      Cambridge Times 24 Dec 2013

CAMBRIDGE, Jose Brasil was a hard working, self-made family man who enjoyed teaching his youngest grandson the joys of soccer, his youngest daughter says. Brasil, 79, died over Thursday's supper hour, when he was hit by a car near the St. Jacobs Farmers' Market. He was trying to get his car out of the median ditch of Arthur Street when he stepped onto the road. Diane remembers how her dad always encouraged her to succeed at whatever she did. "It was just he always wanted us to strive for better, to have an education like my parents never had," she said at her dad's Ferguson Avenue home in Cambridge. Jose and Fernanda, his wife of 46 years, emigrated from Portugal 40 years ago. First, they went to British Columbia, where his sister lived. A year later, the couple moved to Cambridge, where his brother lived. A skilled bricklayer, he worked for Kappeler Masonry in St. Jacobs. He retired 20 years ago. The hard, outdoor work left him with health issues in retirement, leading him to eventually give up his love for gardening, Diane said. Delia is Diane's older sister, who has two boys: Gabriel, seven, and Samuel, two-and-a-half. Jose and Fernanda babysat Samuel several times a week, giving grandfather lots of time play with Samuel, often with toy soccer balls. Jose wasn't a soccer player, but he was a lifelong fan of the Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon, Diane said. "He even had a 2014 pocket calendar with him from Sporting." Diane remembers how her father cultivated circles of close friends, in places like the indoor walking club at Cambridge Centre or regularly playing cards at the Portuguese association on Oxford Street. The family will receive friends on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Corbett Funeral Home on Dundas Street in Cambridge. The funeral is set for Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, 53 Wellington St., Cambridge, with burial to follow at Parklawn Cemetery. Waterloo Regional Police continue to investigate how the collision happened along northbound Arthur Street (former Highway 85), about 500 metres north of the King Street North interchange. Brasil tried to make a U-turn and his car became stuck in the median ditch, said Staff Sgt. Ray Ward. Other motorists stopped to assist him. While that was happening, he was outside his car and was hit by a passing car on the highway between Waterloo and St. Jacobs, Ward said. Emergency services were called just before 6: 30 p.m. The female driver of the other vehicle received minor injuries in the collision. Police traffic officers closed the highway between King Street and the Sawmill Road roundabout after the collision. The road reopened by midnight.
      The investigation continues, Ward said.
