    MISS LYDIA CRESSMAN

Elmira - April 8 An Elmira woman who served overseas as a war nurse with the United States Army was one of nine victims in last night's bus accident in Seattle, Wash., it was learned today.

Relatives of Miss Lydia Cressman, Reg. N., were informed by telephone early this morning that she had been killed. The bus in which Miss Cressman was riding collided with an oil truck and plunged into a shall river on the outskirts of Seattle. Born in Elmira in 1905, Miss Cressman was the daughter of David Cressman and the late Leah Martin. Her father and stepmother were informed of the tragedy about 3 a.m. by a roommate of their daughter. After graduating from the Elmira schools, Miss Cressman did some practical nursing in the district for some time. In 1927 she left for the United States and worked for a time in hospitals in Quakertown and Souderton, Pa. Five years later she went to Philadelphia where she completed her training as a nurse while jointly concluding studies which would graduate her from high school.

She attained both goals, being graduated from nursing school and high school studies in the same year. When the United States became involved in the war, Miss Cressman joined the nursing service, and was in the first convoy to leave the United States with assault troops for the North African invasion in the fall of 1942. During her overseas service she served for 18 months in Egypt. She had been taking a postgraduate course in Seattle when she was killed. Miss Cressman last visited her home here in September of 1945.

Besides her father she is survived by two brothers, Enos of Stratford and Elam of Elmira; and three sisters, Saloma of Montreal, Annie, who is a missionary in Liberia, and Mrs. Mahlon Shantz of Breslau. The body is being returned here for burial, but funeral arrangements have not yet been completed.

    WITH CHRIST Annie Cressman

Annie Cressman, affectionately known as "Ma" to the Liberians she loved, went to be with the Lord Monday, December 2, 1991.

Annie was born February 22, 1913 in the Mennonite community of Elmira, Ontario. As a young girl she felt God's call to missions, and overcoming many difficulties, she sailed for Liberia in 1940 where she served seven four-year terms (1940-1978).

In the early days when there were no roads, she undertook many jungle treks to preach the gospel. Annioe was a great communicator and saw the need to get the scriptures in the language of the people. First she reduced the Tchien language to writing and produced a primer for the day school she began. Later she translated portions of the New Testament in the Tchien language. Another major project was the Simple English New Testament under the auspices of the United Bible Society. Annie, always practical, also wrote simple booklets on the doctrines of the church for use by national pastors. Liberians and missionaries of all denominations held Annie in highest esteem.

After returning to Canada, Annie was active in missions promotion, in her home church at Elmira and as chaplain to the Chateau Gardens Nursing Home.

Funeral services were held Thursday, December 5 in Elmira Pentecostal Church led by Pastor Ronald Baker. Following Mennonite tradition Annie was laid to rest at a private ceremony preceding the memorial service in the church. Rev. James MacKnight, General Superintendent of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada brought the message pointing out that Annie will be greeted by many of her Liberian friends who lost their lives in the recent civil unrest. Rev. Gerald Cressman, Annie's nephew, brought the eulogy. Tributes by Rev. William Cornelius, Rev. Carman Lynn, Rev. Larry Broughton, Rev. William Morrow and representatives of the Elmira Ministerial and the Chateau Garden Nursing Home all pointed to a life of dedication that began when a young girl from Elmira said, "God, if you will make me a missionary, I will go."
