    Hallman Meeting House

It is not known just when the first log meeting house of the Hallman congregation was built. However, on June 1, 1847 a one-acre plot of land, for a meeting house and burial ground, was deeded from Adam Unger to trustee, Jacob H. Detweiler. This land was east of Roseville on the northwest corner of Lot 31, Concession 11 of North Dumfries Township, and on the south side of the Blenheim or Roseville Road, which was built westerly from Galt. A stone cairn made up of old tombstones stands on this property today.

A new brick church, called Hallman Mennonite Church, was constructed in 1854 (Burkholder 1935: 104) or 1856 (Taylor 1970: 282) on land on the north side of the road, just west of the old meeting house. The congregation is reported to have disbanded in 1891. The property was sold soon after.

Death of Adam Unger, Esq. \endash One after another the old settlers of our county are passing away. On Saturday evening, August 17th, inst., there passed away this well-known and highly respected resident of Waterloo County at the residence of his son, Mr. Moses Unger, Blair. Mr. Unger, sr., had been ill for some months, suffering from the disease known as dropsy, and his death at the advanced age of eighty-eight and a half years was not unexpected by his large circle of friends.

Deceased was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, February 7th, 1801, emigrated to Canada in 1812, and in the year 1824 was married to Margaret Hallman.

After their marriage they settled on the farm now occupied by Mr. Noah Bricker, near Roseville, and here carved out for themselves a comfortable home.

In the year 1862 Mr. Unger retired from the farm, moved about a mile near Galt, where he resided a few years, after which he removed to Roseville until the death of Mrs. Unger in the year 1884, when he came to spend the evening of his life with his son, Mr. Moses Unger, at Blair.

Deceased was much respected by all with whom he became acquainted, being of a retiring disposition and a consistent member of the Mennonite Church.

The funeral on Tuesday was largely attended by people who came from far and near to pay the last tribute of respect to their old and esteemed friend.

His family consisted of seven children, of whom six are yet living, viz.: - Mr. John Unger, Waterloo; Mr. Benjamin Unger, Berlin; Mr. Moses Unger, Blair; Mrs. Wendell Clemens, Michigan; Mrs. Martin Grimm, near Milverton, and Mrs. Jacob Bricker, near Roseville. A worthy life ended full of years and enjoying the love of his relatives and esteem of his friends.

    A SENSATIONAL SHOOTING MATCH.

An old familiar character in the neighborhood was the late Adam Unger, whom Providence evidently never intended should die an unnatural death. It is said by old citizens that he would frequently be seen walking barefooted through the hot ashes of the clearing apparently as unconcerned as if he were walking upon Brussels carpet. One day Adam bad a miraculously close call from lightning. On this occasion he and his hired man were logging when a thunder shower came up and they sought shelter between two logs. A flash of the electric current instantly killed the hired man, but Mr. Unger was unharmed. The hired man very profane person, and on was a very occasions previous to this in fits of anger would invoke the Almighty to strike him dead. Providence moves in a mysterious way, indeed, and the fact that Unger escaped unharmed leads one, not even superstitiously inclined, to believe that it was an act of Him who controls the elements to satisfy a wish of one of his creatures. The sad occurrence created quite a sensational morsel of news all over the country.

At another time Providence seems to have interfered in behalf of Unger. One day many years ago a shooting match was in progress at the old tavern now occupied by Mr. Knechtel, the weaver, and the contestants were shooting at a target down the road in the direction of Mr. John Perrin's lane. Unger and his wife drove by in sleigh and when they had reached a hundred yards or so distant from the shooters he felt a sudden sting in one of his heels. On examination when he arrived home revealed a wound which plainly told that the heel had received a rifle bullet, the result of careless marksmanship. All efforts to extract the bullet proved useless, and for many years prior to his death he was to a certain extent troubled by the leaden messenger which he carried with him to his grave.

    THE LAST ROLL CALL

Death of Israel D. Bowman, County Clerk, and A. LaCourse, Senior Judge of the County. Benjamin Unger, an Old and Well Known Resident of the County Also Answers to the Summons of the Grim Reaper.

The past week has been eventful in the number of deaths of prominent persons in the County, including the County Clerk and Senior Judge.

    BENJAMIN UNGER.

Mr. Benjamin Unger, one of the oldest native-born residents of the County passed quietly away on Sunday, August 30th, at Galt. Deceased had been ill for some time past and of late his demise had been hourly expected. He was a man who has had a varied experience during his career. Born on a farm near Roseville, he received a good education, and when about twenty years of age he came to Galt and started out in life with Messrs. Forbes in the dry goods business. He afterwards bought out an interest in the Golden Lion dry goods store and then went to Guelph and engaged in the grocery and dry goods business. He also went into the auctioneering business. After giving this up he journeyed to California, where he operated a flour mill, and from thence he went to Australia. Upon his return to Canada he engaged in business in many towns, among them being Berlin, Paris, Coburg, Listowel, St. Thomas, Pt. Elgin, Alviston and Doon. In Berlin he remained nine years in the brokerage and private banking business. Some few years ago he returned to Galt and engaged in the real estate business until during the last winter, when he was appointed to the staff of excise officers by the Dominion government. Since that time he has been gradually failing until Sunday, when the angel of death called him to his eternal home. At one time a wealthy man, he died comparatively poor. He was twice married, his second wife, a daughter of Mr. Gustave Ante, surviving him. He leaves four children, all by his second wife, two boys and two girls, Adam, Reginald, Gwendoline and Camilla. He also leaves two brothers and three sisters, John, in Berlin, Moses Clemens, Michigan. Deceased was an honorable, trustworthy man, respected by all who knew him. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon to the R.C. cemetery. Galt Reporter.

INJURIES CAUSED BY AUTO FATAL TO 88 YEAR OLD MAN

Moses Unger Succumbs Few Hours After Being Struck By Motor Car; Driver Absolved Of Blame

Moses Unger, 134 Church street, died last evening at his home on Church street of injuries and shock received when he was struck down at 2.40 yesterday afternoon on King street by a car driven by Roy Burns, 4 Grand street, Guelph. The deceased was in his 85th year. Mr. Unger's eyesight was poor and he was proceeding across King street near Norton's store when the accident occurred. The car was travelling along King street towards Galt when the aged man was struck. Eye witnesses of the accident state that the driver of the car was not to blame for the accident as he was driving very slowly when he hit Unger. The unfortunate man apparently did not see the approaching machine and stepped directly into its path. He sustained a bad gash on the forehead and other bruises and a bad shaking up. His advanced years and the injuries sustained are said to have caused his death. It is not likely that the driver of the death dealing car will be held and an inquest is unlikely. Following the accident Dr. A. Oaks attended the injured man. The late Mr. Unger has lived in Preston for many years and was a well known figure. He was one of the town's oldest men and easily recalled many early happenings of the district with great vividness. He had been living retired for many years at his home on Church street with his wife, who is now 86 years of age. At one time he was the government fruit inspector here. He is survived by his wife and two sons, John Unger, of Plum Coulee, Man. and Joseph Unger, of California: also ten daughters, Mrs. Ellen Rickert, at Kitchener; Mrs. Aaron Hilborn, of Galt; Mrs. C. G. Ott and Mrs. Hannah Rickert, of Buffalo; Mrs. W. Hurst, of Winnipeg: Mrs, H. R. James, of Vancouver; Mrs. W. Ford, Beattie, Wash.; Mrs. James Thomas, of Preston; Miss V. Unger, Toronto and Mrs. T. F. Wilkins, Chesley. The funeral will be held at 3.30 Thursday afternoon from the United church and interment will take place in the Hagey cemetery.

Roseville United Brethren in Christ Church

Although early meetings are reported to have begun in the Roseville area as early as 1860, it was not until 1881 that Rev. George Backus of New Dundee came to the area to conduct regular services in Roseville homes on Sunday evenings. The first services were held in the home of Mrs. Jacob Bricker; there were seven charter members in the group. Shortly after this time, c.1884, the present church building, which was originally of frame and dates to 1852 when it belonged to a Lutheran Congregation, was bought from the Wesleyan Methodists who had acquired it earlier from the Lutherans. The first United Brethren in Christ pastors after Rev. Backus were Revs. David B. Sherk and Jacob. B. Bowman. The congregation remained on a circuit until 1969 when the connection ended with New Dundee and Roseville became independent. A parsonage was purchased in 1971 and on September 9, 1973 a sod-breaking ceremony was held for the Christian Education addition. Dedication services were held on October 6, 1974.
A split in the United Brethren in Christ in 1889 resulted in two groups calling themselves by that name. One group joined the Congregationals in 1906. The other group remained United Brethren in Christ until November 16, 1946 when most congregations of the United Brethen in Christ organization joined with the Evangelical Church to form the Evangelical United Brethren Church - later to join with the United Church on January 1, 1968. This congregation is one of three United Brethren in Christ Churches in Waterloo County today. The others are Stanley Park in Kitchener, and New Dundee. The headquarters of the church is in Huntington, Indiana.
Although the building was originally of frame construction, remodelling and renovations have resulted in the church building of today.

The Demise of Mr. B. U. Clemens

WIDELY KNOWN CITIZEN CALLED TO GREAT BEYOND.

The community today mourns the loss of a widely known citizen, namely Mr. Benjamin U. Clemens, who passed away at four o'clock yesterday afternoon after a protracted illness.

Mr. Clemens had been confined to his home since New Years, the first affliction being pneumonia. When on the road to complete recovery la grippe set in and during the past three weeks he had been confined to his home. About a week ago the illness assumed a serious aspect from which there was to be no rally.

The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Clemens of North Dumfries, where the subject of this sketch was born. His mother, Catherine Unger, predeceased him only a few months ago at the advanced age of eighty-eight years. The late Mr. Clemens was in his sixty-ninth year. His early life was spent on the farm. Subsequently he with his brother, Mr. John U. Clemens, conducted a general store at New Dundee. But for the past forty years he has practically been a resident of this city continuously. For the past thirteen years he was on the staff of the Merchants Rubber Co., where his services were highly valued. During his long residence here he made many warm friends. His geniality, sociality and personality in general made his association and companionship a delight. Mr. Clemens also was a member of Trinity Methodist Church.

In 1873 he was married to Marian Bricker who with one daughter, Mrs. Fred Scandrett, and one grandson. Frederick John Scandrett, of Montreal, survive him. The following also survive:

Eight brothers and two sisters namely, Mrs. Oliver Berger of New Dundee: Joseph Clemens, city; Nathaniel, New Dundee: Moses, Marlett Mich.; Wendell of Breslau; Henry U of city: James, Brown City, Mich. John of Galt: Allen of Brown City Mich.; Mrs. Lewis Block of Pontiac

Death of J.U. Clemens - The news was received here with deep regret that Mr. J. U. Clemens had pasted away early yesterday morning at his home, 15 Margaret Ave., Kitchener. Mr. Clemens had been in poor health for some time, but was able to continue his business here up to a week ago Saturday. Leaving here he took to his bed and although seriously ill hopes were at first entertained for his recovery. Dropsy and heart failure were the immediate cause of his death, but a severe attack of influenza and pneumonia two years ago had greatly undermined his health. The late Mr. Clemens was born near Blair in February 1850 and was in his 71st year. He conducted a general store business in New Dundee for about ten or twelve years, after which he removed to Kitchener where he bought out C. Kranz & Co. About sixteen years ago he opened a general store in New Hamburg which he conducted successfully up to time of his death. Deceased was a valued member of Trinity Methodist Church, Kitchener, and in politics a staunch Liberal. He was well and favorably known throughout this district and was highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends. Highrise development on track on Duke Street West in downtown Kitchener

    By Liz MonteiroRecord Reporter

KITCHENER - Another highrise apartment building in the downtown core appears to be on track.

The 21-storey, L-shaped residential highrise at 45 Duke St. W. will feature 137 units. On the site near Ontario Street North is a former residential building turned pub \emdash Jack Burger \emdash which is set to be demolished.

At a committee meeting on Tuesday, minor changes to the site plan were approved. In the report, city staff said the highrise development meets the city's official plan when it comes to intensification in the core area.

The building will have a total of 63 parking spaces and 45 bicycle parking spaces. It is located on the Ion corridor.

A heritage impact assessment was submitted and no concerns were issued by city heritage staff, the report said.

Committee chair Denny Cybalski said neighbouring property owners were made aware of the development and the committee was not notified of any potential concerns.

City senior planner Juliane von Westerholt said the next step is getting full site approval and a building permit.

    J. U. CLEMENS.

To the farmers of the surrounding district and even in the town itself, the name of Mr. J. U. Clemens was well known long before he opened out in New Hamburg five years ago. For Mr. Clemens had been in business as a general merchant in New Dundee for many years, subsequently going to Berlin. He is a gentleman with an honorable and successful business record to his credit and enjoys a good share of public confidence in and about New Hamburg. He does a general dry goods trade but makes it a Point to have something special before the public most of the time. To this end he handles much bankrupt stock and, as these are always first class goods, his patrons get genuine and very substantial bargains handed out very frequently. Especially in shoes and ready-made clothing, of which he carries a large stock, is this true. His stock of gents furnishings is complete and up to the minute at all times. But it is in ladies' high-class shirt waists that this store specializes. Mr. Clemens is proud of his offerings in this line and truly his selection is a splendid one. Ladies of the vicinity cannot make a mistake in looking through this store for a natty, stylish shirt waist.

    Notes:

    Justice Carlton William Clement
    (1907-1999)

Practicing law was a Clement family tradition, and even though Justice Carlton Clement's father was a businessman, Justice Carlton Clement was well supported in his pursuit of a career in law, a career in which he committed himself to practicing for over 60 years.

Justice Carlton William Clement was born in Waterloo, Ontario in 1907. The family moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1913 and Justice Clement attended St. John's College, and later enrolled at the University of Manitoba. He spent two years enrolled in sciences until the family moved to Edmonton, Alberta in 1925. He then enrolled at the University of Alberta, changing his discipline to arts. He received his law degree in 1928 and a bachelor of laws in 1931.

Almost immediately after spending years as a student, Justice Clement was admitted to the Alberta bar on April 12, 1932. At this time, in the heart of the depression, Justice Clement went to Peace River and practiced law for two years. The humble beginnings of trading law services for food and other necessities shaped Justice Clement's practice.

Justice Clement arrived back in Edmonton and became a senior partner at the firm of Clement, Parlee, Irving, Mustard and Rodney. In 1942, Justice Clement also lectured insurance law at the University of Alberta for three consecutive years. In addition to his teaching responsibilities during 1942, he was also appointed to King's Counsel and in 1970, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Alberta.

By 1970, Justice Clement had been practicing law for 38 years. In 1959, he served as president of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce and in 1968 he served as president of the Alberta Law Society.

He was also president of the Edmonton bar Association, director of the Alberta Chamber of Mines, director of the Bohemian Maid Brewing Company, and he served on the advisory board of the National Trust. Justice Clement was also instrumental in the selection of Canada's first ombudsman.

Justice Carlton William Clement retired from the Court of Appeal in 1982 but continued to serve as a deputy judge with the Federal Court of Appeals. He lectured again at the University of Alberta in 1983 for three consecutive years when he was appointed as lecturer in professional responsibility. He officially retired from the practiced of law on May 31, 1994. He passed away on December 27, 1999.

    Retiring judge decries 'deteriorating values'

    By DOUG SWANSON

Justice Carlton Clement leaned back in his leather chair, puffed on his slender cigar and reflected on his 12 years as a member of Alberta's highest court.

"There are many things I'm leaving behind that are pleasant and interesting," said the most recent retiree from the Alberta Court of Appeal.

"My associates are a great group of lawyers."

Justice Clement, who turned 75 on Jan. 6, has hung up his robes and will now be able to spend more time at his cabin at Kapasiwin Beach.

Justice Clement launched his distinguished legal career in 1932 when he was admitted to the Alberta bar.

"Those were very difficult days during the Depression. Some lawyers were even on the bread line."

Justice Clement survived and later joined Parlee and Company, a law firm for which he would eventually become senior partner.

Between his bar admission and his appointment to the then appellate division of the Alberta Supreme Court in 1970, Justice Clement was a busy man.

He served as president of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, was a director of the Alberta Chamber of Mines and a director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

Justice Clement served on the advisory board of National Trust and was a director of Bohemian Maid Brewing Co. Ltd.

During his 38-year career as a practising lawyer, Justice Clement was elected president of the Alberta Law Society and the Edmonton Bar Association. He was appointed a King's Counsel in 1942.

He also headed a provincial study into boards and tribunals which resulted in the creation of an ombudsman for Alberta.

Justice Clement said the primary function of the ombuds- man was to investigate areas of complaint where "the court has no jurisdiction and try to see that justice is done."

His appointment directly to the appeal court, bypassing the trial division, didn't hamper his effectiveness.

"I'd been through enough trials as a barrister so as not to feel any lack of experience in that regard."

Justice Clement admits that at the time, if given a choice, he would have selected the trial division but in retrospect is glad he served on the appeal court.

"It made a very interesting and stimulating change from the actual practice of law." he said.

Increasingly complex laws and Alberta's rising crime rate have put added pressure on the appeal court.
"The volume of work in the court of appeal is so great we need all the help we can get."

Justice Clement says deteriorating values in society are contributing to a higher crime rate.

"If young people don't develop a decent standard of morality, it's going to be difficult."

Chief Justice William McGil- livray of the Alberta Court of Appeal says Justice Clement will be sorely missed.

"He was a most powerful, co- operative judge," says Justice McGillivray.

"He had a lovely turn of phrase. We all will miss him, not only as a judge but a friend.

    Notes:

Measuring Wool for City Knitters Is a Big Chore

Hundreds and hundreds of pounds of wool have passed through Miss Millicent Clemens' hands at the Kitchener Red Cross headquarters in past months and, as long as the war continues, there will be no slackening in her work.

It is Miss Clemens' job to keep Kitchener Red Cross knitters supplied with wool to knit various articles. This she does by weighing out exactly enough yarn for each pair of -stockings, sweaters, scarf or mitts. It is then wrapped, marked and shelved, ready to be handed out to knitters.

While this may sound like a monotonous task, it really isn't, according to the wool dispenser. From her quarters at the side of the workroom, Miss Clemens sees the fruits of her work grow. In a few days her parcels come back in finished articles. ready to be forwarded to headquarters.

Miss Clemens is an important cog in the knitting department as her work conserves considerable yarn that might ordinarily go to waste. Instead of handing out two skeins of yarn to make a pair of stockings when only one skein and a portion of the second is actually needed, Miss Clemens measures out the correct amount and thus guards against waste.

When Miss Clemens first started weighing out the wool the work went slowly, as it was necessary to weigh out each individual parcel. But soon she found out just how much each skein of the various types of wool weighed, and it was only necessary to weigh or measure the half or quarter skein allotments.

Every weekday morning finds Miss Clemens at her work. She has some 1,000 knitters to keep busy and that means that she must keep on her toes.

Honor Memory of Deceased Worker With Contribution

A $5 cash donation from two Kitchener people was received at Red Cross headquarters today "in loving memory of a steadfast and loyal friend and a devoted Red Cross worker."

The donation was a tribute to the untiring efforts of the late Miss Millicent Clemens, who was buried today. Miss Clemens was an ardent Red Cross worker and died almost a year to the day after volunteering her services.

It was Miss Clemens job to parcel, weigh and label all the wool that passed out of the Red Cross headquarters. She handled wool for thousands of sweaters and socks for members of the armed forces.

A card accompanying the donation pointed out that the doners were sure Miss Clemens would rather that they gave the money to the Red Cross than buy flowers.

Other donations reported at headquarters today amounted to $18.50. Three are anonymous donations for $10, $3 and 50 cents. The other is a $5 contribution from the Misses Elsie and Miranda Master.

Bricker started in the sport of running in 1923 and during his career which ended in retirement in the mid 1930s he ran in hundreds of races across Canada and the USA. He specialized in the marathon (26 miles-385 yards) but also ran in other long distance events.

In 1927 he won the British Empire Games marathon which automatically placed him on the Canadian Olympic Games team which competed in Amsterdam in 1928 and in which race he finished tenth. In the same year, he finished third in the British Empire games held at London, Ontario.

Bricker was considered to be an extremely good scientific runner, always competing against the clock rather than against his opponents. Using this procedure he was spectacular in some of his victories.
