  Doon Pioneer Village, now Doon Heritage Crossroads, is a monument to the memory of Dr. A.E. Broome, a Kitchener physician and radiologist who conceived the idea while visiting a pioneer community near Arnhem in Holland. He spent countless hours visiting curators of similar museums in the USA, promoting the idea, raising funds and forming a board that eventually acquired land. The first buildings were brought to the site before ill health forced his retirement. Dr. Broome, who was born in Renfrew, had taught school in Saskatchewan before entering Queen's University. His education was interrupted by service with an Army Medical Corps during World War I. Contracting tuberculosis while overseas, he returned to Canada, continued his medical studies while an ambulant patient in the Kingston Sanitarium, and graduated from Queen's in 1919. He served at Petawawa and Chorley Park Military Hospitals during World War II and was awarded a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal for his outstanding work. Waterloo Region Hall of Fame _____________________________ BROOME, ALBERT ERNEST (DUSTY), was born in Renfrew in 1895, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Broome. After his preliminary education he became a teacher in Saskatchewan prior to entering the Medical Faculty at Queen's University. On the outbreak of war he enlisted in the army medical corps, and during his service overseas contracted tuberculosis. In 1918 he was invalided back to Canada and while a patient at Mowat Sanatorium completed his medical education, graduating in 1919. He spent some time at Saranac Lake Sanatorium as a patient and as a student, then at Byron Sanatorium London where he did chest work and radiology. Finally after working at Calydor, Muskoka, he went to Chicago where he studied general radiology. He settled in Guelph after completing his postgraduate work, and while there became associated with the radiology department of the Ontario Veterinary College. He maintained this relationship after moving to Kitchener where, in 1933, he opened an office for the private practice of radiology at 66 Queen Street North. Among his medical activities he served as president and then honorary member of the K-W Academy of Medicine, Honorary Fellow of the American College of Radiologists, and executive member and later archivist for the Canadian Association of Radiologists, for which body he published a number of scientific papers, curing World War 11 he served as radiologist at Petawawa and Chorley Park Military Hospitals. Besides his professional interests he was involved in community matters, such as the K-W Figure Skating Club, but his chief memorial is in the Doon Pioneer Village. The concept was his after viewing a similar type of establishment in Holland, and his was the drive and enthusiasm which brought it into being. In recognition of his efforts he was named the first citizen of the Village in 1961. On December 1, 1962 he died at his residence at the age of 67 years, being survived by his widow and a son.
