2 daughters. He leaves to mourn his departure his sorrowing widow, 2 sons, 2 daughters, and 2 grandchildren. His death was caused by paralysis of 9 days' duration. He was a kind and loving husband and father and a good neighbor, and lived an exemplary Christian life, having in his younger years united with the Mennonite Church of which he was still a faithful member at the time of his death. Bro. Weber had been in failing health for some time. We believe that he realized his end was drawing near, and he leaves the comforting hope that he was ready to depart from this world and to meet his blessed Savior on the other shore. Funeral services were conducted at the Cressman Church, Breslau, March 3, by Bro. Jonas Snyder in German and Bro. Oscar Burkholder in English.

"Weber.-On the evening of Oct. 23, 1938, Aaron W. Weber died after an illness of four weeks. He had resided east Elmira, Ont. The funeral was held the following Wednesday from his late home to Elmira Church for service and burial in the adjoining cemetery. His age was seventy-eight years and twenty-four days. He wished to go home, and his wish has been fulfilled. He leaves 7 children: Menno near Elmira, Hannah (Mrs. Recevious Martin), Sarah (Mrs. Moses Weber), Noah,, and Amos near Floradale, Aaron on the old homestead, and quite a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints."

Louis Kramp, for many years a well known Kitchener tailor, died last evening at St. Mary's Hospital in his 81st year after nearly a year of illness. Born at Shantz Station in April, 1857, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kramp, Mr. Kramp married Lydia Bobzeen, who predeceased him in 1921. He attended St. Matthew's Lutheran church.

One daughter. Mrs. G. Weidenhammer of this city, survives together with one sister. Mrs. C. Reist, three grandchildren and great grandchild, also of Kitchener. One daughter, Mrs. David Bingeman died In 1914.

Public funeral services will be held Sunday at two o'clock at his home, 93 Chestnut street, followed at three o'clock by services at Cressman Mennonite church, Breslau and burial in the Cressman Cemetery. Rev. John Schmieder will be in charge.

Mrs. Harvey W. Schmitt, nee Ida R. Hannenberg, 64, of R.R. 3 Kitchener, Sunnyside, died her home Saturday following a lengthy illness. She was born in Kitchener on Dec. 21 1877 She attended Bethany Mennonite Church.

Forty years ago in Kitchener she married Harvey W Schmitt. who survives. together with three sons, Victor and Carl of Kitchener, Clarence of Williamsburg, four daughters, Mrs. John Bonn of Centreville, Mrs. Edward Fyfe of Kitchener, Mrs. Harvey Zeller of Sunnyside and Mrs Herbert Gole of Breslau Other survivors are one brother. Alfred Hannenberg of Collingwood, a stepbrother, Herbert Reiko of Kitcnener, a sister. Mrs. Lena Miehm of Sunnyside, and a stepsister. Mrs. Frederick Brandt of Grand Rapids, Mich. Shantz. - Mary Ann, daughter of the late Noah and Nancy (Weber) Dettweiler, was born near Bloomingdale, Ont., Oct. 5, 1881; died Sept. 20, 1942. She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ and united with the Mennonite Church at Breslau in her sixteenth year. She was united in marriage to Bro. Titus Shantz of Kitchener, Dec. 30, 1908. To this union were born 4 children (Ward, who died in infancy, and Melvin, Clair, and Anna). These three children survive and are at home with their, father. Sister Shantz is also survived by 2 sisters (Abbie Dettweiler, of Breslau; and Mrs. Ephraim Kinzie, of Preston, Ont.), 2 brothers (Isaiah and Norman, both of Breslau), as well as by 16 nieces and nephews. One brother pre-ceded her in death. Her death took place very unexpectedly, and came as a great shock to both her family and the brotherhood at Kitchener where she was a member in good standing. Although a woman of quiet disposition, she manifested an exemplary character characterized by many sterling Christian qualities. Her simple faith in God, her trust in the merits of His Son as Saviour, and her communion with Him by prayer were steadfast even though she suffered much through physical infirmities during her whole life. She was a true mother in Israel and manifested a conscientious concern for the present and future needs of her family, both temporally and spiritually. Funeral services were held Sept. 23 at the home, and at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, with Bros. Oscar Burkholder, Jonas Snider, and Merle Shantz in charge. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Isiah Dettweiler

Isiah Dettweiler of RR 2, Breslau, died Sunday at the South Waterloo Memorial Hospital, Galt, after a brief illness. He was 80.

He was born in Waterloo Township, Dec. 29, 1888. a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Noah Dettweiler and lived in the township all his life. He farmed there until his retirement in 1954.

Mr. Dettweiler was a member of the Breslau Mennonite Church. He was predeceased, in 1960, by his wife, the former Lucinda Bechtel, whom he married Nov. 20, 1918, in Waterloo township.

Surviving are four sons, Ward of Preston and Harold, Clarke and Glenn, all of Breslau; four daughters, Mrs. Laverne (Margaret) Good of Waterloo, Mrs. John (Mary) Sayer of Carstairs, Alta., Mrs. Silvine (Ruth) Roth of RR 1, New Hamburg, and Norma of Breslau; one brother, Norman of Preston; one sister, Mrs. Nancy Kinzie of Preston, and 33 grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two sisters and one brother.

Funeral service was held at the Breslau Mennonite Church last Wednesday. Burial took place in the church cemetery. Rev. Laurence Martin conducted the service.

Friends may call at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira, after 7 p.m. today, until Sunday at 1 p.m., when removal will be made to his home, RR 1, St.. Jacobs, where funeral service will be held on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m.

Then to the Conestogo Mennonite Meeting House for further service and burial in the adjoining cemetery.

The funeral was held from the home of her son, Mr. and Mrs. Cleason Bearinger, RR 1, Elmira, on Thursday, April 17. Removal was then made to the Elmira Mennonite Meeting House for further service and burial in the adjoining cemetery.

A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Elias Weber, he was born in Woolwich Township June 15, 1898. He was a member of South Peel Mennonite Church.

Surviving besides his wife, the former Salome Weber, are one son, Noah of RR 1, Wallenstein: five daughters. Mrs. Elam S. (Esther) Horst of RR 1. Elmira, Mrs. Amon G. (Lydia) Martin of RR 2. Waterloo, Mrs. Elo S. (Susannah Martin of RR 1, Waterloo. Mrs. Amos (Rebecca) Burkhart of RR 3. Wallenstein, and Annie at home; six brothers. Onias of Hawkesville, Daniel of RR 3. Wallenstein, Manassa of Parkhill and Elias, Jacob and Noah all of RR 4. Elmira; two sisters. Mrs. Noah (Lovina) Bauman of RR 1, St. Jac- obs and Mrs. Onias (Katie) Martin of RR I. Elmira. He was also survived by 22 grandchildren.

Mr. Weber was predeceased by one son and two brothers and three grandchildren.

The body was at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor in Elmira until Sunday at 10 a.m. when removal was made to the home for a short funeral service Monday at 8:30 a.m. standard time, then moved to South Peel Mennonite meeting house for a further service and burial in the adjoining cemetery.

MRS. DAVID BINGEMAN

The funeral of Mus. David Bingeman. of Breslau, aged thirty-four, who injured her leg while jumping from a vehicle in a runaway ten days ago, and who succumbed Monday morning to lockjaw at the Berlin and Waterloo Hospital, as a result of her injuries, will be held from the residence at Breslau, to-morrow afternoon at two o'clock, to the Mennonite church for service. The remains will be interred, in the Mennonite cemetery. She is survived by her husband and three small children.

Clarence Schmitt, 57, of RR 2, Petersburg, died today at K-W Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born at German Mills, a son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Harvey Schmitt and lived at RR 2, Petersburg for the last 18 years.
Mr. Schmitt was employed by Master Feeds, Baden.

He was a member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mannheim, and the church council.

Surviving are his wife, the former Aleda Bonn whom he married in Kitchener in 1929; two sons, Fred of New Hamburg and Stuart of Elmira; two brothers Victor or RR 4, Kitchener and Carl of Kitchener; four sisters, Mrs. John (Beatrice) Bonn, Mrs Edward (Tille) Fyfe, Mrs. Harvey (Gladys) Zeller and Mrs. Herbert (Viola) Gole, all of Kitchener, and four grandchildren.

The body will be at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home from 7 p.m. Saturday until 11 a.m. Monday when removal will be made to St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church for service at 3 p.m. Rev. Oliver Repo and Rev. Delton Glebe will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.

Donations to the memorial fund of St. James Church will be accepted as expressions of sympathy.

Salome Buehler Martin 1909 - 1973

Whether working as a maid in a bank manager's home or serving as the wife of a pastor in a rural, emerging congregation on the fringes of the Mennonite Community, Salome modeled the virtues of a Christian woman.

Reaching out to the Neighbourhood

Salome Buehler was born near St. Jacobs, into the Old Order Mennonite family of Abraham and Nancy (Moyer) Buehler. When Salome was nine years old the family lost their father and provider, so the children had to work to help with the family finances. Among Salome's jobs were working in a canning factory in Vineland and as a live-in maid for a bank manager in Waterloo - complete with a maid's uniform and cap. In 1932 Salome was married to Amos B. Martin. In 1936, however, they left the Old Order community and moved to Preston where Amos became a foreman for a steel products company. Times were hard and Salome helped to supplement their scanty income by baking coffee cakes and chelsea buns and peddling them in Preston. She took in boarders, made craft items from driftwood, made artificial flowers, did sewing for other people and raised strawberries and raspberries as part of her efforts to help make ends meet. Amos and Salome joined the Preston Mennonite Church, where Salome became active in the women's sewing circle. In the days when there were few organized girls' clubs, Salome felt called to start a club in her home for friends of her daughters, Mary and Martha, including neighbourhood girls who did not attend church. Amos remodelled a chicken coop for their club house. The girls financed their club by bringing five or ten cents to each meeting and wore blue ribbons to their meetings, calling themselves the "Blue Ribbon Club." On one occasion, they even had their picture in the Kitchener-Waterloo Record. Salome told Bible stories, taught songs, and planned their craft projects, which included stuffing teddy bears and making scrapbooks for hospitals and nursing homes. Salome related to and witnessed to her neighbours no matter what their financial status, colour, religion or mental stability. One of their neighbours had emotional problems and when he committed suicide, Salome was there to help the family in their time of grief. In 1950 Amos and Salome moved to Moorefield, Ontario to help with an emerging congregation, and Amos was chosen to serve as pastor.

In the early 1960s Amos and Salome left Moorefield for Doon, and it was not long until Salome was diagnosed as having leukemia. When she passed away at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto on January 13, 1973 many of the nurses and sisters at the hospital told Amos and the family how her life and cheerful witness had affected their lives.

Interment in Hagey cemetery.

The casket will remain open in the church from 1:30 until time of service.

Clare was born on a farm where now are the Eastwood Collegiate and Sunnyside Home. With his parents \endash Titus and Mary Ann (Detweller) Shantz \endash he attended First Mennonite then Stirling Avenue churches and was fully involved in each as Sunday school teacher, song leader, in male quartets, the Literary Society, Young People's Bible meetings, etc. In the early 1940s, Clare attended Ontario Mennonite Bible School.

Nora was cook there, making meals for an average of 125 \endash 150 students: three meals a day, seven days a week. They were married in July 1945 and in September that year Clare joined Nora as a member of Erb Street. He was chosen by lot and ordained as deacon in 1948, serving until 1980, then was deacon emeritus until his death.In the 1950s Clare fell from a ladder, while working as a carpenter for J C Hallman, and severed his spinal column. After months of adjustment and rehabilitation, he continued as service manager at J C Hallman's until retirement. Some of Clare's many achievements \endash despite being restricted to a wheelchair \endash were getting a ramp built at Erb Street Church, and building trailers designed for his special needs so that he and Nora could travel.Nora's birthplace was on the farm situated on the north west corner of Columbia and Philip Streets in Waterloo. Her parents were Mennonite and Hattie (Lichty) Burkhart and the family attended Erb Street Mennonite Church from about 1922. There was a time at Erb Street when Sunday school pupils could choose their teacher: Nora moved with one class of teenage girls for nine years. The Sunshine Band Committee (later Girls' Club), Junior Charity Circle, the Beacon's WMSA (later WMSC Circle) and librarian were other leadership roles Nora took.In 1958, 1959 and 1960 Nora underwent many operations and treatment for cancer: one operation removed one eye and half of her upper jaw. She was told she would probably not live for another year.

Anna Mary went to be with her Lord on Monday, August 23, 2021 at the age of 99. She was born June 24, 1922 in Kitchener, daughter of Titus and Maryann (Dettweiler) Shantz.

Surviving are two sons Maynard and Myron. Predeceased by her husband Elton on December 8, 1968 in a car accident.

Anna lived with her parents on a farm near Kitchener until 1945, then worked in Kitchener for two years until her marriage in 1947. They moved to Preston for two years, then moved to Alma. Predeceased by brothers and their wives Melvin and Mildred Shantz, Clare and Nora Shantz, in-laws Leander and Marjorie Cressman, Ferman Cressman, Sim and Vera Weaver, Una Cressman, Mary Cressman, Cora Cressman, Pearl Cressman, Leona Cressman, Alfred and Olive High, Clayton and Mabel Shantz, Lloyd and Edith Woolner, Clifford and Gladys Cressman, Harold and Nelda Cressman, Clayton and Pauline Cressman; niece and nephews Charles, Florence and Robert Woolner.

Miss Kinzie was born in Preston, on July 26, 1914 and lived most of her life in the area. She was a member of Preston Mennonite Church and also attended the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. She was a retired school teacher and taught in Hespeler, Georgetown and New Guinea. The family will receive friends, at Preston Mennonite Church, 791 Concession Road, Cambridge, on Friday, October 1, 1999, from 2: 30 p.m., until service time at 3: 30 p.m. Complete funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Amzie Brubacher and Rev. Ralph Westendorp. Interment in Hagey Cemetery, Cambridge.

Orpha Lucille Kinzie, passed away peacefully, with family by her side on Thursday, April 6, 2017, at the age of 96. Born and raised in Waterloo Township, Orpha spent her childhood growing up on the family's dairy farm, where she learned the value of hard work. She was an award-winning published poet and worked for many years at Dare Foods. She also enjoyed gardening and reading books. Always caring and considerate, Orpha loved to look after others and spend time with her family and friends. Mary Viola Dettweiler was born March 3, 1921 near Breslau, Ontario to Isaiah and Lucinda (Bechtel) Dettweiler. She was the second oldest in a family of eight living children - four girls and four boys. Mary's parents loved the Lord and as a young girl Mary asked Jesus Christ to be her Saviour and worked for Him ever since. As a young lady, Mary trained as a nurses' assistant and worked in Ontario. She spent a year in Voluntary Service (VS) in a home for unwed mothers in Washington, DC. While home from VS, Mary was picking fruit in the same orchard as John Sayer, an Alberta farmer. He picked out a "Peach" and after a long distance courtship he suggested they start their own family tree. They were married Oct 24, 1953 and Mary moved to the Sayer home farm west of Carstairs, Alberta. She soon became known as a friendly, hospitable neighbour. John and Mary raised their three children Nancy (Johnson), Charlotte (Stace) and Melvin on the farm. John and Mary gave their children a stable and happy home. Active in their community church, West Zion Mennonite Church over the years, Mary taught Sunday School, worked with WMSC and had a open home for anyone needing a place to go. She also volunteered with the Didsbury Auxiliary and Meals on Wheels. She was always ready to offer a hand if she knew of someone in need, and many people will remember her for a kindness she gave. Mary always enjoyed gardening, growing enough for her family and to share with others. She took delight in each grandchild and has always been involved in their lives as well as faithfully praying for each one. In August 1999, John and Mary made their home in Sunrise Village, Olds. They have made many new friends and it wasn't long before Mary again shared her love with those around her through her kind words and loving gestures. She gave generously and selflessly of her time to help her family, and many people were recipients of her gardening skills. Her wit and sense of humour will be missed by all. She was a remarkable cook and entertained many guests at her table. In her earlier years she cooked meals for the needy at the House of Friendship in Kitchener.

Friends and relatives called at Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, New Hamburg until Tuesday Jan 1st, 2008 when transfer was made to East Zorra Mennonite Church, 16th Line for the funeral service at 1: 00 p.m. with Howard Bean and Earl Koch officiating. Passed away peacefully on Thursday December 26, 2013 at Fairview Mennonite Home, Cambridge.

She was born 86 years ago on December 7, 1927 in Waterloo Township, near Breslau, to Isaiah and Lucinda (Bechtel) Dettweiler. She was the sixth born in a family of nine, eight of whom reached adulthood.

She attended Riverbank School until grade 8 when it was the expectation that she would end her schooling to help at home. A time of illness at age 15 changed things. Norma had already determined that teaching was her calling. When Rockway Mennonite Collegiate opened in 1945 Norma was allowed to pursue her secondary school education. She graduated from grade 12 with the first graduating class at Rockway Mennonite Collegiate, grade 13 at Preston High School and then attended Stratford Normal School, graduating as a teacher in 1951. After teaching for several years, Norma completed her formal education at Goshen College in Indiana where she received her B.A. degree in 1957.

Throughout her career, "Miss Dettweiler" taught at a number of Waterloo Township schools including Victoria, Riverbank, Shantz Station, Maple Grove and Breslau. She ended her teaching career at Smithson School in Kitchener when she retired in 1985. Norma taught continuously for 34 years including a 2 year term voluntary teaching assignment in with Mennonite Mission Board in Alberta.

Norma's life also revolved around serving in her church and various organizations. She was baptized into membership at Cressman Mennonite Church (Breslau Mennonite Church) on November 26, 1939 and contributed in various capacities including Vacation Bible School, the Missions Committee, the Music and Worship Committee and Congregational Chairperson. She was the founding editor of The Branch, the congregation's newsletter. Norma enjoyed gardening and supported the House of Friendship by supplying vegetables from her large garden. She joined the Board of Directors of House of Friendship and served in the role of Secretary for 10 years. Norma was a life member of Fraser Lake Camp near Bancroft, Ontario.

Norma travelled extensively with friends and family. Many of her nieces have fond memories of time spent with her during these trips.

Norma is survived by three brothers, Harold (Margaret), Ward (Beatrice) and Clarke. Also by brother-in-in law Silvin Roth and sister-in-law Joyce Dettweiler.

She was predeceased by her parents; her sisters Margaret Good, Mary Sayer and Ruby Roth; her brothers Glenn and David. Also by her brothers-in-law Laverne Good and John Sayer and sisters-in-law Katherine Dettweiler and Ruth Dettweiler.

Norma will be remembered by her 33 nieces and nephews and their families. She will also be remembered by her Dettweiler and Bechtel cousins.

Visitation will be held at Fairview Mennonite Home in the auditorium on Monday December 30th from 2-4pm. Visitation will continue at Breslau Mennonite Church on December 31st at 10am followed by a service celebrating her life at 11am. Interment will follow in the Breslau Mennonite Church cemetery.
