Jacob Buerge was born in Bern, Switzerland (probably the canton of Bern, rather than the city) on Feb. 14, 1785. He and two of his brothers were orphaned. One brother remained in Switzerland. Jacob and his brother Peter came to America. On the trip Jacob met Elizabeth Grieser (or Greaser) from Alsace-Lorraine and married her about 1825. Jacob had lived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania for some time but must have joined the migration of Amish Mennonites who went to Canada in 1824 and the years following. Their oldest daughter Catherine was born in Canada in 1826. She was among the first white children to be born in the area. Jacob and Elizabeth settled on Lot 21 North Bleams Rd. This farm is now on the eastern side of the town of New Hamburg.
