    • Death of 2 students stuns Brevard school

February 11, 2006 By Laurin Sellers, Sentinel Staff Writer

MELBOURNE -- The sudden unrelated deaths of two seventh-graders just a day apart left classmates at Lyndon B. Johnson Middle School reeling on Friday.

Malasia Rowe was a cheerleader and athlete, who had broken school track records. Josh Diebel loved a good joke almost as much as he loved basketball. It was unclear whether the two 13-year-olds knew each other. But it was certain they were well-known and would be missed.

More than 200 students sought help from grief counselors as news of the deaths spread across campus Friday, said Sara T. Stern, a district spokeswoman. "There has been a lot of emotion today," said Larry Ascher, the school's seventh-grade guidance counselor. "Many kids this age have none or limited experience with death, usually an old person. But when it's somebody their own age, and two of them, it brings up a lot of thoughts and questions they don't have the maturity to deal with.

"Today certainly wasn't a typical school day."

Malasia collapsed outside a friend's home about three weeks ago and was rushed to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, where she was placed on life support, said Dawn Marcoux, a family friend. She died Wednesday of heart failure, said Marcoux, who described Malasia as a "beautiful, outgoing girl."

On Thursday, Josh was playing basketball on the sidelines near about 60 other students when he collapsed, vomited and lost consciousness, Stern said. He was pronounced dead at Wuesthoff Hospital. Lorne Diebel, the boy's father, said his son had passed out three times in the past two months. "We had him in for a slew of tests, and the doctor said he had low blood pressure," he said Friday. "It had been a huge relief because we felt that maybe it wasn't serious."

Although the physician had said it was OK for Josh to play basketball, he was not participating with the rest of the physical-education class when he collapsed, his father said. "The school was not comfortable with him playing and was erring on the side of caution," said Diebel, who praised the school staff and the teacher who tried to revive Josh.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. Josh's mother, Julie Diebel, said the family's faith is keeping them strong. "He was sensitive and kind-hearted, and we were blessed to have had the 13 years we had him," she said.
