Ulysse Pequegnat, an accomplished watch and clockmaker of Loveresse, Switzerland, procured clock parts from Swiss manufactures and assembled them in his home with the assistance of some of his eight sons. There were also six daughters. At the suggestion of his third eldest son, Pequegnat immigrated to Canada, arriving in Berlin in 1874. It was inevitable that the family should continue in the watch and clock business, and Arthur, the eldest son, started the first clock manufacturing plant in Canada, A The Arthur Pequegnat Clock Company. Pequegnat started a store of his own and the sons opened clock, watch and jewelry stores in Guelph, Stratford, Brantford, Waterloo, New Hamburg, Tavistock and Neustadt. The second and third generations of Pequegnats branched out from clock and watch making to various other fields of endeavor - the ministry, insurance, banking, industry, medicine and dentistry

Edmund von Erlach died in Berlin of nervous fever at age of 23 years, 8 months and 1 day. He came here several years ago from Switzerland, attended high school for a time, in order to learn English, and when he was unable to find an occupation that corresponded to his knowledge, he did ordinary labour. Last fall and winter, he cared for people sick with fever, until he was taken ill with the sickness himself and was laid low with it in the home of Mr. Pequegnat, where he was cared for like a member of the family.

Pequegnat Bros., Watchmakers and Jewellers, Berlin and Waterloo - The inhabitants of Berlin are well supplied not only with the necessaries but also the luxuries and adornments of life, and there can be no excuse for going out of town to make purchases, when the merchants here keep such excellent stocks, and sell the lowest possible prices. Among those engaged in the watchmaking and jewellery business must be mentioned Messrs. Pequegnat Bros., whose establishment is located on King St. East. This business has been established for over 11 years and since its inception has met with very favourable success, the development being very gratifying. The premises occupied are 11x50 feet, with a very nice stock of watches, clocks, chains, rings, brooches, scarf pins, and such other articles in this line as are usually to be found in a first-class jewellery establishment. The firm also make a speciality of watch repairing, of which they do a great deal. They give employment to three competent and skilled assistants, and their trade extends throughout the town and country. They also do a large jobbing trade, and give their customers the benefit of the lowest market prices, thus ensuring a continuance of their custom. Messrs. Pequegnat Bros. started with almost nothing, but by perseverance, thrift, enterprise and ability, have built up an excellent business; not only this, but they have started seven other parties in different places, who are now doing well. They have also another store of their own located in Waterloo, which is a branch of the Berlin house. Messrs. Pequegnat Bros. are natives of Switzerland, the land that produced William Tell. They are wide-awake business men, and have the esteem of the community in which they reside. They have been in this country over 13 years.

During the seventies a man and wife arrived in Berlin from Switzerland. Fourteen children walked with them from the station to the Town Hall to see the Mayor. The man carried over his shoulder a rifle, prepared to defend himself against wild beasts. He had less than $100 in his pocket that securely tied to his clothes but he had courage and a family to support. A watchmaker in his native land, he opened a small shop in the town. One by one his sons passed through the Canadian testing school, and shortly not only Berlin but also Guelph, Stratford and Brantford came to know the Pequegnats. One of the sons started Ontrio's first clock factory, and while conducting it served for 20 years on Berlin's and Kitchener's Board of Education.

Had present regulations, with regard to the admission of immigrants, been in force in the seventies the Pequgnats would have been shipped back to their native land branded as "undesirables." Such an act would. in addition to the loss of services named, have blocked the way of one Pequegnat to the post of actuary for one of this country's noted life insurance companies.

DEATH OF A. U. PEQUEGNAT - Following an illness of two weeks, one of Kitchener's best known and most public-spirited citizens passed away on Thursday last, august 11th, in the person of Arthur U. Pequegnat, for over fifty years a resident of the city. During that period he was prominently identified with the business interests of the city as a jeweler and as a bicycle and clock manufacturer while he was also active in civic circles. He had been in failing health for a year and a half. He was in his 76th year. Born in Chaux-de-fonds, Switzerland, Sept. 22nd, 1851, he came to Canada in 1874, being accompanied to this country by his wife whom he married in 1872, as well as his parents, brothers and sisters, and they settled in Kitchener. Surviving him are his three sons, Edmond, Marcel and Eugene, all of Kitchener, and two daughters, Mrs. B.C. Schulte, of Kitchener, and Miss Ida Pequegnat, at home. His wife passed away in 1919, while two daughters, Mrs. F.H. Boehmer, Miss Leda Pequegnat and two infant children predeceased him. There also survive five brothers, George and Philemon of Kitchener, Albert of Brantford, Joseph of Guelph, and Leon G. of New Hamburg, and five sisters, Mrs. Emma Heimbach of Colville, Wash., Mrs. Ralph Chamberlain of Calgary, Mrs. Lena Fleischer of Hamilton, and Mrs. Schneider and Mrs. B.J. Stumpf of Kitchener. The funeral, which was largely attended, was held on Saturday afternoon to the Benton Street Baptist Church for service thence to Mont Hope Cemetery.

Arthur Pequegnat Clock Company

Arthur Pequegnat came from Switzerland to Berlin, Ontario ca. 1874 with his brothers, sisters and parents. In the 1880s he was importing watches for sale locally in western Ontario. Around 1897 Arthur built a factory in Berlin to manufacture ... bicycles! When that market started to decline, he began in 1904 to convert part of his factory over to making clock movements. Initially his clock cases were produced in local furniture factories, typically with quarter-cut oak but occasionally with mahogany or walnut. Later he set up his own small factory for case production in nearby Breslau.

The town name was changed from Berlin to Kitchener in 1916. After Arthur died in 1927, relatives continued to operate the company until 1941. At that time the shortage of brass, a key component of the clock movements and other parts, forced the business to shut down.

A whole book has been devoted to the history of this top-of-the-list, one-hundred-percent Canadian manufacturer of clocks. Six original company catalogues were found during research for the book, but no company production records were ever discovered. Approximately sixty-five catalogued models of mantel clock are known, as well as sixteen models of wall clock (with variations) and seven models of grandfather (hall) clock. The Pequegnat company also sold several "clock kits" for various sizes of clocks over the years - everything one needed except for the case.

Few citizens are more esteemed more for their qualities of head and heart than Mr. L. G. Pequegnat. He is one of New Hamburg's best known business men, having been in the jewellry business for 20 years. Some years ago he retired from this business and entered the Pequegnat Clock Co. of Berlin, for whom he has since travelled. He is a successful salesman. Mr. Pequegnat has nearly always held public office of some kind. After a long term on the Public School Board he entered the Municipal Council, holding the position of Reeve for two years. He is now again on the School Board.

LEON G. PEQUEGNAT, VICE-PRESIDENT BERLIN AND RACYCLE CO.

Mr. Leon G. Pequegnat of New Hamburg, is a Berlin Old Boy, whose life record has been a successful and honorable one. He belongs to a highly respected Berlin family, and spent his early years in the town. In 1882 he removed to Hamburg, where he conducted a jewelry store for many years. His business qualities were recognized by his fellow-citizens and he was first elected to the School Board and later a member of the Municipal Council, his public services terminating after capably filling for two years the position of reeve of that enterprising town. Mr. Pequegnat for six years, held the office of President of the Ontario Poultry Association and during his incumbency of the office, Hamburg had one of the best Poultry Associations in Canada. Mr. Pequegnat is Vice-President of the Berlin and Racycle Co., and at present is head salesman of the Arthur Pequegnat Clock Co., of Berlin. Such men as he are a credit to any community.

L. G. Pequegnat Dies At Hamburg

New Hamburg - Reeve of New Hamburg for many years and a member of village council, Leon G. Pequegnat passed away at his residence here, late Wednesday night. Deceased, who was in his 81st year, had been a resident of New Hamburg since 1881. He had been in ill health for about a year.

Mr. Pequegnat operated a jewellery store and watch-making establishment here until recently. Mr. Pequegnat was born in Switzerland.

Mr. Pequegnat served for 40 years as a member of the Wilmot Agricultural Society and for 20 years on the New Hamburg school board. He was a prominent exhibitor and judge of poultry and a well-known singer, in this district.

His wife predeceased him several years ago. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Roy Eby, of Detroit and two grandchildren. One adopted daughter, Mrs. Isaac Lightheart, of New Hamburg also survives.

The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon from Baptist Church, to Riverside cemetery, for Interment.

DEATH OF MISS PEQUEGNAT

The death of Miss Martha Pequegnat, daughter of the late Ulysse Pequegnat and sister of Messrs Arthur, Paul, George and Philemon Pequegnat of this town, occurred on Wednesday evening, after an illness over a year, which was borne by the deceased with that patience and endurance becoming of the christian character possessed by Miss Pequegnat. The deceased was in her 39th year and was unmarried, and has been living with and caring for her aged mother ever since she could be of assistance to her. The death of Miss Pequegnat will be a sore blow to the bereaved mother and family, and the sympathy of the whole community will be extended to them in the hour of their bereavement.

The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon from her mother's residence on Duke street to the German Baptist church, thence to the Mount Hope cemetery.

Watch of Boy Killed in War Returned to Father After 16 Years

A poignant war echo of 16 years ago was heard in Kitchener by a father who gave his son to the allied cause. Sixteen years ago Emanuel Pequegnat enlisted, being one of the first 18 to go from Kitchener. When he left his father gave him a watch engraved, "From Father to Mannie." The young lad must have had a presentiment of death for before one of the first big engagements in which his battalion participated he gave the watch to a friend, asking that in the event he did not return, it be returned to his father. "Mannie" went over the top and fell a victim in no man's land.

The Pequegnat Clock Company received a letter from R.C. Spindlove of North Edmonton, Alta., in which the story was revealed to the Pequegnat family for the first time.

In the letter Mr. Spindlove says: "It always has been my aim to find his parents and return to them the watch he gave me before going into battle. All I knew was that his father was a watchmaker in the East and ever since the war I have been trying to locate him.

Past president and chancellor of the Ontario Bible College, the Ontario Theological Seminary and former pastor of Calvary Church, Pape Avenue, Toronto, at Toronto East General Hospital, on Saturday, May 18, 1991. Rev. Stewart L. Boehmer, beloved husband of Evelyn (Bender) Boehmer; dear father and father-in-law of Dr. Fred and his wife Vida Boehmer of Brandon, Fla. and Jim and his wife Faye Boehmer of Unionville. Lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his many friends. Private funeral services were held on Tuesday. Pequegnat - Suddenly, following a heart attack, while visiting his summer home near Waubashene, Ont., on Friday, Jan. 21, 1972, Dr. Homer Marcel Pequegnat, of 161 Norman St., Waterloo, age 65 years (practicing physician and surgeon in the Twin Cities for the past 38 years). A member of Benton Street Baptist Church and the Waterloo County Medical Association; formerly a member of the medical staff at the Freeport Hospital.

A son of the late Edmund Pequegnat and the former Emma Franz; step-son of Mrs. Gladys Pequegnat of Kitchener; husband of Iona R. Clapp; father of Homer E., Route 1, Preston; Paul E., Manotick, Ont., and Dr. E. Peter of Tucson, Ariz.; brother of Leda (Mrs. Robert S. Wilson), Ayr; J. Marc Pequegnat of Hamilton, and the late Carl E. Pequegnat; 13 grandchildren also survive.

Friends may call at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. West, Kitchener. Funeral service in the chapel Tuesday at 2 pm conducted by Rev. W.A. McNeill. Interment Mount Hope Cemetery.

Susan Pequegnat emailed that she recalls well the "shiny brass stairway railing, the grey-white marble floors and the wonderful wooden office doorways" of the old city hall, which she regularly visited as a child in the 1950s.

Her father, Robert K. Pequegnat, was head of the city water commission, which had a first-floor office behind the stairway.

"On many a Saturday morning, my family would head to the Kitchener Farmers' Market, located directly behind city hall. As Mom shopped, my Dad would take my sister and I up to his office.

"There he would catch up on paperwork while we borrowed two of the wooden wheeled steno chairs from the office. We would roll and twirl our way around the empty lobby space, having races or spinning in circles until we were too dizzy to stand up straight."

Peacefully at her home in Waterloo. Jean was 94 years old.

Predeceased by her husband Dr. Bill Shantz, parents Marjorie (Stumpf) and Steele Mackenzie, and sisters Mary Joan Stearn and Janet Ollerenshaw. Survived by sons Alexander (Gail), Ian (Sheila) and Cameron (Mary). Grandmother of Steele, Ciaran, Keltie, and Jessica. Great Grandmother of Kora Lynn, Kinsley, Logan, and Quin.

Jean was an active member of Knox Presbyterian Church in Waterloo and a retired elder for the church.

She was also very musically inclined, singing in the church choir as well as the KW Philharmonic Choir and the Gilbert and Sullivan Society.

A private family committal service has taken place at Mannheim Mennonite Cemetery. A memorial service to celebrate Jean's Life in Christ will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, at a future date.
