Martin Meeting House

According to Isaac Horst, "Martins meeting house was the first of the Old Order places of worship to be built. A meeting house is reported to have been built in 1830; burial was begun in the adjoining cemetery in 1831. Martins was aptly named. The first three bishops of the area were Martins, all descended from the pioneer, Peter Martin. The land on which the house stands was formerly owned by Martins (1979: 376)." Peter Martin, Jr. purchased 220 acres of land from his brother, Henry Martin, on May 8, 1824. Apparently he set aside four acres for a meeting house and burying ground at that time. The first burial is reported to have been that of Peter Martin, Sr., who died March 2, 1831. The meeting house was enlarged in 1900.

John Weber was the first minister, followed by Abraham W. Martin, Samuel Weber, Paul Martin, Tobias Martin and Urias Martin. At one time surrounded by countryside, the meeting house and cemetery are now completely encircled by the commercial development brought about by the rapid expansion northward of the city of Waterloo.

Surviving are 6 children (Amanda, Magdalena, Anna- Mrs. Israel Bowman, Ada-Mrs. Almon Bauman, William, and Amzi), 13 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother and 3 sisters. He was a member of St. Jacobs Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held on Nov. 3, in charge of Richard Yordy; interment in St. Jacobs Mennonite Church Cemetery.

In 1920 he was married to Anna Horst of Ohio, and farmed in Ohio until her death in 1941. In 1944, he moved back to Ontario, where he married Catherine Martin, who survives. MRS. ADDISON GINGRICH

The death of Mrs. Addison Gingrich, 57. occurred at her residence. the Sixth Concession of Peel, last Thursday night, She was the wife of Bishop Addison Gingrich, bishop of Mennonite churches in the district.

The former Mary Martin, she was the daughter of Amos Martin, Wallenstein, and the late Mrs. Martin, and was born Jan. 1, 1890. Her marriage to Bishop Gingrich took place in 1909. Three years after their marriage the couple took up residence on the Peel Township farm where they had resided since. Surviving, besides her husband, are two. sons, Noah, 8th Line of Peel, Sidney, at home; three daughters, Mrs. Enos (Lydia Ann) Horst, Mrs. Cleason (Salome) Martin, and Mrs. Rufus (Magdalena) Bauman, all of Peel Township. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, two brothers, Anson and Isaiah, Wallenstein; and four sisters, Mrs. Amos Bauman and Mrs. Ivan Cressman, Yatton, Mrs. Levi Gingrich, Elmira and Mrs. Peter Bowman, Floradale.

The body rested at the Dreisinger funeral Chapel until Sunday morning When removal was made to the home where the service was held Monday morning followed by a brief service at the North Woolwich Mennonite Church. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

Aaron B. Martin died Wednesday morning at 9:30 at his home near Three Bridges. He had been ill for several years.

He was the son of Mrs. John Frey of north of St. Jacobs and of the late Elias B. Martin. He is survived by his wife and six children, all of whom are at home. They are Allan, Melvin, Abner, Simon, Maryann and Esther. The oldest is 17 and the youngest five years of age, Three brothers also survive and three sisters. Lovina was born on March 3, 1921 near Waterloo, Ontario to the late Alvin and Lizzie Weber. In 1945 she married Tilman Brubacher who predeceased her in 1980. She is survived by her children Allan and Anna Brubacher, Alice (Allie) Brubacher, Eva and David Cressman, and Margaret Brubacher. She was predeceased by her son Elam (2011) and an infant daughter Martha (1952). Loved grandmother of Sharlene, Brian, Shirley and Brenda Brubacher, Sandra and Darren Gingrich, Mark and Allison Brubacher, Laura and Craig Fehrenbach, Amy and Drew Honderich, Janna Cressman, Jeff and Emily Cressman, Sara Cressman and her fiancé Dan Thompson. Great-grandmother to Brayden, Tristen, Emmalyn, Benjamin, Madison, Brooklyn and Josiah. She is survived by her sister Lydian Martin, her brother Enos and Hannah Weber, and her brother-in-law Ivan Martin. Predeceased by her stepmother Susannah Martin; brothers Abram (Elvina, Anna, Emma), Elam and Annie, Sylvester, and Sydney Weber; sisters Annie and Amos B. Lovina was a longtime member of Hawkesville Mennonite Church where she was very active in the women's ministries as long as her health allowed it. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, 62 Arthur St. S., Elmira on Monday, September 29, 2014 from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be at Hawkesville Mennonite Church, 15 Martha St., Hawkesville on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Erv Weins officiating. The casket will be open at the church from 12-1:15 p.m. when burial will take place in the Hawkesville Community Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee as expressions of sympathy. The family wishes to thank the staff of Columbia Forest LTCC, especially Anna and Arvin and their kind and caring staff on Breithaupt House, for their patient and loving care given to Lovina during the years of her stay there.

BOWMAN, Anna May 30, 1928 - May 18, 2019 Anna passed away peacefully on May 18, 2019, just shy of her 91st birthday. She lingered for less than two days in the hospital where she shared her last hours with her family - the great joy of her life. Mother, wife, and forever friend to many, Anna always put her faith and her family first. Her capacity to love others from all walks of life was her greatest gift. She was born in Heidelberg, ON, daughter of Simeon and Barbara (Snyder) Martin, the fifth of six children in a Mennonite home. As a child, she would always choose to work with her father rather than doing domestic work in the house. Anna married Israel Bowman (deceased 2015) in 1952. She is survived by her five children - Linda (John), Lynette (Jim), Linford (Dale), Raylene (Lance), and Brian (Marianne). Her grandchildren have been a source of great happiness for her as well - Leslie, Andrew (Laura), Heather, Arlen (Mike), Luke, R.J., Chad, and Greg. That she could live long enough to meet her two great-grandchildren - Ivo and Jaina - was almost miraculous to her. Her hands were rarely idle, each child, then grandchild, and even the great-grands, needed a handmade quilt, a crocheted afghan, and an endless supply of knitted dishcloths. As her eyesight waned, she could still count stitches and keep up her handiwork. She also made lap rugs for 'the old people' in her seniors' complex. Anna loved people. Her days in the Bowman Weavery in St. Jacobs were fun for her. In retirement, she joined many social events, where she made new friends and enjoyed the company. Her church family and community were so important to her as well. Anna's life can be described as one 'well lived'. She leaves many people with a hole in their hearts where her presence once lived, but the love she shared will remain always. Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Visitation held at Hanover Mennonite Church, on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 from 9:30 a.m. until time of a Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. Cremation has taken place and a Family Inurnment Service will be held at a later date in St. Jacob's Mennonite Cemetery. Obituary of Lydian Frey

On Friday, January 1st 2021, at 7:26 in the evening, Lydian Frey age 90, of Steinbach, Manitoba passed away peacefully at her residence surrounded by her family. She is survived by her four sons, Paul (Rhoda) Frey, Larry (LaVonne) Frey, Steven (Theresa) Frey, Calvin Frey, her daughter Ruthann (partner Bill) Snyder, fifteen grandchildren, and twenty seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Amos Martin and his wife Lorna, of Elmira, Ontario.

She was predeceased by her devoted husband of sixty five years, Alvin Frey, and by her parents Elias and Anne (Brox) Martin, and by four brothers and three sisters.

Lydian Frey was born in the Wellesley Township of southern Ontario on March 1, 1930 and she grew up on a small market garden farm surrounded by eight siblings and a loving community. She attended public school in Heidelberg, Ontario and she spoke often of walking the two miles to school and home again in all kinds of weather with her siblings and friends. She also spoke affectionately about helping her parents on the farm and going to market with them to sell their produce. As a young woman Lydian worked in a candy factory making chocolate covered maraschino cherries - a delicacy that she could not eat for the remainder of her days because of the overindulging in the "culls" that she did while on the quality control line at work.

At the age of seventeen she met a dashing young man by the name of Alvin Frey who swept her off her feet. Since her parents insisted that she not get married until she turned nineteen, Lydian waited for almost one seemingly-unending month after her nineteenth birthday before marrying Alvin in March of 1949. After their wedding, Lydian began housekeeping in the home of her new in-laws in the small village of Wallenstein, Ontario. About a year after moving with Alvin into his parents' home their first son, Paul, was born. In the year immediately following the birth of their son, they converted the upper story of an adjacent chicken barn into a cozy little residence for their growing family. They lived happily in this newly refurbished home until their second son, Larry, was born. At this point they purchased the house directly around the corner, and here they continued to live until the summer of 1960. Their third son, Steven, was born during this time.

Lydian and her husband Alvin and their young family were very involved in the small Mennonite church in Hawkesville. Although by this time Alvin had sampled various careers, including beginning a farm drainage company with his dad and his brothers and being part-owner of a small baby shoe manufacturing factory, he and Lydian always sensed a greater call on their lives to become more directly involved in the Lord's work. In 1959, during a summer trip with their children to visit Northern Light Gospel Mission in northwestern Ontario, Alvin and Lydian discovered that the calling that was to occupy much of their future life would be serving as missionaries among the Oji-Cree people north of Red Lake. Upon returning to Wallenstein they sold their house and belongings, and in 1960 they moved their young family to the small, isolated community of Deer Lake, Ontario.

Although this new life was completely different from anything that Lydian had ever lived, she always continued to maintain a secure and loving environment for her family and to provide a refuge for anyone in need. Many times her home became a place where sick babies, needy seniors or injured animals were nursed back to health. She also became adept at preparing gourmet meals using locally accessible moose, beaver, rabbit and muskrat, garnishing them with macaroni noodles, canned tomatoes, and other available "delicacies". Of necessity she became an expert at long-term meal planning and improvisation because many times during the freeze-up and breakup seasons new food supplies could only be obtained on a bi-monthly basis.

After spending twenty years in northwestern Ontario, and after the addition of an adopted daughter, Ruthann, and a fourth-born son, Calvin, Lydian returned with her husband and two youngest children to southern Ontario. Here she joined her husband in their ministry of founding and pastoring churches in Atwood and Listowel, Ontario. It was also during this happy time in Lydian's life that she and her husband welcomed an infant granddaughter, Tanya (Carlon) Yoder, into their home, raising her as one of their own children.

In 1987 Lydian and Alvin moved to Landmark, Manitoba, which became the home base from which her husband's trans-local church planting ministry took place. This work occupied their lives until their retirement and beyond. Here, as in every place that she lived, she participated fully in life and ministry by continuing to offer gracious hospitality to everyone - the trademark of her life. She was always able to cheerfully rise to the occasion and provide meals and lodging for unexpected guests, even when they arrived at inconvenient times the day or night.

Although Lydian's life was filled with ministry and service, she also always seemed to find time for a good hobby or two. Her loves included gardening, quilting and embroidering and other handwork. Her large, homemade quilting frame was almost permanently set up in the house at one location or other, and garden-fresh vegetables graced many a summer meal. She also loved experimenting with different recipes and foods. She often spoke with great nostalgia of a trip which she and Alvin made to Israel; one of the highlights of which was being able to sample various, random foods from the street vendors. She also spent many happy times in Mexico with her son, Steven, where she was always up for almost anything, including novel culinary adventures.

Shortly after her husband passed away in 2013 she moved into an apartment at Woodhaven Manor where she spent her final days. Her days there, as she became increasingly unable to walk easily, were spent praying for her family and acquaintances, reading numerous books and enjoying visits from family and friends. As her health failed, heaven became an ever-more real and tangible place where she desired to go with an increasing passion. And it is to that eternal place of endless joy and glory that her family has released her now.

We wish to express our deepest gratitude to the wonderful ladies of Home Care who so tenderly and lovingly served our Mom during their numerous visits to care for her. We are also very grateful for the products which Home Care provided, making it possible for the family to be involved with her care in her own residence until her final passing.

We also want to thank the Haven Group for enabling our family to provide care for our Mom within their facility in these most unusual times. We can't thank you enough.

A come & go viewing for Lydian will be held on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB. Please remain in your vehicle until instructed by the funeral home staff.

Verna was born December 2, 1932, 81 years ago in Wellesley Township, the daughter of the late Daniel and Elizabeth Martin. Beloved wife of the late Elmer Bauman who predeceased her January 3, 2000. Dear mother of Murray and wife Katie Bauman of Millbank and Leonard and wife Marilyn Bauman of R.R. # 1 Newton; loving grandmother of Dean and Ellen, Wanda and Aaron Kauffman, Darcy, Sheila, Tracy, Julia and friend Shea, Laurie, Graham and Jolene and great-granddaughters Averie and Jenna.
