  City archivist Jim Quantrell said the hotel is not found on the city's 1851 map and believes the hotel might have been built close to the Great Western Railway station to provide accommodation to visitors coming to the town by train. He believes the hotel may have been built in 1854-55, which coincides with the coming of the railway. On the city's 1867 map, there is a hotel on the site operated by William Bernhardt.
