    Bridgeport Free Church

Land on the Bloomingdale Road was donated on November 16, 1848 by John U. Tyson for a free cemetery and free church, to be available for the use of any denomination. The first German Baptist congregation in Canada was organized here on September 10, 1851 by the Rev. August Rauschenbusch. (This 16-member congregation was the forerunner of Benton Street Baptist Church in Berlin/Kitchener.) The first pastor was Rev. Henry Schneider who was ordained to the Baptist Ministry on November 12, 1852.

Regular Sunday services in the Free Church were discontinued c.1955. The community then assumed responsiblity for the maintenance of the building which was donated to the Boy Scouts for their use. The Scouts continued to meet in it until 1968 when the front entrance was damaged by fire. The church was repaired and some renovations also were accomplished at the same time through the generosity of the Bridgeport Women's Institute. The building, which is designated as a Heritage Landmark of the City of Kitchener, has a plaque on the front wall of the church which reads: FREE CHURCH ERECTED 1848.2a

    King Street , North Side

    Queen St. North.

On the corner there was a frame building lengthwise with King Street, occupied by J. U. Tyson, dealer in groceries, wines, liquors and meats, erected about 1833. In 1841 Sheriff George Davidson bought this building and in it opened the first Post Office in 1842. His brother William was associated with him. Probably during 1845 Doering & Ahrens occupied the premises as a general store. A little later the firm was Huber & Ahrens. Mr. Huber acted as magistrate for a number of years, in which occupation he was popular and had much to do, people coming from small surrounding villages to Mr. Huber for fair trial. He was the second reeve in Berlin.

Next came a barber shop occupied by George A. Fischer who also served as dentist and as fruit dealer.

A house erected by C. A. Ahrens of Huber and Ahrens. Mr. Ahrens had a brick vault at the back of his kitchen, lined with an iron chest and considered fire proof. He was the first treasurer of Waterloo County and had this vault for safe keeping of his books and papers. The house was later occupied by Dr. Mylius.

Louis Breithaupt, who came from Buffalo in 1861 after having started his tanning business in Berlin in 1857, previously bought the corner of King and Queen Streets, and erected there the first section of the American Block in 1862.

Next to the Dr. Mylius house there was a two story brick building erected about 1855. It was occupied by Baedeker and Steubing who had a considerable business as book sellers and stationers, also as dealers in wallpaper, etc., besides doing some publishing. This business, moved later to the corner of King and Frederick Streets, continued until Mr. Steubing's death.

In his younger years Mr. Baedeker was a carpenter and had cut his knee with an adze, necessitating amputation and substitution of a cork leg.

On the site of the present Steel's store, George Davidson, later sheriff, erected a building in 1845 and moved the Post Office there when Doering and Ahrens occupied the corner store. Mr. Davidson also had a general store in this new building. About 1855 Kranz & Stroh occupied the building as a general store.

Next came a building occupied at first by George Klein and later the site of Henry Knell's jewelery shop.

John Winger's pump shop. Wooden pipe called pump logs were of about ten-inch timber, tamarack or pine logs with a bore of about 3". The pumps were mostly finished square and surmounted with turned tops.

A two story frame building painted white. John Winger's house. Eby's history mentions John Winger as having come from Pennsylvania in 1836.

A ten-foot lane leading back to the Public School grounds and into Winger's yard. The highest ground in this vicinity was in Winger's yard. Children were in the habit of sliding down the hill in winter to King Street. In 1840 Mr. Bentler erected a building and occupied the second floor as dwelling and shoe shop. Martin Messner had a music store on the ground floor which was a few steps above the street level. In 1855-6 Andrew Nicolaus took over the Winger house and changed it to a hotel. The first considerable street grading operation in Berlin was the lowering of the corner of King and Frederick and vicinity 8 to 10 feet. This put the St. Nicholas Hotel, as it was called, under the necessity of being extended downward one story and this lower part became the hotel office and bar room. At the westerly end of the hotel there was a shed and stable for horses. Over the shed, approached by a stairway, there was a hall known as St. Nicholas Hall used for concerts, balls and entertainments generally. At the rear of the adjoining St. Nicholas Hall there was a building on the high ground known as the Turner Hall and used as German Turnverein.

    Jonathan Shantz's Dam.

In reference to the general topography of the village of Winterbourne in my last letter I omitted mention of the dam which confines the waters of Cox's Creek. It is the property of Mr. Jonathan Shantz, and contributes the power that operates his saw mill and chopping machine. It is undoubtedly one of the largest confined bodies of water in Waterloo county. The village derives advantages from it in more ways than one. While it adds considerably to the picturesqueness of the village it affords good fishing for the inhabitants thereof when the season is on. In the spring it is alive with chubs, suckers, red fins and bass. The latter abound in large number and many are often caught weighing from three to four pounds. Its generous owner permits free access to it by the public, and consequently the average villager whose beef or pork supply has become diminished or who feels the want of a change from that sort of diet can in a short time with hook and line procure choice specimens for the frying pan. The law prohibiting the catching of bass at this season of the year was the only obstacle that prevented your correspondent from making the attempt to land a few of the big fellows to form a savory feast for the table of the editor of the CHRONICLE.

In addition to this advantage afforded to the village Mr. Shantz is the most prominent in giving it some industrial life. He was born near St. Jacobs, March 16, 1849, and is a son of Simon Shantz, Sr. When he was about a year old his parents moved from his birth place to Wilmot where they lived about 45 years He purchased the saw mill here in 1895 from his brother Ezra, who had purchased it from one David Clemens, and has since added a cider and chopping mill. The saw will has a capacity of producing about 8,000 feet of lumber per day, the chopper 200 bags per day and the cider mill about 2,000 gallons per day. He also owns a farm of twenty acres near the village, from which he derives plenty of the necessaries of life for his family. He has been in some way connected in the operation of a saw-mill since he was fourteen years of age, and it is altogether likely that he will follow that vocation as long as he lives, or at least while the timber continues to hold out. Mr. Shantz was married about twenty-two years ago to Miss Caroline, daughter of Mr. John Bingeman, of near Washington, Nine children have been born to them, two of whom are dead. They are of the Mennonite faith and Reform in politics. The family lives in one of the venerable landmarks of the village. It is the old stone tavern which was built in 1836 by the late John Tyson, who was its landlord for two or three years and afterwards was kept by Henry Wenglin and others. It was a famous resort for the travelling public years ago. It is a substantial stone structure, but save its convenient location near the public highway, it does not show signs of having once been a public house. Mr. Shantz is a popular citizen and a man entitled to the respect and esteem of all who meet him or have business transactions with him.

    Notes:

Hannah was orphaned as an infant and raised by her uncle, Mr. Tyson, in Bridgeport, Ontario, Canada. She married John Wissler on December 22, 1835.

    They had eight children:
    Sarah Ann (1837-1837)
    Franklin H. (b. 1838)
    Jacob (b. 1841)
    Levi (b. 1843)
    Aaron (b. 1847)
    Hannah (b. 1852)
    Anna (1855-1856)
    Angeline (b. 1856)

A year after the birth of their youngest, the family moved to Columbia Furnace, Virginia. During the Civil War they returned first to Canada and then to Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, as they had been warned that they were not safe in Shenandoah County.

After the war, however, the family once again made their home at Columbia Furnace. As a widow, Hannah continued to reside in the family home there with her daughter, Angeline. In winter 1888, however, the home burnt, and in the transition to a new residence, Hannah took cold. She died of complications not long after.

Hannah was described as the kindest of women, of small stature and quiet, but a power in her own house.

    360 River Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba

This brick, L-shaped house at the corner of Scott Street and River Avenue has been occupied continuously by the Tyson family since June 1900. Originally built by a man named John Cope during 1883, it was the home of a brother of A. J. Andrews, a mayor of Winnipeg during the 1890s. In 1890, G. A. F. Andrews and his spouse skated into a hole in the river and were lost. Walter Tyson, who had come to Manitoba from Berlin, Ontario, purchased the home in 1900 from James Lord who had acquired the fashionable structure from the Andrews' Estate.

Since that time, the building has withstood the elements remarkably well, despite the fact that it is not underpinned. As one might readily perceive from the first slide, the house was a popular style in Winnipeg during the 1880s. The roof had treillage running along its spine, finials Lit the gable-peaks, 'gingerbread' at the gables, labels over the windows and quoins at the corners of the walls. Inside, one can find the original woodwork, excellently carved, heavily varnished and superbly fitted. In most houses of this vintage, the old, varnished doors and staircases were painted. This usually occurred when the occupant decided that the colour scheme was out-of-date. According to the Tyson sisters, the original 'light' or transom above the front door was red in colour. Their aunt had this feature changed many years ago, as she did not want a red light in the front door! [4]
