    • Kitchener man faces first-degree murder trial in death of brother

      Waterloo Region Record

KITCHENER -A Kitchener man will stand trial on first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his brother.

Mohamed Younus, 44, showed no reaction as Justice Melanie Sopinka made the ruling on Wednesday.

Younus is charged with killing Shamsul Alamshah, 37, last Aug. 27.

A fight between two men broke out inside a townhouse unit at 101 Mooregate Cres., in the area of Victoria Street and Westmount Road, police previously said. The fight continued outside, where Alamshah was stabbed.

Sopinka's ruling came after a preliminary hearing to determine if there is enough evidence for the case to go to trial.

First-degree murder is defined as a planned and deliberate killing. A conviction carries an automatic life sentence with no possibility of parole for 25 years.

A trial date has not been set.

Kitchener man remains in jail in connection to death of his brother

by Liz Monteiro Waterloo Region Record

KITCHENER - A man is dead, his brother is charged with murder and a close-knit community of Burmese refugees is shocked by the tragedy.

Kitchener man Nur Hasim and chair of the Kitchener-based Canadian Burmese Rohingya Organization, said he got to know the victim, Shamsul Alamshah, when both men boarded a plane to Canada 10 years ago.

"He was a good person. He was a hard worker and didn't have conflicts with others. He was always thinking of the hardships of his people in Myanmar," Hasim said Wednesday.

The two men were living in separate refugee camps in Bangladesh after being forced to flee their country of Myanmar because of discrimination. Myanmar is formerly known as Burma.

Hasim and Alamshah, both members of Rohingya ethnic group, became friends here in Kitchener and attended the Waterloo mosque.

Alamshah, 37, was stabbed outside the home of his 43-year-old brother Mohammed Younus on Sunday afternoon.

Waterloo Regional Police say a fight between two men started inside Younus's townhouse unit on Mooregate Crescent at about 4: 45 p.m. The fight continued outside and emergency personnel were called to the complex after various neighbours called 911.

Alamshah was pronounced dead at St. Mary's General Hospital.

Younus faces a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the death. Younus appeared in court on Tuesday and returns to court next week. He remains in custody.

Hasim said other members of the local Rohingya community are shocked by Alamshah's death.

Hasim, who was out of town when he received the news, had to stop his car on the side of the road to cope with the tragic news.

"I had to stop my car and collect myself for a few minutes," said Hasim, who often worked with Alamshah in advocating for Rohingya rights.

Hasim, who works as an interpreter, leads a group that lobbies the federal government and raises awareness about the treatment of Rohingya Muslims who live in squalor in Bangladeshi camps on the border of Myanmar. The group was formed in 2008.

Hasim said he didn't see Alamshah as often recently because he was working in an automotive manufacturing job in Cambridge.

      Alamshah leaves behind his wife.

Hasim said Alamshah's brother, Mohammed Younus, came to Canada after Alamshah. He travelled to Kitchener with two other brothers.

All four brothers live in Kitchener. Alamshah was the youngest.....
