Mr. James Tales has returned from Quebec, where he had gone to see if the body of his father, who was lost in the Empress of Ireland disaster, was among those that have been recovered from the lost ship, but was unsuccessful in finding it among the 150 bodies he viewed at Quebec. The late Mr. Tales was bound on a visit to his former home in Market Deeping, Lincolnshire, England, accompanied by Mr. Blackham, of Peterboro, a friend of the family, who intended to be married at his former home and had booked passage for himself and bride to return to Canada in about six weeks, as Mr. Tales had also done. Mr. Blackham is also one of the lost. The official number of the lost passengers and crew is now placed at 1024, with 452 saved. Mr. Joseph Mallard, an employee of the Silversmiths Co., also intended to take passage on the ill-fated vessel but failed to secure it. He intends to leave for the old country in a few weeks.

New Hamburg Man Victim of Ill-fated Steamer

Matthew Tales, who had been living in New Hamburg for the past three years, was a passenger of the Empress of Ireland, when she sank in the St. Lawrenoe last Friday with such an appaling loss of life and is numbered among the drowned.

Mr, Tales left here a few weeks ago to visit his daughter in Haysville and his son William near Chatham, and booked with Toronto friends for a six weeks' trip to the Old Country, where six of his children reside.

Mr. Tales intended to come back to New Hamburg upon his return from England. While here be was employed as stableman at the Imperial Hotel and was very obliging and well known to the people of the neighborhood. He had been in this country for about ten years previous to coming to New Hamburg, when he resided in New Dundee.

He was 74 years of age and still hale and hearty, and was a devout member of the R. C. Church. His unfortunate end is regretted by his many friends here.

Another victim of the tragedy was Samuel Simpson, a young Englishman, who formerly was a farm hand for Mr. Ed. Sanderson near this town. He took passage with friends from Guelph.

One man from Stratford, Mr. A Treherne, and five Galt people are also among the lost.
