HAMMER, Conrad A
WELLESLEY, Oct 28-Conrad A. Hammer, 56, Wilmot township farmer, was buried alive on his farm, two miles south of Wellesley yesterday.
Mr. Hammer was engaged in digging a five-foot ditch when the side caved in, covering him with earth to a depth from which he was unable to extricate himself. Death was due to suffocation.
Dr. Walter Glaister of Wellesley said death was accidental and no inquest would be held.
FIND BODY AT NIGHT
The accident occurred sometime between 3 and 6.20 o'clock. The body was not found, however, until about 9 o'clock last night.
About 3 o'clock Mr. Hammer instructed his son, Clifford, to drive his mother to Baden while he continued with the ditch work, replacing some tile. The work was being done in a field about a quarter of a mile from the house.
Mrs. Hammer and her son returned home about 6 o'clock. Mr. Hammer had not been particularly punctual for his meals and the delay for his return caused no immediate concern.
About 6.30 Clifford went to the ditch. In the darkness, however, he failed to see anything amiss. He saw a section of the trench had been filled in but believed his father had progressed with the work to this stage.
NEIGHBORS SUMMONED
When his search proved fruitless neighbors were called. The men visited the ditch again and by lantern light discovered the cave-in. They quickly uncovered the body. It was in a crouched position covered with about a foot of mud and clay.
It is believed Mr. Hammer had been kneeling at the side of the trench, possibly reaching for a tile, when the cave-in occurred.
Mr. Hammer, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Adam Hammer, was born in Wilmot township. He attended the Missouri Lutheran church, Wellesley.
Surviving are his wife, one son, Clifford, two daughters, Mrs. Grant Miller and Miss Doris Hammer at home, three brothers, Edward of Wilmot township, Theodore of North Easthope and David of Wellesley, two sisters, Mrs. Charles Need of Tavistock and Mrs. John Wittig, Kitchener, and one grandson.
The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon with private service at the home at 2 o'clock, followed by public service at the Wellesley Lutheran church at 2.30. Interment will take place in the adjoining cemetery.
