Terrible Tragedy At Weissenburg
Albert Adam, Blacksmith, Kills His Wife and Shoots Himself. Inquest Will Be Held.
A terrible tragedy occurred at Weissenberg, near New Germany, on Wednesday afternoon at four o'clock when Albert Adam, blacksmith at that village shot his wife and killed himself. It appears the couple had been quarreling, their three children having been taken away from the parents some time ago and resided at the hotel at that place. The day previous he had given his wife a sum of money and yesterday he asked that the money be returned. She refused to comply with his request and he forthwith went to Guelph where he bought a revolver and returning met his wife on the road near the railway and shot her dead. He was afterwards found dead in the parlor of his home having also taken his own life. He was about 38 years old and his wife 32 years of age. The coroner from Guelph was summoned and an inquest will be held.

Result of Inquest of Adams Tragedy at Ariss on April 5th
Guelph, April 11 - Coroner Dr. H. C. McLean and his jury resumed their inquest into the death of Mrs. Mary Adams at 10.30 this morning in the Adams home, and in the same room in which Adams committed the act which occasioned this inquiry.
The first witness called was Louisa Hauck, the young wqman who was aiding Mrs. Adams to do the house cleaning at the time of the shooting. Her testimony threw practically no further light on the matter, but she did establish beyond doubt the fact that the direct cause of the shooting was that Mrs. Adams refused to deliver to her husband the $100 which his brother, Ignatz Adams, had paid him on a note the previous Saturday. Adams came up and knocked at the door, but Mrs. Adams told Miss Hauck to say that she (Mrs Adams) was not in there, which she
did.
The evidence of Michael Meyer the man who gave Adams a drive home from Guelph, cleared up the question of what became, of the four bullets which had been discharged. He stated that just after they had passed Marden, Adams took out the revolver and loaded it and fired one shot. This shot, the one which killed Mrs. Adams, the one which taken out of the wall by Constable Merewether, and the one with which Adams killed himself, made up the four which were discharged, and leave no doubt as to how many shots were fired by Adams in the house. Major Merewether and Constable Young detailed the state of affairs when they arrived, and also stated that they had searched the house an been unable to find the money which Mrs. Adams told Miss Hauck she had hidden from her husband.
The jury's verdict was as follows: "That Mary Adams came to her death in the township of Pilkington, on the 6th day of April, 1910, as the result of a bullet wound inflicted by her husband, Albert Adams, with muderous intent."
They added a very strong recommendation, to be sent to the Attorney-General, in the matter of the careless and indiscriminate use and
sale of firearms.

Lifetimes: A passion for vintage vehicles and teaching others
When Tom Schmidt and his new wife, Marcia, embarked on their Northern Ontario honeymoon in July of 1968, she had no idea what the vintage car buff had in mind.
Fortunately, she had a rich sense of humour. And patience, lots of patience.
"We travelled from one wrecking yard to the next," she said of her new husband's less than romantic idea of a fun time for newlyweds.
To say Tom was obsessed with cars, all cars, particularly old cars, would be an understatement. This passion led to him becoming an expert, admired by vintage car collectors around the world. Marcia said he would receive phone calls from Europe and all over North America, asking advice on restoring the old clunkers or where to source parts. He seemed to know everyone and everything.
"They could give him the VIN (vehicle identification number) and he'd be able to tell them where it was built, when it was built and the colour," she said, noting her husband loved getting these calls and "would talk for hours" about cars, a subject that didn't particularly interest her.
Tom was born May 27, 1947, in Kitchener to Cletus and Naomi Schmidt.
Susan Pearson, his only sibling, said she is not sure where Tom discovered his love of automobiles and that he had an innate ability to fix anything, whether it was an old car or a household object. Much of what he learned came from reading books, she said.....
Tom was a founding member of the Highwaymen Car Club in Kitchener, formed in 1961 to preserve street rod, vintage and classic vehicles.
At car shows, Marcia said he would go all day without a break. He just could not bear to waste even a precious second doing anything outside of talking shop, sharing knowledge and helping people.
Tom was a perfectionist. When he took on a car project, he would strip the vehicle right down to the bolts. Everything had to be cleaned and restored.....
