BUTLER, John "Howard" 1926 - 2016 After a short illness, on November 13 at the age of 90. He leaves his wife Miriam (Shantz), son John (Jackie Bryers) and daughters Mary and Jane (Phil Dietrich) and his beloved grandchildren Jack and Peter Butler, and Scott and Amy Dietrich. He also leaves behind his sister-in-law Vera Butler and many adoring nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews, and great-grandnieces and nephews from both the Butler and Shantz clans. Howard was born on February 23, 1926, the third of four sons of Leigh Elkington Butler and Jean Barber and the much loved nephew of Margaret Lemon. His brothers Keith, Bill and Alan predeceased him, as did sisters-in-law Bev and Pat and brothers-in-law Fred and Hugh Shantz. Howard grew up in Kitchener, attended high school at KCI and served in the RCAF for the latter part of WW2. He then obtained a Pharmacy degree at University of Toronto before undertaking a highly successful forty year plus career in the pharmaceutical industry, primarily as a representative for Wyeth (now Pfizer). After retirement he continued to work until age 85 as a part-time pharmacist with Shoppers Drug Mart. He was a gifted athlete, playing badminton from an early age into his late forties (and then squash for a further twenty years), football and basketball in high school, and golf from his early twenties and for the rest of his life. His badminton achievements were notable, including winning the US Open Masters singles title in 1967. To recognize his sporting achievements, he was made a member of the Waterloo Region Hall of Fame. Howard was also a 70 year member of Westmount Golf and Country Club. He was a kind, gracious, sociable and gentle man who will be deeply missed by his extended family and all others who had the privilege of knowing him. Butler-Shantz Wedding Is Garden Ceremony

Rev. U. K. Weber who officiated at the marriage of the bride's parents 30 years ago, performed the wedding of his niece, Miss Miriam Rose Shantz, and Mr. John Howard Butler Saturday in a lovely garden setting. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elven Shantz, 205 Weber St. East, and the bridegroom is a son of Mrs. L. E. Butler, 637 King St. West, and the late Mr. Butler. Rev. Mr. Weber is honorary pastor of Stirling Ave. Mennonite Church. Their vows were spoken in an outdoor ceremony at the home of the bride's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Shantz, 215 Pandora Cresc. The bridal party stood before an alter, flanked by twin white standards of white peonies, arranged at one end of the garden which was ringed with an orange blossom hedge. Miss Frances Trump was pian- ist, playing the accompaniment for soloist Miss Isabelle M. Chivers. Her selections were "O Perfect Love" and "The Voice That Breathed O'er Eden." Entering the garden with her father, who gave her in marriage, the bride chose a summer bridal gown of flimy white nylon mar- quisette. O Peter Pan collar and cap sleeves featured the bodice. The tightly-molded waistline was clasped with a wide sash of white nylon, finished at the back with a butterfly bow. The skirt billowed to the ground in great fullness. Her finger-tip veil of white illusion tulle fell from a Mary Tudor brim of illusion and her bouquet was a white starlite rose cascade centred with gardenias. The handkerchief of fine Belgian lace which she carried had been brought from Europe in 1918 by the bridegroom's father as a gift for his wife. All in white organdy were four bridal attendants, Miss Patricia Shantz as her sister's maid of honor, Mrs. James A. Smith of Toronto and Miss Peggy Houston of Kitchener as bridesmaids and Miss Patty Butler, Kitchener, niece of the bridegroom, as flower girl. The senior attendants were dressed alike in bouffant-skirted white organdy gowns with portrait necklines, edged with a double fold of self material forming brief sleeves and finished in points on the fitted bodice. A single red rose was attached to their necklets of black velvet ribbon and their large picture hats of white organdy were trimmed wth black velvet ribbon. They carried white baskets of Italian straw filled with American beauty roses and bouvardia. Similar to the bride's was the flower girl's gown, patterned with Peter Pan Collar, but with puffed sleeves and flower clusters appliqued in twin rows around the skirt. She carried a small Italian basket of pink Pinocchio roses. Mr. Alan Butler was his brother's best man. Ushers were Mr. Hugh Shantz, brother of the bride, Mr. William L. Butler, also a brother of the bridegroom, and Mr. Robert Fleischauer, Jr. A reception followed in the garden. For her daughter's wedding, Mrs. Elven Shantz wore a rose crepe floor-length gown, hat of navy straw adorned with roses, navy accessories and a corsage of white carnations with blue gypsophila. Mrs. Butler chose a crisp pink summer formal gown in waffle weave, with straw hat and accessories. Her corsage mingled pink gypsophila with white carnations. Receiving with the wedding party, Mrs. M. B. Shantz was in floor-length grap angelskin silk, navy straw picture hat, navy accessories and a corsage of American beauty roses. When they left for Muskoka, the bride donned a three-piece ensemble in pastel aqua gabardine, worn with a two-tone cocoa and beige hat and accessories, and a gardenia corsage. Mr. and Mrs. Butler will reside on Union Blvd., Waterloo.
