Mrs. Brighton's Sudden Death

Mrs. John Brighton, an aged resident of seventy-five years, was found dead in bed in her home on corner Gaukel and Charles street this morning at 8.30 o'clock, by her daughter, Mrs. Simon Erb. The old lady occupied a portion of the same house as Mr. and Mrs. Erb and Sunday evening spent an hour or two with them, apparently in good health. Bidding them good night she went to her own apartments and closed down her shutters for the last time.

Mrs. Erb noted this morning that there were no signs of her mother being up and became alarmed. She found it necessary to break into the house and there found Mrs. Brighton calmly sleeping the sleep that knows no waking.

Mrs. Brighton was born in Suffolk, England and with her husband came to Canada when both were quite young. Mr. Brighton was for a number of years teamster for the Simpson Company and had the misfortune to be killed by a horse he was attending some twenty-one years ago.

Besides Mrs. Erb, Mrs. Brighton leaves two other daughters, Mrs. John Poure and Mrs. J. P. Starnsman and one son in Berlin and four sons and four daughters in various other places. She was a very estimable lady and her death will be regretted though resulting from natural causes.

MRS. J. P. STARNAMAN

Pneumonia and influenza claimed another victim when Mrs. J. P. Staraman passed to her eternal rest at 6:30 Thursday. She was only sick a week.

The late Mrs. Starnaman was born near New Dundee, Feb. 23 1851, and was in her 68th year. She came to Kitchener when a small girl and lived here over fifty years. Her husband predeceased her six years ago.

She leaves to mourn her loss, two sons, Dr. Geo. W. Starnaman, U. S Govt. Meat Inspector, Toronto, and W. A. Starnaman of the Picture store city, three sisters Mrs. J. Pour, London, Mrs. T. Battler, Wilmot Centre, and Mrs. C. A. Erb, city and two brothers Chas. Brighton, Galt and Geo. Brighton, city, also remain.

The funeral of the late Mrs. J. P. Starnaman was held on Saturday from the residence, 8? Willow St. A short service was conducted at the house by Rev. W. Parker of the Congregational Church, after which interment took place at Mount Hope Cemetery. The pall bearers were Charles and George Brighton, ...

George Brighton, 80, of 18 Maurice St., died last night at St. Mary's Hospital. He was born Feb. 2, 1866, in Conestogo. Deceased was a member of St. John's Anglican Church. His wife, the former Lena Schrader,

Motor Manslaughter Charge Laid Against Kitchener Man

Isaac Brighton, 71, Dies After Being Struck by Car on King St.

John Hesch, 27, of 59 Brunswick Ave., has been charged with motor manslaughter as the result of a fatal accident Saturday at the corner of King and Cedar Streets, city police said today. He will appear in court Oct. 20.

Isaac Brighton, 71, of 54 Elgin St., died Saturday night in K-W Hospital from injuries sustained when he was struck or walked into the Hesch vehicle.

The mishap was one of two fatal accidents in Waterloo County over the weekend. In the other, Gordon Murphy, 22, of Galt, was almost instantly killed when thrown from his motorcycle on highway No. 8 east of Galt.

Police said Brighton stepped from the south curb on King St. before being hit. He was unconscious and was removed to hospital with severe head injuries and abrasions.

Police said the Kitchener man King St., and was hit by or walked into an eastbound auto driven by John Hesch, 27, of 59 Brunswick Ave. He was unconscious and was removed to K-W Hospital with severe head injuries and abrasions.

Native of Pine Hill

Mr. Brighton was born in Pine Hill, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Brighton. He farmed near Freeport for many years. He attended Alma St. United Brethren Church.

Surviving are his wife, the former Amanda Hallman whom he married 46 years ago; two sons, Delton of Kitchener and Ross of Baden; two daughters, Mrs. Howard (Effie) Becker and Mrs. William (Irene) Petzold of Kitchener; one brother, John of Grand Ledge, Mich.; two sisters, Mrs. Ellen Seese of Alto, Mich., and Mrs. Lydia Smith of Lowell, Mich.; 11 grandchildren.

The body is resting at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home where the funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. followed by a service at the Alma St. United Brethren Church at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery with Rev. Ward Woolner officiating.

Motorbike Mishap

The motorcycle mishap occurred as the rider was travelling toward Galt. Provincial Constable Keith Leavitt of the Kitchener detachment, said the motorcycle apparently went out of control. The cause of the mishap was not immediately determined. Constable Leavitt said the back chain...

Following an illness of two weeks, John Battler passed away at his home, R.R. No. 2, Kitchener, on Friday afternoon, in his 75th year. He was born in Wilmot township in 1861, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Battler.

Surviving are two sons, Weston of Kitchener and Morley at home; three brothers, Irvin, R.R. No. 2, Kitchener, Wesley of R.R. 4, Bright, and Allan of Wilmot Centre; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Meisel in Wilmot Centre, Mrs. Amos Clemens of Petoskey, Mich., Mrs. Wm. Shek of Ayr, and six grandchildren.

Born in Wilmot Centre, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Battler, she lived her entire life here. Mrs. Meisel attended the Evangelical Church. Surviving are four sons, Edmund of Bridgeport, Rufus of Preston, Ervin and Lorne at home; four daughters, Mrs. Herman Witzel of Kitchener, Mrs. W.B. Otto of South Easthope, Mrs. Charles Pauli of Wilmot Township and Miss Rose at home; three brothers, Ervin of Williamsburg, Wesley of Blenheim Township, and Allan of Wilmot Centre; two sisters, Mrs. Amos Clemens of Petoskey, Mich., and Mrs. William Sherk of Ayr. The funeral will be held at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon with services at her late residence, thence to the Evangelical church for services at 2: 30 o'clock. Burial will be made in the adjoining cemetery.

Mrs. Emma Meisel

WILMOT CENTRE.- A native of Wilmot Centre, Mrs. Emma Meisel, relict of the late Jacob Meisel, died at her home, here, Tuesday. She was in her 75th year. Deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Battler. She attended the Evangelical Church.

Allan Battler - By Record Correspondent - Baden, Oct. 23 - Allan Battler, 72, of Baden died Saturday at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Wilmot Township, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Battler, he farmed near Victoriaburg for many years. He served as a member of the Wilmot Centre Public School Board for many years and was formerly weed and herd inspector for Wilmot Township. His wife, the former Louise Schenk, died in May, 1941.

Surviving are two sons, Roy Battler of Wellesley, and Ralph of Victoriaburg; three daughters, Miss Dorothy Battler, Baden and Mrs. Gerald (Verdella) Flood and Mrs. Harlon (Reta) Oberer, both of Kitchener; two brothers, Ervin Battler, Williamsburg, and Wesley Battler, Kitchener; and two sisters, Mrs. Lydia Clemens, Petoskey, Mich., and Mrs. Etta Sherk of Bright. Five grandchildren also survive.

The funeral will be held Tuesday at 2:30 pm from his residence in Baden, with Rev. G.T.H. Wuerscher of Phillipsburg officiating.

John Thomas Underwood

The death occurred at St. Mary's Hospital at five o'clock last night of Mr. John Thomas Underwood, aged 69 years, three months, and 10 days. The deceased has been in failing health for the last two or three months. In religion the deceased was a member of Calvary Evangelical church. He was born in Wellesley Township on November 2nd, 1863. He was predeceased by his wife some seven years ago.

The late Mr. Underwood is survived by six sons, Obal of Windsor, Ira of Kitchener, Oscar of Kitchener, Harry of Waterloo, Milo, Kitchener and Lloyd of Toronto, and by one daughter, Mrs. Edwin G. Sahli, city. Two brothers, Edward Underwood and William Underwood, both of Bridgeport, and one sister, Mrs. I. Thomas, Kitchener survive.

The funeral will be held with a private service on Sunday afternoon at 2: 30 o'clock from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sahli, 65 Glasgow Street, to Calvary Evangelical Church where a public service will be held at three o'clock. Interment will be made in Woodland Cemetery. The remains will be at the Kitchener Furniture Company Funeral Home until Saturday noon after which removal will take place to the home of Mrs. Sahli, 65 Glasgow Street.

ADAM A. BRIGHTON

NEW DUNDEE, Aug. 20, Adam Alexander Brighton, a lifelong resident of this district, passed away at his home in New Dundee yesterday following an illness of three years.

Mr. Brighton was born in Kitchener on Nov. 26, 1878, son of Mrs. C. Brighton Walker and the late Aaron Brighton, and was in his 64th year. He was married to Martha Kavelman in 1906 and took up residence in New Dundee.

Mr. Brighton was a mason by trade, later being engaged in trucking for the local creamery, He was a faithful member of the St. James' Lutheran Church of this village and a regular attendant at all services as long as health permitted.

He was secretary-treasurer of the Lutheran Sunday School for 16 years and resigned owing to his impaired health. He was also a member of the New Dundee Musical Band.

He is survived by his wife, one son, Lorne, and one daughter, Mrs. Gordon Lee (Helen), both of New Dundee five grandchildren. his mother two sisters, Mrs. Allan Stager of Tavistock and Mrs. Mervin Bechtel of New Dundee, and three brothers Albert and Abner of Preston and Hymmen of Toronto.

The funeral will take place from his late residence on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock to St. James Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery. New Dundee

PRESTON, June 11 - The death of Abner Brighton, 80, occurred at the Freeport Sanatorium early today. A resident of Preston, he had been confined to the sanatorium for ten years. Born in Wilmot Township, Mr. Brighton resided in Hespeler and Toronto for short periods before taking up residence in Preston 28 years ago. He had been employed as a cabinet maker in the Canada Office and School Furniture Ltd., before taking ill. He was a member of the Evangelical Church. J. W. ERB. One of New Hamburg's favorite tonsorial artists is Mr. J. W. Erb. He runs a neat two chair shop on East and West Street, where his numerous patrons are in the habit of resorting for a really easy shave or a first class hair cut. Mr. Erb has been in New Hamburg since 1892 and is likable as a man and sound as a citizen. Being of an enterprising turn, he has established a pool room in the rear of his barber shop, which is quite popular as a recreation resort.

If there is one thing in this life that gives bountiful satisfaction to the man who has occasion to sit once or twice a week in a barber's chair it is a nice, clean, smooth shave. In this particular the writer is willing to state that Mr. Erb is one of the best among the tonsorial experts of Waterloo county, and with the exception of one or two in Waterloo, Berlin and Galt there are none that can successfully compete with him. Mr. Erb has been engaged in business here now about six years. His tonsorial parlor is in the lower flat of a two-story brick building nearly opposite the old post office. In addition to his barber shop he has a billiard and pool room in the rear. He also keeps a fine stock of the popular brands of cigars and tobaccos, and also a great variety of pipes, cigar holders, etc. He was born near Berlin and is a son of Mr. Simon Erb, now of the firm of Scherer and Erb, book and job printers of Berlin. Referring to the subject of this sketch renews pleasant memories of more than thirty years ago. It was then that the writer was an apprentice boy in the old CHRONICLE Office (presided over by the late P.E W. Moyer) and wielded the ink roller on many on occasion while Mr. Erb's father manipulated the lever of an old Washington band press. The latter, for all I know, is probably a relic among the collection of other "has beens" not in use in the Chronicle office of to-day.

John Erb

NEW HAMBURG.-New Hamburg's second oldest business in the person of John Erb, died Christmas Day. He came here 48 years ago and opened a barber shop and pool room. A year ago, following a stroke, he retired, his son taking over the business. He was born near Kitchener neary 71 years ago. Over 47 years ago he married Mary Armstrong.

Surviving are his wife, two sons, William, principal of the Kapuskasing high school, Clarence, and one daughter, Miss Eva, a notary public, at home, also one brother, George of Windsor, and four sisters, Mrs. Lillian Fly of Erie, Pa., Mrs. E. A. Richards of St. Thomas, Mrs. W. Schroeder of Kitchener and Mrs. G. Kieth of Flint, Mich., also survives.

The funeral was held Wednesday with Rev. J. B. Dengis of the Evan- gelical church and Rev. E. G. Dale of the Baptist church officiating. Burial in Riverside cemetery.

MORLEY BATTLER, RELIEF POLICE OFFICER, DIES SUDDENLY

A former Waterloo County constable for 19 years, Morley Battler, 58, of R.R. 2, Kitchener, died unexpectedly Saturday from a heart seizure suffered at his home in Williamsburg. He was also a former Elora police chief and relieved as constable in Elmira. For 13 years, he had relieved on the Elmira police force during the holiday season and at Fall Fair time. "We'll certainly miss him here," said Chief Harry Jarvis. "He was well-known around here, especially by the farm people and he was wonderful with children." Constable Battler was a familiar figure at every fall fair in the county. Born April 1, 1897, in Wilmot Township, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Battler. Surviving are his wife, the former Elfleda Becker; a son, Clifford of Williamsburg; three daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Eva) Witmer of Williamsburg, Mrs. Howard (Hazel) Knight of Birch Run, Michigan, and Mrs. John (Elaine) Wilfong of Doon. A brother, Weston, predeceased him in 1948. There are 12 grandchildren also surviving. The body rested at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home where the funeral service was conducted Tuesday at 2 pm. Rev. A. Ward Woolner, pastor of Alma Street United Brethern Church, officiated. Internment was in Woodland Cemetery.

Rufus Meisel, 52, of 60 Highland Road, passed away early this morning at St. Mary's Hospital. Mr. Meisel had not been enjoying good health for the past few weeks but death was most unexpected. A salesman for Shirk and Snider Ltd., he had carried on his usual activities yesterday and was out to dinner with friends last night. Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Meisel, he had resided in Preston 33 years before coming to Kitchener. He attended Trinity United Church.

Betty had been a resident of Lanark Place Retirement Home for the past three years. Betty was born in Wilmot township on January 16, 1915. She was predeceased by her husband. Norbert. on June 18, 1979.

Survived by her children, John and his wife Esther of Miami, Fla., Joanne and her husband Ian Pirie, Joyce Siege Jane and her husband Barry Vetero, Norbert (Buddy), all of Kitchener and Janine and her husband William Loth of Waterloo. Also survived by six grandchildren, Michael Leyes and his wife Jennifer, Matthew Leyes, Tara Chapman and her husband Joel, Michelle Lehmann and her husband Jason. Betty was the last surviving member of her family. She was predeceased by her parents, G. Wesley Battler (1959) and Ida Christner (1987) and by her brothers, Christian, Clarence, Howard, Nile and Elton Battler and by her sister, Marie Lehmann. Also predeceased by one son, Joseph, in infancy.

Betty is also survived by four sisters-in-law, Genevieve Nauman, Belle Battler. Marjorie Battler and Wilhelmina Battler.

Betty was a longtime member of St. Agnes RC Parish in Waterloo and was also a member of St. Agnes Catholic Women's League. In addition. she was a member of Knights of Columbus Retired Members in Waterloo. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be held at St Mark's Catholic Parish, 55 Driftwood Dr.. Kitchener, on Thursday. July 11.2002 at 11 a.m. Immediately following the mass, friends and relatives are invited to remain at St. Mark's for refreshments and a time to visit. Second Trial Convicts Man of 1945 Murder

Kitchener (CP) - Henry Joseph Dietrich, 45, of Kitchener has been found guilty of non-capital murder in the 1945 shooting death of taxi driver Elmer Battler.

Mr. Justice Haines of the Ontario Supreme Court sentenced Dietrich to life imprisonment but said he will recommend that Dietrich be transferred to a psychiatric hospital. It was Dietrich's second trial in connection with the death of the Kitchener taxi driver July 13, 1945. Mr. Justice Haines said that while evidence indicated that Dietrich was not insane, he had been mentally ill for a long time. Dietrich was first arrested Nov. 23, 1963, in London, Ont.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of non-capital murder on Sept. 7, 1966, but later was granted a new trial by the Ontario Court of appeal on grounds that he had pleaded guilty to the wrong charge and no jury was empaneled when the plea was taken.

Beloved husband of 56 years of Anna Elizabeth (Haas) Battler of Wellesley; dear father of Ruth Ann and her husband Bob Lymburner of Cayuga, Kenneth and his wife Jeannette Battler of Brantford, Roger and his wife Bonnie Battler of Wellesley; dear brother of Dorothy Battler, Reta and her husband Wilber Ober, both of Kitchener. Ralph was born 78 years ago on the family homestead at Shingletown and lived there until 1992, when he moved to New Dundee. He was a son of the late Allan and Louisa (Schenk) Battler. He was a member of Bethel Missionary Church, New Dundee. Ralph had served as rural mail courier for RR 2 Petersburg and New Dundee until his retirement and was a rural Kitchener-Waterloo Record carrier for a number of years.
Loving husband of Viola (Schwartz) Battler, whom he married May 12, 1945. Cherished father of Thelma and her husband Merlin Trussler of Kitchener, Maurice and his wife Christine, Bruce and his wife Marilyn, all of New Hamburg. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Robert, Bradley and Kevin Trussler, Naomi Battler, Amy, Dale, Julie and Lisa Battler; dear brother of Dorothy Battler of Kitchener, Roy and his wife Anna of Wellesley and Ralph's twin sister, Reta and her husband Wilbert Ober of Kitchener.
He was predeceased by a sister, Verdella Such and a brother, Clayton in infancy.

UNDERWOOD, Ira S. At the K-W Hospital, on Monday, Feb. 9, 1976, after a brief illness, Ira S. Underwood, of 247 Franklin St. N., formerly of Walter Street, aged 92 years.

Mr. Underwood was born near Bloomingdale, son of the late John Underwood and the former Lavina Saltzbury. A resident of the Twin City area all of his life and a member of Calvary United Church. Mr. Under- wood was a letter carrier with the Kitchener Post Office for many years.

He was predeceased by his wife, the former Margaret Strub, in April, 1951; by a daughter, Mrs. Grace Ringle in 1945 and by two sisters and four brothers. Surviving are three sons, E. J. (Buck), Route 1, Mar, W. I. (Bill), J. E. (Jack), both of Kitchener; two daughters, Marvel (Mrs. Harry Armitage), Meaford and Marguerite (Mrs. Paul Colombo), Waterloo; a brother Milo Underwood of Kitchener; 16 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; four great- great-grandchildren also survive.

Clayton Elmer Underwood played baseball for a championship team. Then his country sent him into combat.

He helped chase the enemy out of France, only to die on Nov. 11, 1918, the day the First World War ended.

Did he learn of victory before his wounds killed him? We can only speculate. But we do know this: Clayton was the last local soldier to die while the Great War still raged.

Canada conscripted him into the infantry after running out of volunteers. Thus compelled, he did his duty.

Wilfred B. Underwood - Wilfred B. Underwood, 57, of Bridgeport, died Thursday at his home after a long illness. Born in Bridgeport, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Underwood. He worked at Greb Shoes Limited for more than 30 years and then at Western Shoe Company for seven years. Illness forced his retirement in 1960. He was a member of Emmanuel Evangelical United Brethren Church, Bridgeport. Surviving are his wife, the former Miriam Maurer, whom he married in Elmira in 1928; one daughter, Mrs. Lloyd (Carol) Brett of Michawaka, Ind.; one brother, Herman of Bridgeport; one sister, Mrs. Leah Cooper of Flint, Mich.; and two grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Nellie Klem, died in 1955. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until 9: 30 a.m. Saturday, when removal will be made to Emmanuel EUB Church for service at II a.m. Burial will be in Bridgeport Memorial Cemetery. Rev. E. Russell Thomas of 400 Wellington St., N., Kitchener, died on Thursday at his home at the age of 78.

Mr. Thomas was born Nov. 3, 1891, at Bloomingdale. He was a lifelong resident of the Twin City area.

He was employed with Hogg Fuel and Supply Co. Ltd, for 35 years prior to his retirement, in 1958. He was a member of First Mennonite Church and served overseas in the First World War with the Canadian 133rd Infantry Battalion and attained the rank of sergeant.

He was predeceased by his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Thomas, and his wife, the former Clara Shantz; two sons, Edward and William and one daughter, Clara, three brothers, Harold, Warren and Arthur and one sister, Mrs. Albert (Jessie) Moser.

Surviving are five sons, Walter, Kenneth and Grant, all of Kitchener and Milton and Russell, both of Ayr; three daughters, Mrs. John (Lillian) Neilly of Kitchener, Mrs. Edward (Barbara) Giilck of Conestogo and Mrs. Harry (Mary Lou) Falkenstern of Waterloo; two sisters, Mrs. Albert (Jane) Gies of New Dundee and Mrs. Agnes Livoch of Detroit, 23 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The former Clarice Stager was born March 25, 1897, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Allan Stager. She lived in this district most of her life.

Surviving besides her husband, are three sons, Lester in Ohio, Irvin of Kitchener and Howard of RR 1, New Hamburg; three daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Lillian) Bean of RR 1, New Dundee, Mrs. Michael (Vera) Miller of Kitchener and Elsie Cressman of Tanzania in Africa; one brother, Arden of Kitchener; two sisters, Mrs. Norman (Verne) Duench and Inez Stager of Kitchener; 24 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Cressman was predeceased by her first husband, Amos Cressman, one stepdaughter and one brother.

The body will be at the Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home noon, Saturday, until noon, Monday, when removal will be made to the Conservative Mennonite Church for services at 3 p.m. with Rev Elmer Grove officiating. Burial will be in Biehn Mennonite cemetery in Wilmot Township.
