Waterloo Resident Had Been in Business There for 38 Years

A former Waterloo merchant and undertaker, J. K. Shinn, died at his home, 49 Menno street, Waterloo, today in his 80th year. Mr. Shinn had been engaged in business in Waterloo for 38 years when he retired four years ago. He had been in ill health for some time and was confined to his bed for the past four months. Suffering from the flu early this week, he contracted pneumonia, which caused his death. Of a kindly disposition, Mr. Shinn had made a host of friends in the community. He was particularly active in fraternal circles, but was interested and active also in various other affairs and organizations of the town.

      Given Veterans' Jewel

He was in his 60th year of Odd Fellowship, being a member of Nith Lodge, No. 96, I.O.O.F., New Hamburg, where he formerly resided. He was active for many years in Germania Lodge, No. 154. I.O.O.F., Waterloo and was presented with a Veterans' Jewel by the local lodge some years ago. For some time he was secretary-treasurer of the Odd Fellows Relief Association, now amalgamated with the Empire Life Insurance Company. He was a member of the Canadian Order of Foresters, being financial secretary of Waterloo Tent Hive of the Maccabees. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Waterloo and among other community organizations was a former member of the Waterloo Musical Society and secretary-treasurer of the Waterloo Rink Company. For some years too Mr. Shinn was an agent in Waterloo for The Record. Born in Woodbury, New Jersey, Mr. Shinn spent his boyhood in Philadelphia. He was married at St. Louis, Missouri, October 17, 1883. The late Mrs. Shinn was Augusta Beger who had resided in New Hamburg in her earlier years.

      Came Here in 1895

Mr. and Mrs. Shinn came to Canada in 1887 and resided in New Hamburg, Toronto and Amherst, Nova Scotia, before coming to Waterloo about 1895. Mr. Shinn entered the undertaking and furniture business in Waterloo at that time, first in a store in the City Hotel block. He continued in business until four years ago when he retired. The last number of years in business he was in partnership with J. A. Walsh in the firm of Shinn and Walsh occupying the store on King Street south beside the C. N. R. tracks. His wife, two daughters and one son predeceased him and he is survived by three sons, Fred and Carl in Kitchener, Max of Toronto and one daughter, (Emma) Mrs. Fred Weppler, at home. Furniture Business Sold
Mr. John Letter Purchase Entire Stock of J. K. Shinn & Co. and Will Continue the Business

A deal has been consummated whereby Mr. John Letter, Waterloo's well known contractor becomes the owner of the furniture business of J. K. Shinn & Co, conducted by Mr. Shinn for the past twelve years. Mr. Letter has purchased the entire stock and will in addition to continuing the business of picture framing enter into the upholstering business and also do repairing in this line of trade. It is the intention of the new proprietor to build a three-storey addition to the present building extending as far back as Queen street [later named Regina]. The firm will be known as John Letter and Son and the business will be in charge of his son, Mr. Norman Letter and Mr. Geo. Gleiser. Mr. Letter proposes carrying on an up-to-date and thoroughly equipped establishment, which will compare very favorably with the best store in Western Ontario. The well known business ability and enterprise of Mr. Letter are a sufficient index that the new venture upon which he has embarked will be attended with success. Mr. Shinn will continue in the undertaking business.
