  • Notes
    • Frederick (Fred) Alexis Ripley

Aged 91, Fred passed away peacefully at 2:00 a.m. at St. Mary's General Hospital. He had been battling dementia and its challenges for some time.

He was survived by Alice, his wife of 66 years. Father of Ron (Marlene) and Mary Ellen (David), and grandfather of Kristin, Hart (Jessica), Caitlin (Tim), Lara (Gerry), and Emmett. Great-grandfather of Isla and Will.

Fred was also survived by his sister Grace Carlton and her family. He was pre-deceased by his younger brother Royce Allison Ripley, PTE 4th Princess Louise Dragoon Guards, KIA Italy, 1944.

Fred grew up roaming his beloved woods and waterways around Chignecto, Maccan, and Springhill N.S. He volunteered for the Canadian Forces in WWII and saw service through the Falaise Campaign and Belgium as well as the liberation of the Netherlands where he spent time after VE day as a member of the reconstruction force.

Fred and Alice were married in 1948 before he went overseas again during the Korean Conflict. He remained in the Canadian Forces for 27 years and developed a broad portfolio in a number of trades that he practiced with calm and meticulous dedication, always learning, and always teaching and sharing with his peers and family.

Fred and Alice moved to Kitchener, Ontario in 1968 and he worked in the Electronics Industry with Marsland Engineering until he retired.

He and Alice were able to enjoy their home and family and community life for a wonderful length of time together and their love and examples and lessons and unwavering support helped all to grow and go forward. Fred took great joy and comfort from the adventures and successes of all of his children and grand-children, and most especially during the last challenging times from his great-grandchildren Isla and Will…. they were his treasures. He will be remembered for a life well lived, and a life of service and dedication to his country and his family.

Fred's family received relatives and friends at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467 on Saturday, May 16, 2015 from 10:00 - 10:45 a.m. The funeral service was held in the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m. followed by a reception.
