Moses Reist Sr.

Moses was a real character and a real Christian of the Mennonite faith. I walked up one time and got a feeling about his Schreitz [?] factory which really was something to see. Also the old story about Moses going to the Waterloo Park for a stroll, when he came to the terraces at the top, a bunch of girls were below and when they seen him they said Holy Moses and Moses took that to heart and wrote a book claiming he was the second Moses. Now there must be some truth in this because my mother bought a book from him. It was printed in German and named Die Goldene Bible. Where the book got too I don't know but there are some around. Also he had ideas about the Maple Syrup and [was] the first one to collect sap instead of walking tree to tree. He purchased some eavetrough to run the sap to one location. I believe this was the forerunner of what they are doing now with plastic pipes. Dad and Moses had many a chat in the old tinshop.

MRS. AMANDA EBY

Mrs. Amanda Eby of Elmira passed away at her home here on Monday, Jan. 8. Deceased, who before her marriage to Josiah Eby, who predeaceased her ten years ago, was the former Miss Amanda Reist.

Surviving are four sons, Moses of Elmira, Isaiah of Elmira, Menno of St. Jacobs, and Samuel of Yatton, and one daughter Persida, Mrs. Isaiah Martin of Heidelberg.

The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon from her late residence at 1.30 o'clock. Rev. John Bowman officiated. Interment took place in the Elmira Mennonite Cemetery.

She accepted Christ as her personal Saviour in her youth. She was a faithful and devoted member of the Church and a regular attendant and worshiper at the Erb Street Mennonite Church, Waterloo. "Blesse dare the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth, yea saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours, and their works do follow them". Lichty. --- Sarah Ann, daughter of the late Jacob E. and Rachel Reist, was born in Woolwich, Ont., June 11, 1874; passed away at the Kitchener and Waterloo Hospital, March 13, 1950; aged 75 y. 9 m. 2 d. Her husband (Benjamin W. Lichty) preceded her in death thirteen years ago. She is survived by one daughter (Iva-Mrs. Arthur Baker), one brother (Jacob H. Reist), and 4 grandchildren. One daughter (Mary) died in infancy. She was a member of the First Mennonite Church and had a quiet Christian demeanor, a gentle kindly disposition, and was loved and respected by all who knew her. The funeral took place at the First Mennonite Church, with the pastors in charge. C.F. Derstine brought a message of comfort. The body was buried in the cemetery adjoining the church.

Mrs. Magdalena Bauman, widow of Elias Bauman, died at her home at Kantz Sunday morning from the effects of a paralytic stroke.

Mrs. Bauman was born January 5. 1850, and was aged 79 years. She was a native of Canada and came to Sny- der county with Mr. Bauman many years ago.

Surviving are a daughter, Miss Mary. at home, and a son. Moses Bauman, of California, and also a sister, who resides in Canada
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon and interment was in the Stauffer's Mennonite cemetery al Stauffer's Church, near Fort Trevorton.

JONAS RIEST

St. Jacobs, Jan. 12. The funeral of the late Mr. Jonas Riest was held yesterday afternoon from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Eli Brubacher. A memorial service was held at the Conestogo River Mennonite church where a large congregation of mourners heard two addresses. Bishop Daniel Brubacher of Petoskey, Mich., took as his text Luke 16, 23-30 while the pastor, Bishop Urias Martin spoke on 2 Cor. 5, 1-3. Following the service interment was made in the adjoining burial ground.

Jonas Riest a well known citizen of the village passed away Tuesday evening, Jan. 8 at the House of Refuge in Kitchener.

The late Mr. Riest who was born In Alboro Township, Huron County had reached the ripe old age of 73 and was in excellent health until two weeks ago when he became ill while visiting with friends in the district.

At 17 he set out to see the world. After marrying Barbara Ernest he settled down in Michigan where he farmed for several years and later spent several years in the West before coming back to this district. In late years, after the death of his wife in 1922, he again answered the call of travel and visited Mexico and the Pacific Coast leaving a host of friends across the continent who mourn his loss.

He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Riest and leaves to mourn his loss two daughters, Mrs. Marion Roush of Ithaca, Mich., and Miss Leah Riest of Lansing. Mich, one son Samuel also of Lansing. Mich. One sister at Mount Bridges and a brother at Sheridan, Oregon also survive.

McDONALD WOMAN DIES

Mrs. Caroline Krogel, 66, died Monday at her home near McDonald, after an illness of several years. She was born in Bangor, June 20, 1870, and spent her life in that community. Surviving her are her husband, Gottlieb Krogel, four sons, five daughters, 25 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral rites for her will be held Thursday morning, at 10 at Sherrod's chapel in Bangor, with burial in Arlington Hill cemetery.

Beloved wife of the late Menno B. Brubacher (April 1976). Dear mother of Cleason and Joan of Elmira, Cleon and Mary of Brussels, Abner and Mary Irene of Milverton, Edna and Ray Bauman of Listowel, Sid and Martha of Elmira, Selema and Wayne G. Martin of Elmira, Emanuel and Mary Ellen of Elmira, Amzie and Doris of Cambridge, Aden and Jan of Elmira, Henry and Elsie of Elmira, Rebecca and Richard Bauman of Elora. Also survived by 26 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. Sister of Mrs. Elvina Martin of RR 2, Wallenstein, Samuel and Elmeda Martin of Stratford, Emmanuel Martin and Menno R. and MaryAnn Martin of
Cambridge.

Predeceased by one daughter-in-law, Mabel; three grandsons, James, Rodney and Shawn; four sisters and one brother.

Friends may call at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira, where the fam- ily will receive friends today (Wednesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A family service will be held in the chapel on Thursday at 1 p.m., then to the Elmira Mennonite Meeting House for further public service and burial in the adjoining cemetery.

TWO KITCHENER LADS DROWNED IN BRESLAU DAM

Punt Upsets and Layerne Snyder of Detroit and Franklyn Bossenbury of Kitchener Lose Their Lives-Attempt at Rescue Proves Futile-Used Lungmotor.

Two Kitchener lads, Laverne Snider, aged 10 years, son of Mr. and Mrs Ivan Snider of Detroit and Franklyn Bossenberry, aged about 12 years, son of Mr and Mrs Frank Bossenberry of 20 Mitchell Ave, Kitchener, met a tragic death when they were drowned at the Breslau dam on Monday afternoon. Their punt upset and efforts to effect their rescue proved fruitless. Another boy. Howard Weber of 153 Queen St., South, son of Mr and Mrs J. Weber, who accompanied the other boys was not in the boat at the time.

The boys left Kitchener shortly after two o'clock on a fishing expedition. The three boys after their arrival at the dam found a punt in a clump of willows near the flood gates and young Weber after going for a short trip about the pond returned and Snider and Bossenberry got into the boat. They had left their bait near the bridge and stated they were going to get it. Shortly after young Weber, who was cutting a pole in the willows heard Mervin Cressman, aged 8, calling to him that the punt had capsized and he immediately notified the man at the garage nearby. Knowing the lads could not swim, Jacob Rudy, and E S. Eby of the garage responded quickly and waded into the water in an effort to rescue them They got about 40 feet from shore but found it impossible to go further on account of the mud. In the meantime Oscar Williams of Kitchener came along over the bridge in his motor car, and being informed of the accident, he immediately removed his clothes and jumped in to the rescue. In a short time he recovered the body of Bossenberry, which was taken to the garage. He then went in search of Snider's body. Bossenberry appeared to be alive, according to Eby, when he was carried into the garage. Dr. L. R. Shields and Dr. Hagmeier, together with Fire Chief Guerin, arrived on the scene about ten minutes after the body was rescued. The lung motor was used for about half an hour, but life was extinct.

The body of Snider was found in about an hour, after about two feet of water had been let out of the dam, George Reinhart of Breslau, rescuing the body near the spot where Mr. Williams found the body of Bossenberry.

After the arrival of Coroner Lackner a jury was empannelled, who viewed the remains, after which they were removed to Schreiter's under taking parlors.

The young Snider lad was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Snider. The lad Bossenberry leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bossenberry, six brothers and three sisters, viz, Charles, Clayton, Emerson, Claude, Bert, Glenn, Mrs. Ivan Sat der, Mrs. C. R. Keyes, Toronto, and Zelda at home.

The deepest sympathy of the community will go out to the families the who have been so suddenly and tragically bereaved.

The celebrants have eight children; Melvin of Waterloo, Helen of Kitchener, Lincoln of Hawkesville, Jeanne of Newville, Pa., Stanley of Baden, Ralph of Burbank, Calif., Lorne of Calgary, Alta., and Kenneth of Vancouver, B.C. There are 29 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Snyder were farmers and butchers in the Mannheim area for 32 years. They attended the Kitchener, Farmers Market from 1919 to 1955. They have special interest in woodworking, reading, painting and flowers.

SNYDER, Mrs. Rachel Ann - Of 18 Queen St., Baden, died after a lengthy illness, on Monday, July 2, 1984, at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener. She was born 86 years ago, daughter of the late William Rudy and Rachel Reist.

She was a member of Mannheim Mennonite Church, where she was a member of the WMSC and was also a member of the Baden Senior Citizen's.

Beloved wife of Percy Snyder, whom she married June 4, 1919; lovingly remembered by her sons, Mel- vin and his wife Annabelle of Erbsville, Lincoln and his wife Ann of Hawkesville, Stanley and his wife Jacqueline of Baden, Ralph and his wife Ruth of Burbank, Calif., Lorne and his wife Doris of Calgary, Alta.. Kenneth of Vancouver, B.C.; her daughters, Helen (Mrs. Carl Grenzebach) of Kitchener, Jeanne (Mrs. Lorne Lichty) of Mercersburg, Pa.; dear sister of Jacob of Cambridge and Abner of Waterloo.

Dear mother of Myrtle (Mrs. Russell Oberer) of Kitchener, Ruth (Mrs. Howard Bauman) of Waterloo, Howard of Waterloo, and Raymond of Kitchener; twin sister of Rachael (Mrs. Percy Snyder) of Baden, sister of Jacob Rudy of Cambridge, and Abner Rudy of New Hamburg; also survived by nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Predeceased by her husband, Almer, on January 5, 1970; one son, Clifford, and his two children, Kevin and Karen, in 1969; one brother, Omar Rudy, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Bechtel and Mrs. Martha Thaler. RUDY, Abner-Peacefully, at his residence, Nithview Home, New Hamburg. Abner Rudy, who had farmed at RR 2, Baden, prior to retiring.
He was born in Waterloo 94 years ago, a son of the late William and Rachel (Reist) Rudy. He was a member of the Wilmot Mennonite Church, RR 2, New Hamburg (Bleams Rd.) where he had served as a trustee. Abner had been Chairman of the Board of the former SS #12, Wilmot Township Public School and enjoyed wood carving, fishing and walking as his hobbies.


He was predeceased by his first wife, Edith (Snyder) in 1975 and his second wife, Alice (Kirschner) in 1984.

Loving father of Carl and Ruth of Colorado, John and Catherine of New Hamburg, Betty and Don Buschert of Kitchener, Willis and Susan of Etobicoke, Elvin of RR 2, Baden, Doreen and Dale Good of Exeter, Karen and Ed Bergey of Brampton, Harold and Genny of RR 2, Baden, Barbara and Art Stager of Kitchener. Also missed by a step-daughter, Barbara and Bob Stumpf of Kitchener; two daughters-in- law, Elizabeth Rudy of Kitchener and Dorene Rudy of New Hamburg. Lovingly remembered by 26 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Abram Reist: minister of the Clearwater Mennonite Church at Reist, near Youngstown, Alberta, the West Zion Mennonite Church near Carstairs, Alberta, and the Mount Calvary Mennonite Church at Westward Ho, Alberta, was born on 2 December 1893 near May City, Iowa, and died at Carstairs 28 August 1984. He married Alma Snider in 1918. They were the parents of four daughters and one son.
Abram Reist's family moved from May City, Iowa, to South Haven, Michigan in 1893, and then, six years later, to northern Michigan. In 1910 the family moved again, this time to a new region of the Canadian prairies near a new railway being built from Saskatoon to Calgary. They, with a small group of friends and relatives, established the new community of Reist, located near Clearwater Lake about ten kilometers north of the nearest railway shipping point at Youngstown, Alberta. The group did not have a minister, but began a Sunday School and organized itself as a new Mennonite congregation named the Clearwater Mennonite Church.

In the summer of 1914 Abram Reist found work on a farm in the Didsbury area, and began to attend the Sunday School and worship services of the West Zion Mennonite Church. Here he was converted and baptized, but then returned to Reist/Youngstown. In 1918 he visited his former home in Michigan where he married Alma Snider who accompanied him back to Reist/Youngstown. He was ordained on 26 May 1919 as a minister in the Clearwater congregation.

The Mennonite settlement at Reist/Youngstown broke up in 1924, due to prolonged drought. Abram and Alma Reist moved first to the High River area where they rented a farm, but after a year they relocated to the Carstairs area to serve the West Zion congregation during a time when their pastor, Henry J. Harder, was away. Reist continued to serve as Harder's assistant until 1948 when he took over the leadership of the Mount Calvary Mennonite Church at Westward Ho. He continued to serve there until his retirement in the mid-1960s when the Reists again returned to Carstairs where they lived until his death in 1984 and her death three years later.

Reist.- Joel, son of Elias and Annie (Auker) Reist, was born in South Haven, Mich., Nov. 13, 1895; died of cancer at Linden, Alta., Aug. 9, 1983; aged 87 y. On July 27, 1921, he was married to Vera Good, who survives. Also surviving are 3 daughters (Helen Spicer, Dorothy Fretz, and Mildred Rendle), one son (Roy), 19 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, one sister (Leah Reinbold), and one brother (Abe). One daughter and one son preceded him in death. He was a member of West Zion Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held on Aug. 12, in charge of Ormond Sherick and Gordon Buschert; interment in West Zion Cemetery.
