    Notes:

    THE HAHN BRASS FACTORY.

The Hahn Brass Co. is a firm of which New Hamburg is proud and justly so. One has only to look over their tine, modern plant and get some insight into the character of the wares they produce, to understand why this industry is a credit, not only to the men who originated it, but also to the municipality within whose confines it is located. The business was established in 1892 and is the first and only one in Canada to manufacture brass trimmings for furniture. Though this is the case, it must be borne in mind that the initial difficulties were many and the resources of two far seeing and able business men were frequently taxed. to the utmost. The machinery requisite for this industry, particularly the dies, are very costly and the held naturally limited. Against these odds, however, the Hahn Brass Co. has made steady progress, though it is quite safe to say that two such factories in the restricted Canadian field would find it impossible to make progress or possibly to make ends meet. The President of the firm is Mr. Lewis Hahn, who was in the furniture business in New Hamburg for 25 years prior to entering the present one. The Secretary and Manager is Mr. Alfred Hahn, formerly of New York; but connected with the brass manufacturing business for many years. These gentlemen have proved a winning team. Starting with 30 hands, they now employ 56. Their business extends all over the Dominion but the great bulk of it is confined to Ontario. Trade is good, which indicates that the furniture manufacturers of Canada have always received the "square deal" from the Hahn Brass Co. The plant, which is located on Waterloo St. near the depot., consists of a main building 3o x 120 feet, two stories high, with a wing 3o x 3o feet; a brass and iron foundry 50 x 80 feet erected a year ago and a stock room 26 x 3o feet. An addition of another story to the 3o x 3o foot annex is contemplated at an early date. This is rendered doubly necessary owing to the Company having just recently gone into the manufacture of Aluminum ware. They have purchased The Berlin Aluminum Co's. plant and removed it to New Hamburg. They turn out all kinds of Aluminum utensils and as this material is coming more and more into vogue each year with the intelligent housewife, the industry, especially when in the hands of business men of the calibre of Messrs.' Hahn, has a very bright future before it. Besides Messrs. Hahn, the officers above mentioned, Mr. E. R. Beger is Vice President of the Company. Both of the active members of the firm are public-spirited men, Mr. Lewis Hahn having given many years of service at the Municipal Council Board while Mr. Alfred Hahn is at present a member of the Free Library Board.
