    Notes:

    Hunsberger, Noah S. (1877-1958)

Noah Sherk Hunsberger: pastor and rural mission worker; born 14 December 1877 in Baden, ON to Abraham and Elizabeth (Sherk) Hunsberger. He was the ninth child in a family of twelve. On 1 March 1905 he married Mary Ann (Steiner) Shantz (17 October 1881-6 February 1925). They had three children. After Mary Ann's death, he married Minnie A. (Cober) Witmer (20 June 1887-25 December 1987) on 8 September 1926. Noah and Minnie had two children. Noah died 14 March 1958, and was buried in the Erb Street Mennonite Church cemetery.

Noah and Minnie Hunsberger On 15 May 1900 Noah Hunsberger, after being chosen by lot, was ordained as a minister for the David Eby (later Waterloo, then Erb St.) congregation in Waterloo, ON. Later in life he said he had been ordained to preach in the English language at a time when the change from German to English was underway in the Mennonite Conference of Ontario. Hunsberger served as a minister at the Waterloo congregation from 1900-1920 and again from 1923-1929. From 1920-1923 he served at the Sherkston, ON congregation, and continued to serve the Rural Mission Board in a variety of locations after 1930 (e.g., Zurich, Bothwell and Baden -- in the late 1930s). He was actively engaged in pastoral work for forty years. Hunsberger also had in interest in the early work of the House of Friendship during the 1940s. By vocation he had a woodworking shop for some years and also was a beekeeper. During most of his ministry he lived in Waterloo; in later years he lived near Baden and in St. Jacobs.
Noah Hunsberger had only a grade eight education. He received limited theological training by taking some correspondence courses from the Elkhart Institute (later Goshen College) in Indiana. His lack of education likely influenced his decision to retire in his early 50s as minister of the more urban Waterloo Mennonite Church when younger leaders with more education began to be available. He was described as an "earnest and genuine" preacher, who was often moved to tears while speaking. In his last years he carried on a ministry of hospital visitation. Noah Hunsberger provided quiet leadership, often filling the pulpit in smaller rural congregations, and responding to the call of the conference to serve as an itinerant minister as needed.

    Notes:

WATERLOO, Ontario - With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Erma Kathryn (Hunsberger) Stutzman, 87, on Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at Cook Family Residence, Waterloo Regional Hospice, Waterloo, Ontario, after suffering a stroke.

Born at home on Donel Farm near Baden, Ontario, she was the third daughter of Eldon and Mary Hunsberger and was happiest spending time with her seven siblings at home on the farm. Extended family get-togethers and connecting with aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews were a highlight for Erma and a common thread throughout her life. Education was a significant pillar in Erma's life. She attended Rockway Mennonite School in Kitchener and Teacher's College in Stratford and the friendships she made there, lasted throughout her lifetime. Erma's sense of adventure, independence and curiosity for life was admired by her nieces and nephews. It was during her time as an MCC volunteer teaching at Grenfell School in St. Anthony, Newfoundland that she sparked a friendship with Dr. John Stutzman. Erma and John were married at Conrad Grebel Chapel in 1972, 15 years after they met and then created a life together in Bloomington, IL. The roads between Waterloo and Bloomington, Siesta Key and Rainbow Rock were well-travelled by family who loved spending time with Aunt Erma and Uncle John. In December 2018, Erma and John moved back to Waterloo to be close to family. Erma's adored husband John passed away August 2019 and last summer Erma moved to Parkwood Mennonite Homes so that she could live close to her beloved sister, Mary.

Erma is survived by sisters, Elsie and her husband, Glen Shantz and Mary Schiedel; brother, Ken Hunsberger and sisters-in-law Ruth Hunsberger and Catherine Hunsberger.

She is predeceased by her mother, Mary; father, Eldon; brothers: Enos, Willis and Floyd and sister, Amy.
Erma was dearly loved by: Sunny, Hannah and Sophie to whom she was always known as Auntie! While Erma and John had no children, their deep love for their nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews was evident and strong. When leaving a conversation with Aunt Erma we would often say, "Good-bye. I love you" and she would say, "Good-bye, I love you more!"

A private memorial service will be held at Waterloo North Mennonite Church on Saturday July 3, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. (Eastern time zone).
The family suggests donations to Mennonite Central Committee.

Memorial donations and condolences for the family may be arranged by contacting Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo.

Her presence is already missed by her adoring husband of almost 50 years, Wayne. Dorothy's pride and joy was being a Mom to her children Christine, Juanita Ogilvie [Brian], Roger [Sue], Randy [Chris], Tania Leis [Ryan], Charmaine Stulp [Andrew]; being Nana to her grandchildren Cameron, Sonya, Ashley, Nick, (Brooke), Rachel, (Matt), Taylor, Morgan, Brady, Bobby, (Nikki), Emmy, Mikaela and Anderson; and most recently Great-Nana to Seaton. Dear sister to Elizabeth Cressman [William Gardner].

Loved by many brothers and sisters-in-law, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Remembering those who have gone before: her first love, Raymond Lichty, her parents Clare and Mary [Brubacher], her brother Dennis Cressman, parents-in-law Lorne and Laura (Schmidt) Lichty and David and Fannie (Bender) Lichti, her sisters-in-law Doris Lichty, Elsie Lichti, Linda Lichti, Joan Miller, and brothers-in-law, Harold Lichti and Hardy Loewen.

"Live, Love, Laugh" was a motto for Dot and she carried these words out to their fullest potential. As she fought her battle with cancer, she lived with it rather than dying from it. She loved to serve others most commonly by using her culinary skills to cook incredible meals for her family and friends and by writing encouraging cards and letters. Music poured out of her as she sang, directed choirs and danced to Elvis in the living room. Dot's faith in Jesus was her Firm Foundation and Rock throughout the various trials in her life.

Family and friends are encouraged to come visit with the family, Friday, February 7 from 2-4 and 7-9 at Woodside Bible Fellowship, 200 Barnswallow Drive, Elmira. Her Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, February 8 at 2pm, also at Woodside. Dot was a vibrant woman...she has asked for bright, joyful colours to be worn rather than all black. Shine up your shoes, put on your jewellery and get ready to worship and praise her Lord! If desired, memorial donations can be made to Compassion Canada or Woodside Bible Fellowship-Church Plant. Cremation has taken place. Condolences online at www.grahamgiddyfh.com 519.888.7700.

He was a spiritual man who deeply loved River Bend, The Land NW of Olds, AB., that fed his heart and soul for many years. He volunteered generously to Telecare and Agape Hospice in Calgary, making significant contributions to many lives. He was born at the K-W Hospital in Kitchener, ON., on October 27, 1946, with his twin sister dying shortly after their birth. Dennis was a graduate of Rockway Mennonite School, Kitchener, ON; Eastern Mennonite College University, Harrisonburg, VA; and Colgate Rochester Divinity School, Rochester, NY. He served as a minister of three unique churches, founded Den's Exploration Services, and worked at Fairview Bakery in Calgary.
