    • Linwood Soldier Killed in Action

Mr. and Mrs. Crookshanks received the sad news on Saturday evening of the death of their son, Adam. It was a shock to the whole community as he was a noble young man and was well known. He was born in 1893, was a member of the Methodist Church and was vice-President of the Epworth league, and a member of the Orange Lodge. He left home to enlist on October 17th, 1914, and trained in London. He left Halifax for overseas April 18, 1915 and went into the trenches Sept. 25th, 1915, and was killed Sept. 16, 1916. Deepest sympathy is felt for the bereaved family. Below follows a letter from one of his comrades: -

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Crookshanks: - I have very sad news to tell you. Your son was killed in action on the 16th of September and all the snipers send their deepest sympathy to you. Your son died a soldier of the Cross and a man and he was well loved in the Battalion. He was one of the oldest members in the 88th Battalion and we miss him very much. Your son and I were snipers together ever since we landed in France and I miss him more than anyone else in the battalion does. I am sorry to say that I wasn't allowed to go into the trenches this last time when your son was killed. It was the first time we had been separated, since we had been in France, and then to lose him. they couldn't fetch his body out as the gun fire was too heavy, so they buried him just where he was killed. We took the ring off his finger, and some of his personal things to send to you. I gave W. Jones everything belonging to hour son to send to you and I hope that you will receive them safely. I wish this dreadful war would soon be over, and I again send you my deepest sympathy. This is my address if you care to write. R. N. Siddle, 54309
