A-1-35 Henry Degenhart: Last Will and Testament of Henry Degenhart, late of Mannheim, in the Township of Wilmot, written in the German language, and the same translated into English, and translation verified, by C. Enslin, Notary Public.

…Mannheim the 22rd February 1854. I Henry Degenhart make my Will for wife and children.

    (1) My wife, a born Mary Schafer, married to me the 27 February 1851 and shall have after my death the marriage bed wherein there is her feather cover, the small rocking chair and what she owns herself in clothing.

    (2) She shall have two hundred dollars but she must wait till the Executors will have received the money, which lasts about three years. (3) Lewis Degenhart shall have my writing desk.

    (4) Catharine and Elizabeth shall have their bureaus and divide the white linen and what else belongs to them. Elizabeth and Catharine shall select for themselves each one bed.

    (5) Shall M. Degenhart, because she had received nothing, have thirty dollars advance, and the Executors and Relatives do care for her, because she is yet a minor.

    (6) The Brick house with barn and lot, Lewis, Catharine and Elizabeth shall draw the lot for the same six weeks before the termination of the four years for which it is given in Rent, and value the same at $1,600, I say sixteen hundred dollars, which will be divided in equal portions and bear 400 for each of my four children and the wife has nothing to do therewith.

    (7) The upper and lower house with lots can be sold… The seven acres from Peter Horner are serviceable to the Tavern, may take the seven acres to the same, make one hundred and eighty dollars, say $180 with costs, at which I value them in four equal portions, for the four children.

    (8) After my death shall be sold all the house and kitchen furniture and what else is on hand and two complete beds with feather covers and quilts thereto, then seven blankets and if John Schader allows the 3 beds which he also has with the Lean to be sold by the Executors at the vendue [Within Amish and Old Order Mennonite tradition, the word Vendu is used for Auction sale and derives from French.] Then he shall have deducted from his Rent five dollars each year, but if he don't do, then they must as now be delivered up.

    (9) All the aforesaid shall be sold after common usage, but in case my children buy something their Notes shall be put payable in two years, then it goes with interest.

    (10) I chose to me the subscriber as Executor Adam Bricker and Michael Stoltz, all of the Township line of Wilmot.

    (11) But in case (one) departs life between time John Frantz[sic] shall take his place. The white linen and the fine German coffee service which Catharine and Elizabeth divide, the Executors and Relatives may value so that little Mary be not overreached, but gets her share thereof. Whether second mother Mary buys at the venue, the amount goes off from her two hundred dollars.

    (12) Shall cow, stove and whatever else is on hand be sold, that is my will…
