When a young man he came to Canada and settled near Doon, Waterloo County, where he was married to Barbara (No. 5388), daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Biehn) Rosenberger. She was born near Preston, Ontario, January 29th, 1804, and died January 30th, 1885. He died December 7th, 1857. To them were born eleven children"

Historic Building:
This large, two storey fieldstone farmhouse was built by Daniel Rudy in 1847. The builder carved his name and the date of construction on one half of a grindstone and embedded it in the second storey front wall to the right of the door. Like many early mennonite houses it is built in the plain Georgian style and faces south.
The house retains many of its early features. Some of the original small-paned twelve-over-eight windows remain. A number of other windows are six-over-six panes. It also has small attic windows as well as a bell in a cupola which was rung to call the men in from the fields. In the 1870's, a brick doddy house was added (for the parents when the son took over the farm), the porch, the two-over-two paned windowsand the board and batten summer kitchen may also have been added at this time. Colourful granite stones with large corner blocks give the house a pleasant patchwork-quilt appearance. Custom was to plaster the stone work under the front verandah.
All facades of this historical "rural" Waterloo home were recognized in the designation of the structure as a Heritage Landmark.<sup>1a

George Rudy

An old inhabitant died on Sunday in Waterloo. Born in 1823 in this County, married in 1847 to Barbara Lichty, he devoted himself to agriculture until he moved to Waterloo in 1887. His only child, a daughter, died in the same year after a 19-year marriage to J. Kunkel. His widow, five grand-children and 6 great-grandchildren mourn his loss. Burial took place yesterday, Wednesday, at the Mennonite cemetery in Berlin.

Rebecca Rudy, widow of the late Samuel Shantz, died at her residence in Berlin on Wednesday June 7th, at the age of seventy-three years, and 9 months. The funeral took place from her late residence on Friday morning at 9 a.m. to the old Mennonite church at Berlin and was attended by a large concourse of mourning friends and relatives.

SUDDEN DEATH\emdash It is with feelings of sorrow that we have this week to record the death of Mr. Benjamin Rudy, a highly respected farmer in this neighborhood, which sad event took place suddenly took place suddenly and unexpected at his home near here early on Wednesday morning of last week. Mr. Rudy had been in his usual health the day before, and that night went to bed with the intention of getting up very early next morning to continue his seeding operations. Towards four o'clock next morning his wife was awakened by his heavy irregular breathing, and striking a light she found him in a dying condition. She did all in her power to make him comfortable but he died in less than ten minutes after she was up.

Dear reader here is a case for reflection. A strong man yet in the prime of life apparently in the best of health, certainly in the best of spirits, plans out his work for the morrow, retires early, sleeps soundly until within half an hour before the time of rising when he is suddenly summoned before a higher tribunal, and a few broken and unintelligible sentences in answer to the anxious inquiries of his wife, a few convulsions in mortal agony and all is over and this in less than a quarter of an hour and before any of his children who sleep under the same roof could be called to his beside. SHANTZ - On the 15th of Jan., 1900, in Waterloo Co., Ont., of liver complaint, Sister Barbara (Rudy) Shantz, beloved wife of Menno E. Shantz, aged 57 years, 6 months and 28 days. She was born June 18th, 1842. She leaves behind a husband, six children and nine grandchildren. She has been a member of the Mennonite Church for many years. During her last illness she bore her afflictions with Christian patience and was waiting for the summons: "Come up higher." Although mother will be missed greatly at home, still the Lord will never leave us nor forsake us. Funeral services were held in the D. Eby M. H. by E.S. Hallman in English from Rev. 22: 14, and Jonas Snyder in German from Rev. 21: 7. The meeting house was probably never so crowded as upon this occasion.

Shantz, Israel R. (1863-1910)

Israel R. Shantz Israel R. Shantz: minister and bishop of the West Zion Mennonite Church near Carstairs, Alberta, was born 15 August 1863 and died 15 December 1910. He married Elizabeth Schmitt (22 August 1868-31 December 1962) on 26 September 1886. They were the parents of 3 sons and five daughters.

Israel Shantz was converted at revival meetings near Berlin (Kitchener), Ontario in 1891. He served for nine years as superintendent of a new Sunday School near Waterloo, Ontario, before moving with his family to the Carstairs district in 1901. He and his wife participated in the organization of the West Zion Mennonite Church later, on 15 September 1901, he was chosen by lot and ordained as minister of the new congregation. He was ordained as bishop 3 October 1909, and served in that office until his death in 1910, traveling extensively as an evangelist and visiting Mennonites who had settled in scattered small clusters in various districts of Alberta and Saskatchewan. He maintained an exceptionally strong and abiding interest in the work of the Sunday School.

Shortly after his arrival at Carstairs, Israel Shantz suffered a serious leg injury while unloading lumber which had been shipped to the community by rail. The injury never completely healed, causing him considerable discomfort, particularly when travelling. While on a trip to visit settlers arriving in the Tofield district, he suffered a fall which aggravated his leg injury. Infection set in and he returned home a sick man. There were further complications, and he died at his home in Carstairs at the relatively young age of 47. His funeral was reportedly the largest held in that community up to that time, and gave expression to the far-reaching influence he had exerted during the time of his ministry.

Shantz's influence extended far beyond his home community. He was, from the time it was created in 1903, an influential leader in the Alberta Mennonite Conference, which later became the Alberta-Saskatchewan Mennonite Conference and is now the Northwest Mennonite Conference. He offered help and practical spiritual advice to many Mennonite settlers. As a faithful follower of Jesus, he sought to apply the teachings of the Jesus to the opportunities and problems of everyday life. The impact of his life was remembered with affection by members of the congregation at the 2001 centennial celebrations.

Shantz. - Israel R. Shantz died at his home near Carstairs, Alberta, on Dec. 15, 1910; aged 47 y. 5 m. He was born near Berlin, Ont., Aug. 15, 1863. On Sept. 22, 1886, he was married to Elizabeth Schmitt. To this union were born 3 sons and 5 daughters. During the eventful meetings of 1891, held in Berlin, he was converted and at once became active in the Master's service. A new Sunday school was started near Waterloo, Ont., of which he was superintendent for 9 years in succession. In the year 1901, he moved with his family to his late home, and was one of the pioneer settlers in the Waterloo district. His active Christian service did not cease when he moved west. In the same year, Sept. 15, he was ordained a minister of the Gospel in the Mennonite Church, by Bish. S. F. Coffman. On Oct. 3, last year, he was ordained to the office of bishop to have oversight of the churches in Alberta, by Bish. E. S. Hallman. About a month ago, he returned home from looking after a new church colony, a sick man. A complication of diseases set in, and he suffered much, but bore it all patiently. Under this heavy cloud of sorrow we humbly bow to God's will, and say, not ours but Thy will be done. He leaves behind him a loving wife, 3 sons, 5 daughters, 4 brothers and 5 sisters, who mourn their loss, which to him is eternal gain. Sorrow is expressed in the community. The Church is bereft of her pastor. The conference will miss one of her ablest workers. He was buried at West Zion, where the largest funeral held at this place gave expression of how far-reaching his influence was exerted. Services were conducted by N. B. Mrs. Martin Frey

The sad death took place at Acton on Saturday of a former Waterloo resident in the person of Mrs. Martin Frey. Mrs. Frey removed with her husband to Acton about one year ago. She leaves to mourn her death a loving husband and 7 children. The remains were conveyed to Kitchener today and the funeral took place to the Kitchener Mennonite cemetery this afternoon.

Mrs. Josiah S. Shantz, 79, nee Sophianna Rudy, died yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. David Bearinger, Parkway, following a brief illness. Born in Waterloo Township on Feb. 8, 1862, she was a daughter of the late Abram Rudy and Mary Snyder Rudy. The late Mrs. Shantz was a member of Weber Mennonite Church, Strasburg. Her husband, Josiah S. Shantz died Jan 5, 1940 Surviving are one son, Alvin, of Waterloo, and a daughter, Mrs. Bearinger of Parkway. Six grandchildren also survive. Private funeral service will be held from the home of her daughter on Friday at 2: 30 p.m., thence to First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, for public service at 3 p.m. Rev. Simon Martin will be in charge. Remains will be at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until Thursday noon.

Martin.-Leah Rudy was born Aug. 8, 1855, in Waterloo Co., Ont.; died Oct. 31, 1931; aged 76 y. 2 m. 23 d. On Jan. 31, 1875, she was united in marriage to Henry P. Martin who predeceased her about seven years ago. To this union were born 14 children, 8 of whom are still living. They are as follows: Lydia (Mrs. Noah Sittler near Hawksville with whom she resided), Menno, Christian, Jonathan, Susanna (Mrs. Samuel O. Stauffer), Maryann (Mrs. Joseph Gingrich), Nancy, Leah (Mrs. Norman Gingrich). There also survive 1 brother (Daniel Rudy), 31 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. On Apr. 22, 1929, she suffered from a stroke, from which time on she was confined to her bed. Although she was blind and almost helpless she never complained. The last few months she suffered much pain but bore it patiently till the end. She was a member of the Mennonite Church, having accepted Christ in her youth, and remained faithful, having a desire to go and be with those already gone before. Funeral services conducted at the home by Henry Bauman and at Conestoga Riverside Church by Henry Bauman and Jesse Bauman. Texts, II Cor. 4: 17, 18; I Cor. 3: 11-15. Burial in adjoining cemetery.

Weber. - Barbara (Rudy) Weber, wife of Joseph S. Weber, was born May 13, 1876; died August 31, 1931; aged 55 y. 3 m. 18 d. The departed was married to Moses Sauder of Goodville, Pa., who predeceased her, in 1907. She was later married to Daniel Ernst of St. Jacobs, Ont., who died nearly five years ago. She is survived by 1 brother Daniel of Preston, Ont., and 1 sister Leah (Mrs. Henry Martin) of Hawkesville, Ont.; 19 step-children, 49 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Early in life she became a member of the Mennonite church, in which she remained faithful until death. Services were at the home by Bro. Jonas Snider (Rev. 21) and Bro. J. B. Martin (Heb. 11: 13). Burial at the David Eby cemetery.

Rudy.--William, son of the late Benjamin Rudy, was born in Wellesley Twp., Ont., April 24, 1864; died Sept. 8, 1947; aged 83 y. 4 m. 14 d. He was married to Rachel Reist; she preceded him in death in February, 1938. Surviving are 3 sons (Jacob, Waterloo, Ont.; Omar, Westmontrose, Ont.; and Abner, New Hamburg, Ont.), 4 daughters (Mary--Mrs. E. Bechtel, Mannheim, Ont.; Martha--Mrs. Harry Thaler, Centerville, Ont.; Rachel--Mrs. Percy Snyder, Mannheim, Ont.; and Sarah--Mrs. Almer Scheidel, Kitchener, Ont.), one brother (Jeremiah, Waterloo, Ont.), and 2 sisters (Mrs. Simeon Gingerich, Kitchener, Ont.; and Mrs. Lucy Blodgett, Rochester, N.Y.). He was a faithful, punctual church-goer and taught his family to worship God. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 10 by Howard W. Stevanus at the Waterloo Mennonite Church

Centreville, Sept. 8: - A well-known farmer in the Centreville area for many years and a member of the Waterloo Mennonite Church, William Rudy, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Almer Schiedel, 66 Homewood Ave., Kitchener, Saturday,after a brief illness. He was 83.

Born in Wellesley Tp. on April 23, 1864, he was the son of the late Mr.and Mrs. Benjamin Rudy. Mr. Rudy's wife, Mrs. Rachel (Reist) Rudy predeceased him in Feb. 1938. He is survived by three sons, Jacob, Waterloo; Omar, West Montrose and Abner, New Hamburg; also four daughters, Mrs. Eden Bechtel and Mrs. Percy Snyder, both of Mannheim; Mrs. Harry Thaler, Centreville and Mrs. AlmerSchiedel, Kitchener. Mr. Rudy is also survived by one brother, Jeremiah, Waterloo; two sisters, Mrs. Simeon Gingrich, Kitchener and Mrs. Lucy Blodgett of Rochester, N.Y.

Funeral service will be held at 3 o'clock Wednesday from the Waterloo Mennonite Church and burial will be in the Waterloo Mennonite Cemetery. Rev. Howard Stevanus of Bloomingdale will conduct the service. The body is now resting at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home where it will remain until 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Snyder.-Nancy, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Benjamin Rudy, was born in Woolwich Twp., Ont., Sept. 19, 1867; died at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital, Aug. 24, 1947; aged 79 y. 11 m. 5 d. Death resulted from cerebral thrombosis. In 1923 she was married to Noah B. Snyder, who predeceased her in 1942. Surviving are one stepson (Alvin, Preston, Ont.), 2 brothers (William, Centerville, Ont.; and Jeremiah, Waterloo, Ont.), 2 sisters (Hannah-Mrs. Simeon Gingrich, Kitchener, Ont.; and Mrs. Lucy Blodgett, Rochester, N. Y.). Two brothers (Ellias and Josiah) and 4 sisters (Barbara-Mrs. Aaron Betzner, Sarah_Mrs. Caleb Shelley, Magadalena-Mrs. Edward Kaufman, and Eleanor-Mrs. Joe Porn) predeceased her. She was a member of the Mennonite Church. During the last years of her life she was a cheerful guest of the Braeside Home, Preston, Ont. Funeral services were held Aug. 26 at the Hagey Mennonite Church, Preston. Interment was made in the Cressman Mennonite Cemetery, Breslau, Ont. Merle Shantz and Harold Groh were in charge of the services.

A member of the Hagey Mennonite Church. Preston and the widow of the late Noah B. Snyder. Mrs. Nancy Snyder, died at the K-W Hospital yesterday after a lingering illness. She was 79. The daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Rudy, Mrs. Snyder was born Sept, 19, 1867, in Woolwich Township. Her husband, Noah B. Snyder died Sept 2, 1942. They were married in 1923. Mrs. Snyder is survived by one step-son, Alvin of Preston; two brothers, William Rudy, Centreville, and Jeremiah Rudy, Waterloo; two sisters, Mrs. Simon Gingrich, Kitchener, and Mrs. Lucy Blodgett, Rochester, N.Y. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 2:30 o'clock at the Hagey Mennonite Church, Preston. Burial will be in the Cressman Mennonite Cemetery, Breslau. The Rev. Merle Shantz will officiate at the service. The remains are resting at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until 1 p.m. Tuesday, when the body will be taken to the church for the service.

Mrs. Caleb Shelly. Ill only five days, Mrs. Caleb Shelly, 64 Schneider Avenue, passed away yesterday afternoon at the family residence. Mrs. Shelly, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Rudy, was in her 67^th year and was born in Woolwich township. Married in the city on Feb 28, 36 years ago, the couple resided on a farm about three miles from the city of Petersburg road for 31 years before moving to Kitchener five years ago. She was a member of the Sterling Avenue Mennonite Church. The husband survives with four brothers, William and Jeremiah Rudy, of Waterloo, Josiah in Melville, Sask., Elias of Kitchener, and five sisters, Mrs. Noah Snyder, Preston, Mrs. Edward Kaufman, Bamberg, Mrs. Joseph Porn, Redland, Cal., Mrs. Simon Gingrich, Guernsey, Sask., Mrs. John Blodgett, Rochester, N.Y. The funeral will be held Sunday with a private service at the home at 2 p.m. and thence to Sterling Avenue Mennonite for public service at 2:30. Interment will take place in David Eby Cemetery, Erb street, Waterloo. Rev. U.K. Weber will officiate. Remains will be resting at Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until Saturday noon.

Betzner - Barbara Rudy, beloved wife of Aaron Betzner, was born Jan. 19, 1870, in Waterloo Co., Ont.; died of a lingering illness at the Freeport Sanitarium on Sunday morning, March 15, 1925; aged 55 y. 1 m. 27 d. Sister Betzner was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church for 35 years. During her illness she expressed peace in her soul and departed with a glorious hope for the future. Her departure is mourned by her sorrowing husband and one son (Allan), six sisters and three brothers. Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite Church of Kitchener, March 18, conducted by the brethren, C. F. Derstine and Oscar Burkholder.

Death summoned a well known citizen of Kitchener on Sunday, in the person of Mrs. Aaron Betzner who passed away at the Freeport sanitarium after a lingering illness. Deceased, whose maiden name was Barbara Rudy, was a life-long resident of Waterloo County, A sorrowing husband and one son survive: also six sisters and three brothers. They are Mrs. J. Porn of Rediands, Calif., Mrs. S. Gingrich of Guernsey, Sask., Mrs. Noah Snider, Preston; Mrs. Ed. Kaufman, Bamberg: Mrs. C. Shelley, Kitchener, and Mrs. Lucy A. Rudy of Rochester. N.Y. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon from the residence in Kitchener to the East End Mennonite church for service and the adjoining cemetery for interment.

The 'death occurred yesterday morning at the Freeport Sanitarium of Mrs. Aaron Betzner, 236 East Weber street. The deceased had been in failing health for some time. Mrs. Betzner, who was before her marriage, Barbara Rudy, was a lifelong resident of Waterloo County, living for many years in this city. MRS. EDWARD KAUFMAN

A lengthy illness terminated in death at noon yesterday for 71-year old Mrs. Edward Kaufman (Nee Magdalena Rudy), Bamberg. She died at the Eix Convalescent Home, Young Street, Waterloo. A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Rudy, she was born July 31, 1872, in Woolwich Township. Surviving are her husband, two sons, Walter of Bamberg and Wilfred of Jarvis, R.C.A.F., a daughter, Mrs. George Berge of Brighton, four brothers, William Rudy of Centreville, Jeremiah of Waterloo, Josiah of Melville, Sask., and Elias of Kitchener, and four sisters, Mrs. Noah B. Snyder of Preston, Mrs. George Porn of California, Mrs. Simon Gingerich of Kitchener and Mrs. John Blodgett of Rochester, N.Y. There are four grandchildren. She was a member of Heidelberg Evangelical Church. Remains are resting at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until noon Monday when removal will be made to Emmanuel Evangelical Church, Waterloo, for services at 2 p.m. Rev. H.E. Roppel of St. Jacobs will officiate. Burial will be in the Waterloo Mennonite Cemetery.

Joseph M. Porn and Miss Eleanor Rudy were married Tuesday afternoon, December 27, 1921, at the parsonage of the M. E. Church, South 426^th street. The wedding was a quiet one and will prove a pleasurable surprise to the many friends of the well-known and popular couple. Only a few friends were present. Mrs. W. A. Adams sang " I Love You Truly" and Miss Glenetta Bunten played Lohengrin's Wedding March. The bride was handsomely gowned in bronze colored satin crepe, with hat to match, and wore a corsage of lilies of the valley. Jeremy Rudy, 74, died suddenly last night at his residence, 152 Glasgow St. An employee of the CPR Express Company for about 25 years he retired seven years ago. He was a member of Calvary Memorial Evangelical UB Church. A former resident of Guernsey, Sask. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Rudy. His marriage to the former Catherine Schweitzer, who survives, took place at Petersburg, Jan. 30, 1907.

Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. E.D. (Mildred) Hahn, Hamilton, and one sister, Mrs. Lucy Blodgett, Rochester, N.Y.

The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home where the funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. Interment will be made at the Waterloo Mennonite Cemetery. Rev. A.E. Pletch will be in charge of the service assisted by Rev. .F. Barthel.

Following a brief illness, Josiah H. Rudy, 68, of Melville, Sask., died at the Regina Hospital yesterday. The s/o the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Rudy, he was born in Wellesley Tp. July 24, 1878. He took up residence in the west when a young man and was active in contracting work in Calgary and Edmonton. He served overseas during the First Great War. Mrs. Hannah Gingrich

Mrs. Hannah Gingrich, 70, of 149 Belmont St. (formerly Fischer), died Saturday night at the K-W Hospital Annex, Knollwood Park, following a lengthy illness. Born in Waterloo County on March 6, 1880, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Rudy. She was a member of First Mennonite Church, Kitchener. Her husband, Simeon Gingrich, predeacesed her on May 30, 1949.

Surviving are three sons, Clement, Regina Sask.; Winston, Galt, and Reynard, Ajax Ont.; two daughters, Mrs. Henry (Hope) Bowman, Waterloo and Mrs. Milton (Eloise) Near, Kitchener; one sister, Mrs. John Blodgett, Rochester, N.Y., and seven grandchildren.

The body will be at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral home until Wednesday at 1 p.m. when removal will be made to Erb St. Mennonite Church, Waterloo, for funeral service at 3 p.m. Rev. John H. Hess will officiate. Burial will be in Waterloo Mennonite Cemetery.

Elias H. Rudy

Elias H. Rudy, 62, died suddenly today at his home, 63 Church St., as a result of a heart attack. He had been suffering from a heart condition for a number of years.

Born June 13, 1882, near Bamberg, he as a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Rudy. As a young man he went to the Canadian West where he established a retail hardware business at Guernsey, Sask. In 1918 he married Mary Ann Shantz, who survives. The late Mr. Rudy returned to the Kitchener area in 1926 and had resided here until the time of his death. He was engaged in the upholstery trade.

In addition to his wife he is survived by three brothers, William of Centreville, Jeremiah of Waterloo, Josiah of Melville, Sask., and by four sisters, Mrs. Noah Snyder of Preston, Mrs. Ellen Porn of Redland, Cal., Mrs. Simeon Gingerich of Waterloo and Mrs. John Blodgett of Rochester, N.Y. Three sisters predeceased him.

Remains are resting at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until 10 a.m. Friday when the removal will be made to his late residence. 63 Church St., from where a private funeral service will be held Saturday At 2:30 p.m. thence to first Mennonite Church for public service at 3 p.m. Burial will be made in First Mennonite Cemetery. Bishop C.F. Derstine will officiate.

Mrs. Lucy Blodgett

Mrs. Lucy Blodgett, 75, of Rochester, N.Y., died March 14 at her home. [Mar. 14, 1960 hand written on obit]

A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Menno Rudy, she was born in Bamberg and lived in the K-W area until about 37 years ago.

Surviving are one son, John, and one daughter, Althea, both of Rochester. There are several nephews and nieces in the K-W district.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday and burial was in Rochester.

Shantz.-Nelson Shantz was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., on June 11, 1865; died June 8, 1930; aged 64 y. 11 m. 28 d. In 1886 he was married to Barbara Snyder. To this union were born 5 children. He is survived by his bereaved wife and family, and 3 sisters. Two brothers predeceased him. He was a kind and loving husband and father, many times sacrificing his own pleasures to make others happy. During his recent illness of 4 weeks he suffered very much and often expressed his desire to go to his heavenly home. In early life he became a member of the Mennonite Church and died in that faith. Funeral services were held at the Waterloo Church, Wed. June 11, by Bros. Manasseh Hallman and J. B. Martin. Interment in David Eby Cemetery

Shantz. - Cleason Shantz was born July 28, 1870. He was converted in his youth and united with the Mennonite Church, of which body he was a member till death. He united in matrimony with Maria Shantz, Dec. 19, 1894. They were blest with 6 children of whom 2 preceded him, leaving the widow, 2 daughters and 2 sons, but we trust, not as such that have no hope, as he expressed himself as ready to depart if God saw fit. Died Dec. 8, 1920; aged 50 y. 4 m. 10 d. Services at the Waterloo Mennonite Church, conducted by Manasseh Hallman and Jonas Snider.

Samuel Shoemaker, a young man belonging to this town, died at his father's house early Thursday morning. He had been employed on the steamer Manitoba, on Lake Huron, which met with an accident recently. His death was the result of exposure and hardship while that vessel was disabled. Shoemaker walked from Owen Sound to Elmira, after landing, while in a very weak condition. Isaiah Bowman was born in Waterloo County of Pennsylvania German parents, who moved to Michigan when he was a small child.

His great scholastic achievements won for him distinction in many fields and he became known as one of the world's foremost geographers. A graduate of Harvard and Yale Universities, he became a professor at Yale. He led expeditions to South America in 1907 and 1913 and served as geographer and geologist on a Peruvian expedition in 1911.

He was President of Johns Hopkins University from 1935 to 1948.

Dr. Bowman accompanied the American delegation to the Peace Conference following World War I and was adviser to Presidents Wilson and Roosevelt. He also took part in the World Security Conference in Dunbarton Oaks in 1944.

In honour of his memory and in recognition of his many accomplishments, the University of Waterloo named its Social Science Building, "The Isaiah Bowman Building

University of Waterloo quietly removes plaque, portrait of anti-Semite
American scholar calls on UW to publicly explain why it was wrong to name a building after 'lifelong eugenicist, anti-Semite, and racist'

WATERLOO REGION - The University of Waterloo has quietly removed a portrait and plaque from a campus building dedicated to a noted scholar and administrator who was also a notorious anti-Semite.

When it was built in the late 1960s, the Environment 1 building \emdash known as EV-1 \emdash was named after Isaiah Bowman, a pre-eminent geographer and adviser to Franklin Roosevelt who was born in Waterloo County in the late 1800s.

But an American researcher says Bowman was a virulent anti-Semite, a racist and strong supporter of eugenics.

Sandford Jacoby, a Distinguished Research Professor in history, management and public policy at the University of California Los Angeles, raised a red flag earlier this month about Waterloo's Bowman connection after he learned about Bowman's history of anti-Semitism, racism and support for eugenics.

"After a short delay due to the pandemic, we removed the material this year," said university spokesperson Nick Manning.

The university is committed to address systemic racism in all its forms, he said.

Naming the building after Bowman does not reflect the values of the university today, Manning said.

The name was officially changed to Environment 1 in 2008, and the university just got around to removing the portrait and plaque.

Jacoby came across Bowman's University of Waterloo connection while researching U.S. immigration policy before and during the Second World War.

Knowing he had at least one family member, an uncle, who was murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust, Jacoby started researching what happened to his relatives under the Nazis.

That's how he learned of Bowman's work and influence and discovered online a publication called "The First 50 Years: A History of the University of Waterloo Environmental Studies Faculty," written by Robert Shipley, a retired school of urban planning professor in time for the faculty's anniversary in May 2019.

Jacoby was outraged after learning the University of Waterloo had named a building after Bowman and has never publicly explained why that was wrong.

Bowman was born in 1875 into a Mennonite family near Linwood, in what was then Waterloo County. The family soon moved, joining a Mennonite colony in Michigan.

He left Michigan to attend Harvard University, and eventually became a professor of geography at Yale. He became a Presbyterian and married the daughter of a Harvard professor.

He left Yale to become president of the American Geographical Society. In 1918, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson asked Bowman and the society to help redraw the borders of Europe after the First World War.

"It launched his career as a Washington insider," said Jacoby. "In 1938 he became an adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt on refugee affairs."

Bowman successfully supported very low quotas on Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazis. Instead of allowing Jews into the U.S., Bowman said they should be settled in places with few whites, so as not to "antagonize" them, such as Guyana, Kenya and the Philippines.

"Bowman was complicit in efforts to make it difficult for Jewish refugees to escape to the U.S. during the Nazi period," said Jacoby.

Bowman played a minor role in the 1945 San Francisco peace conference that led to the creation of the United Nations. During his time as president of Johns Hopkins University \emdash from 1935 to 1948 \emdash Bowman discriminated against African-American students and Jewish professors, said Jacoby.

Jacoby knew all this when he read the history of Waterloo's environment faculty and learned the university had named a building after Bowman. Jacoby immediately contacted Shipley with a bunch of questions.

That was on April 11 \emdash almost three years after Shipley's departmental history was first published.

Shipley said he emailed Jean Andrey, the dean of the environment faculty, to let her know Jacoby would be getting in touch with some questions about Bowman and the university.

Within days Bowman's photo and plaque were quietly removed.

The University of Waterloo is going about the situation all wrong, said Jacoby.

"Transparency regarding its removal of the Bowman plaque is vital," said Jacoby.

"The university ought to be proud, not secretive about what it's done \emdash students must learn about the past so that it will never be repeated."

Bowman's ideas can still be seen in headlines today.

"Just the other day Britain announced a plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda, stooping to racist, anti-immigrant sentiments of pro-Brexit voters," said Jacoby. "It's eerily reminiscent of Bowman's approach."

Mrs. Menno M. Burkhardt of 7 Central St. Waterloo, died May 14 at Green Gables Nursing Home. She was 81.

The former Hattie Lichty was born in Woolwich Township on May 6, 1887 and was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Lichty. Mrs. Burkhardt was a member of the Erb Street Mennonite Church and the Women's Missionary and Service Auxiliary. She lived in the Twin City area all her life.

She is survived by her husband, to whom she was married in Waterloo in 1914, four sons, Melvin and Mahlon of Waterloo, Donald of RR 2 Petersburg, one daughter, Mrs. E. Clare (Nora) Shantz of Waterloo, one sister, Mrs. Allen (Nancy) Martin of RR 2, Drayton, 15 grandchildren.

Mrs. Burkhardt was predeceased by two sons, Oren, in infancy, and Vernon, in February, 1966, two brothers, Noah and John.

Service was held May 16 with Bishop J.B. Martin and Rev. Milton Schwartzentruber officiating. Burial was in the Erb Street Mennonite cemetery.

Born May 29, 1889, In Woolwich township, he was the son of the late Solomon Lichty and Sarah Ziegler. He had lived in Waterloo for the past 35 years.

Surviving are his wife, the former Nellie Shantz; one son Edward of Waterloo; one step-son Stanley Shantz of Waterloo; one brother, Sidney of Waterloo; two sisters, Mrs. Martin of Drayton and Mrs. Menno (Hattie) Burkhardt of Waterloo; and six grandchildren. One brother predeceased him.

Shantz, Alvin, son of the late Josiah and Sophianna (Rudy) Shantz, was born in Woolwich Township, Ont., Jan. 30, 1886; passed away suddenly at his home in Waterloo, Ont., Dec. 12, 1957; aged 71 y. 10 m. 11 d. In March, 1913, he was united in marriage to Mina Eby. Surviving are his wife, one son (Glen, Waterloo, Ont.), and 2 grandchildren. One sister (Mrs. David Bearinger) preceded him in death in 1945. He accepted Christ as his Saviour in youth and was a faithful member of the Erb Street Mennonite Church. Funeral services were held at the Erb Street Church, Waterloo, Ont., in charge of J. B. Bearinger. - Elvina, daughter of the late Josiah and Sophiana Shantz, was born Oct. 5, 1890; passed away Aug. 1, 1945; aged 54 y. 9 m. 26 d. On Feb. 11, 1913, she was united in marriage to David M. Bearinger. Surviving are her husband, 2 sons (Urias, Kitchener, Ont.; and Vernon, at home), 3 daughters (Vera - Mrs. Delton Martin, Elmira, Ont.; Almeda - Mrs. Leonard Snider, of Kitchener; and Doris, at home), and one brother (Alvin, Waterloo, Ont.). Her death came as a shock to the family and friends, as she had been in fairly good health. On the evening of Aug. 1 she suffered a stroke and passed away several hours later. She was a faithful member of the Weber Mennonite Church. Funeral services were held Aug. 4 at the East End Mennonite Church, Kitchener, in charge of Simon B. Martin and Benjamin Shantz. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

His first wife, the former Susannah Horst, died in 1945. In July, 1949, he married Marian Bowman, who survives. The body is at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira, until 10 a.m. Friday. A private service will be conducted at his residence at 2: 30 p.m. Friday.
