  2 people charged in relation to shooting death of Irshad Sabriye in Kitchener Sabriye, 20, was found dead by officers on an Highway 7/8 on-ramp in November 2019 Two people have been charged in the shooting death of a man in Kitchener last November. Irshad Sabriye, 20, was found dead on an Highway 7/8 on-ramp just after 2 a.m. on Nov. 26, 2019. Police responded after hearing gunshots in the area of Courtland Avenue and Highway 7/8. Waterloo regional police say a post-mortem has determined Sabriye died of gunshot wounds. A 24-year-old man from Kitchener has been charged with manslaughter and arson, while a 20-year-old man from Kitchener has been charged with accessory after the fact and arson. "This investigation has been challenging," police Chief Bryan Larkin told a press conference Friday afternoon, saying there is a "culture of silence" around gun violence. He says witnesses are often unwilling to come forward and provide information, evidence or witness statements because of their own fear. He added Sabriye knew the people who have been charged and the shooting was likely linked to "street activity." Larkin says the investigation is still open and ongoing. Sabriye's family issued a statement after his death that they were "shocked and heartbroken that we have lost a son, a brother, and a friend." "It hurts us more to witness that Irshad was taken away from us with such violent and inhumane way," the statement said, urging anyone with information to come forward. Drug and firearm charges Last month, police canvassed the area of Vanier Drive as part of the investigation. As part of search warrants related to the investigation, police have charged a 20-year-old from Cambridge and a 21-year-old from Waterloo with firearm and drug offences.
