    _______________

    GERRIE, AGNES (Nee Bogue)

Death of Mrs. Adam Gerrie Sr.

In the township of Pilkington, on Friday, October 18, 1884. She had for a long time been a great sufferer of dropsy. About six months ago, while on a visit to the house of a friend, Mr. Campbell, near Elora, she was taken very ill and there she remained and died, having received every kindness at Mr. Campbell's house, from him, as well as from her relatives during her painful illness. She was born in Roxburghshire, Scotland in 1818 and about fifteen years later, emigrated to Canada. She resided for a number of years in the township of Woolwich in Waterloo Co., where nearly half a century ago, she married Mr. Gerrie. In 1856, the family removed to the Gore of Puslinch and lived there for twelve years. Then, they took up their residence on the 4th concession of Puslinch, near Downey's Schoolhouse for twelve years. About six years ago, they removed to Pilkington. She was best known in Puslinch, where she was much respected for her kind and benevolent disposition and her many acts of charity. She was always ready to help a neighbour in difficulty or distress and always willing to give food and shelter to the deserving stranger who came to her door. Of a lively disposition and gifted with much conversational power, she was a pleasant and entertaining companion. She leaves her husband and one son, Adam Gerrie Jr., one daughter, Mrs. Fowler* of Peterborough, who with her deceased sister, was well known in Guelph some years ago as accomplished vocalists. The funeral took place on Saturday, her body being taken to Winterbourne Cemetery.

-Information from the death certificate: Aged 66 years, she died of dropsy.

    Notes:

The Free Church branch, having no church building, held their services in the stone schoolhouse, now part of the residence of Mrs. Andrew Brown. The summer services were conducted largely by students of Knox College. Probably the winter services were carried on by themselves. I am told that Mr. Wm. Gerrie, Sr., was a good preacher and Mr. George (Sheriff) Davidson also belonged to that party. The Free Church building, known latterly as "the lecture room", was built in 1848 by William Mitchell as carpenter and George Cummings as mason. The deed for the lot was given by G. Davidson to William Mitchell, George Cummings, and Jas. Adamson, as trustees for the congregation, on the eighth day of March, 1852, for the sum of five shillings currency (about one dollar of our money). This was the first piece of real estate that became the possession of either congregation.
