  Mrs. A. C. Gillies Passes - A respected resident of Ayr for more than half a century, Mrs. Alexander C. Gillies died at the Paris Nursing Home on Tuesday, in her 90th year. The former Emily Frances Thorne, she was born at Edville (near Brighton, Ont.) on July 4, 1863, a daughter of the late John and Nancy Thorne. Following her marriage on August 30, 1893, the couple moved to Ayr, where Mr. Gillies established a drug store in what is now the W. O. Ball Funeral Parlor. In later years, the business was transferred to the store now operated as Toye's Pharmacy. During the 55 years the business was carried on under this well-known name, Mrs. Gillies assisted in the store, where her cheerful disposition won her many warm friends. Always interested in natural beauty, Mrs. Gillies took a prominent, part in the establishment of the trout, pond and rock gardens at the Ayr Garage, which was a feature of the village when the garage was owned by Mr. Gillies and John T. Gillies. She was a member of Stanley St. Presbyterian Church and, following church union, of Knox United Church, where she was honored years ago with a life membership in the Women's Missionary Society. Following the death of her husband in 1948, Mrs. Gillies took up residence at the Paris Nursing Home, where she was quite active until this spring. Surviving are one son, John T. of Ayr, a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter. Funeral service will be held from the W. O. Ball Funeral Parlor on Thursday at 2: 30 p.m. with interment in Ayr Cemetery. The Ayr News May 28 1953 pg 17
