  • Notes
    • Charlie and Clara adopted a daughter, Mary (I believe Mary Margaret). She was born in 1941. I knew Mary when I was growing up and I believe that she settled in either the Kingston or Montreal area where she married and had one son who tragically predeceased her.

      Charles A. Bain Passes

The community was deeply grieved on Wednesday last by the death of one of its best-known and most popular residents, Charles A. Bain, who passed away in the K-W Hospital after an illness of several weeks. He was 65 years of age. He was born near Caledonia, a son of the late William R. Bain and Sarah Jane Abbey, and came with the family to Ayr 60 years ago. He learned the blacksmith trade with the late John Anderson in the blacksmith shop in downtown Ayr now operated as Art's Body & Fender. More than 40 years ago he went to the John Watson Mfg. Co. Ltd., where he remained until his untimely demise. He became head of the welding department, a position he held until four years ago when he was transferred to the sales division. His ability as a sales representative was held in high esteem by company officials. During World War I Mr. Bain enlisted with a Royal Canadian Artillery battery from Guelph. In his younger years he was an outstanding hockey player, performing as a defence man for many of the fine Ayr OHA and rural teams down through the years. He was a member of the 1921 Ayr club which had that controversial series with Galt in the ORA play downs, Galt later in the season winning the Provincial championship. He retained his interest in local hockey, and indeed all Ayr sports, during his entire lifetime. He assisted in the operation of several Ayr teams in later years, and took an active part in the campaign to construct the Ayr Community Centre. Mr. Bain later served in various capacities on the Community Centre Board. He was a popular figure in Ayr's social circle, where his native good nature and ready wit meant much to the success of many events. He was a prominent lawn bowler and was affiliated with Ayr Masonic Lodge. Mr. Bain was a valued member and regular attendant of Knox United Church. Surviving are his wife, the former Jean MacGregor; a daughter, Mary, who is a student at Queen's University, Kingston; one sister, Mrs. C. B. Farnham (Minnie) of Hamilton, and two brothers, William of Wingham and Robert of Toronto. He was predeceased by his first wife, Clara Forbes, and a brother, Alex of Montreal.

      The Funeral

Funeral service was held Saturday afternoon at Knox United Church, conducted by Rev. W. J. V. Buchanan. The large attendance bore testimony to the esteem in which Mr. Bain was held in the community. Interment was made in Ayr Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Warren Vincent, Arthur Underwood, Wallace Gillespie, John Page, Milton Hill and Robert Lovett. On Friday evening members of Ayr Masonic Lodge held a memorial service at the Coutts Funeral Home, Galt.
