- COL. A. REID "SPEEDY" OLIVER
The sports' achievements of A. Reid "Speedy" Oliver are legend in the Cambridge area. He was catcher for the Galt Terriers who won the Inter-County Senior Baseball championships fourteen times. He was also a fine junior hockey player, gaining his nickname in this sport.
He went overseas with the 11th Battalion as a signals' officer in the First World War and later served with the Royal Flying Corps in France.
On his return to Canada he became commanding officer of the 2nd Infantry Brigade, Highland Light Infantry. During the Second World War he was in command of the HLI Reserve Battalion, attaining the rank of colonel. He later commanded the 2nd Infantry Brigade, became honorary lieutenant-colonel of the regiment and was awarded the Volunteer Decoration Medal.

OLIVER, A. Reid
On Friday, Feb. 5, 1988, at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, in his 92nd year. Reid Oliver, formerly of James St., Galt, was the husband of the late, Marion C. Wilkinson. Dear father of Dorothy (Mrs. Jack Brown) of Cambridge; dear grandfather of four and great-grandfather of three. Predeceased by two sisters, Mary and Elsie. Mr. Oliver was a member of Knox Galt Presbyterian Church, the Alma Lodge, AF and AM and the Galt Legion, Branch 121. He served over-seas in the First World War with the 111th Battalion in England and transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. He commanded the Highland Light Infantry from 1934-1938 and the Second Infantry Brigade from 1938-1942. He was active for many years in local baseball and hockey. He was a former alderman in Galt and served on the Galt School Board of Education. He was employed with R. McDougall Co. Ltd., as an executive, retiring in 1960 after 47 years. There will be no visitation. A private family service will be held at T. Little & Son Funeral Home, 223 Main St. E., Cambridge. Cremation has taken place with entombment of ashes, in Mount View Mausoleum.
