    • PRESTON YOUTH OF 20 PASSES IN AMBULANCE FOLLOWING COLLISION BETWEEN TWO TRUCKS NEAR ACTON

Sustained Severe Head Injuries in Accident Saturday Night.

      MAKING DELIVERY

His Companion and Driver of Other Truck Only Slightly Hurt.

Ernest Lynn Baines, 20, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert O. Baines. 132 Francis street, Preston, died in an ambulance enroute to the Guelph hospital at 9:40 Saturday night from severe head injuries sustained in an accident one-third mile west of Acton in which two trucks figured in collision. Well known in Preston, the accident victim had celebrated his 20th birthday on April 1.

Baines who was employed by the Groh Cooler in the capacity of a refrigeration mechanic was driving a light truck toward Action with a special delivery. The fatal accident occurred one-third of a mile west of Action on highway No. 7. John Runstedler, 16, of Preston, who was a passenger in the Groh truck, escaped without injury while Ernest Sigsworth of Action, alleged driver of the other truck, was only slightly hurt.

Particulars regarding the accident were given The Reporter by Provincial Police Constable Edward Howell of Guelph, who was in charge of the investigation. No charge has been laid against Sigsworth, he reported.

An inquest has been ordered by Coroner Dr. McNiven of Action and will be held in Acton Thursday, April 15, at 8 p.m.

According to police information Baines was proceeding west toward Acton when his light truck and a heavier vehicle driven by Ernest Sigsworth and owned by Chester McBain of Acton, side-swiped. The cab of the local truck it was reported received the brunt of the impact from the side racks of the Sigsworth-driven machine. The impact completely wrecked the cab of the local truck, propelling the machine into the ditch.

The late Mr. Baines received the force of the impact. He suffered severe head injuries and was unconscious when removed from the machine. Runstedler, sitting beside the local driver, was uninjured.

Born in Galt, the accident victim resided in Preston practically all his life. He received his elementary education at the Central public school where he was awarded an entrance scholarship, and continued his secondary education at the Galt collegiate where he received his junior matriculation. He had been employed with the Groh Cooler for the past four years.

A member of the local boys' band the deceased was also studying the violin. He was an adherent of Knox Presbyterian church and a member of the Sunday school class, Young People's Christian Endeavor and the Young Men's Bible class.

Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bert C. Baines, Preston; two brothers, Walter and Harry, Preston; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Baines, Galt.

The funeral will be held from the residence of his parents on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. Interment will be made in Trinity cemetery, Galt.
