    • Former owner of CKPC, Mrs. F. M. Buchanan dies

Florence M. Buchanan, well-known for her work in community organizations and the former owner and president of Radio Station CKPC, was buried today in Parklawn Cemetery in Cambridge (Preston). Mrs. Buchanan died Thursday at her home at 20 Oakley Road. A private family funeral service was conducted at her home today. "Mrs. B" as she was familiarly known to many, was the only woman in Canada and the United States, to own and operate a 10,000 watt AM and FM radio station. The station was founded in Preston, in 1923, by her father, Cyrus Dolph, with a capacity of 50 watts AM. The station was moved to Brantford in the early '30s and several years later Mrs. Buchanan took over its operation. By the time she retired in.1973, with the purchase of the station by her son, Richard, who became president and general manager, CKPC had grown to 10,000 watts. Mrs. Buchanan's achievements, awards and service in the city covered nearly all aspects of community involvement. She was an active member of more than 25 organizations and service clubs and was a life member of 11, including the Canadian Cancer Society, of which she was the founder and first president of the Brant County unit; the Canadian Girl Guide Association from which she received several awards; Red Cross Society, Victorian Order of Nurses; Brant County Children's Aid Society; Zonta International; the Provincial Council of Women and others. Mrs. Buchanan, 75, also was involved in the Community Welfare Council; the Glenhyrst Gardens Commission and arts council and the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews. She also was a director of both the Big Brothers and Big Sisters organizations in Brantford. In 1960, Mrs. Buchanan was named citizen-of-the-Year, by Brantford Ovitan Club. She had received many awards, among them a Centennial Medal in recognition of valuable service to the nation on the occasion of Canada's Centennial. Mrs. Buchanan also received the Queen's Medal 1952-1977, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's reign and the Mohawk College plaque, acknowledging service and leadership in the establishment of educational programs for Brant County. In October, 1979, she received a citizenship award from the Canadian Commission for 1979-the International Year of the Child. Mrs. Buchanan helped in numerous community projects including the establishment of a campsite at Paris for the Brantford brownies and the Boys Band building on Marlborough Street. In addition to her son, Richard, Mrs. Buchanan is survived by a daughter, Judith, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

      _____________________

CKPC first went on the air in 1923 in the town of Preston when Mr. Wallace Russ and two of his radio "ham" friends, Tom Mead of and Charles Bonner of Galt were experimenting with a low-powered radio transmitter......

Around 1934 the Canadian Government informed all of the "10" prefix Amateur Broadcasters that they must go full Commercial or sign off. 10BQ decided to sign off and slip into history.

By this time, Cyrus Dolph's daughter, Mrs. F.M. Buchanan had assumed management and the station moved again in 1951 to an elegant old home at 525 Colborne Street at Rawdon. With a 1,000 watt signal having been approved 6 years earlier, CKPC was now being heard over a much wider area. The transmitter now operated from a location on the Cockshut Road then at the edge of Brantford.
