    Notes:

    Death of Mr. John Walker.

Just as our last week's issue had left the press, the intelligence reached us that Mr. John Walker, one of Floradale's most popular and enterprising business men and County Commissioner for the Village of Elmira and the surrounding township of Woolwich, had suddenly died in a lane near his house on his way home from the postoffice. Words of pleasantry exchanged with a few neighbors had scarcely died off his lips, when he realed [sic] and fell lifeless to the ground. Heart failure proved to have been the cause of his death.

Mr. Walker was a man of considerable individuality, was generous hearted, intelligent, popular and public spirited, and his business interests, in company with Mr. Perine, of Doon, were of great importance to the prospering village which now so keenly feels his loss. He was a native of England and came to this country with his father when yet quite young. The family settled at Doon, where Mr. Walker became connected with the flax and twine industry of the late Mr. M. B. Perine. Later he was commissioned to open a branch factory at Floradale, and on the demise of the elder Mr. Perine, became a partner of the firm of Perine & Walker, the other partner being Mr. Ed. Perine of Doon. Deceased was a prominent society man having been a member of the I. O. F., Floradale, I. O. O. F. And Royal Arcanum lodges of Elmira. Representatives of these and neighboring lodges attended his funeral in a body, Rev. Leibold performing religious service at the house and at the grave. Rev. Hamilton who had just returned from a visit to his mother, preached the funeral sermon. He leaves a wife - his second wife - and six children to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father. He had reached the age of 49 years, 3 months and 7 days.

His remains were brought to the Elmira Union Cemetery on Friday afternoon, followed by a cortege of one hundred carriages occupied by relatives, friends and neighbors, who thus paid their last respect to his memory.

Writing editorially, of Mr. Walker's death, the Berlin News Record says: -

Following so closely the tragedy at Breslau, whereby County Councillor Shaw lost his life, the sudden death of Representative John Walker in Floradale last Wednesday evening has caused widespread consternation and sorrow. As Mr. Shaw was one of the brightest minds sent to the County Board from the South, Mr. Walker was his counterpart from the North, and his sudden taking off is a severe loss to this County and the village of Floradale.

Mr. Walker was a member of the Floradale Flax Co., in which Mr. E. Perine, of Doon, was associated with him, and was a level headed, capable business man. He went to Floradale from Doon about fifteen years ago and met success from the outset. His father, Mr. James Walker of Doon, is one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens there.

County Representative Walker was of English descent - one of those frank open hearted men, whose word was a sure token of performance and who did the square thing in business and everyday life. In words he was sparing being not given to easy speech, but was a thinker and a doer. Straightforward, honorable and hospitable, he made warm friends on every hand, and once known his good judgement and fairness won the trust and esteem of his neighbors and the public.

For a considerable time he served the Township of Woolwich as a representative of the Municipality, for a number of years as a Councillor and later as its Reeve and finally as its representative to the County Council. Mr. Walker, as is well known, was a staunch Conservative, and Woolwich leans the opposite way, hence his preferment and promotion in the world of municipal affairs, speaks highly as to his worth and the confidence he created.

He is gone and North Waterloo has lost a good and useful citizen. His death will be mourned by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, who sincerely admired his genial, manly manner and character.
