He was born in Oberkirch, Grand Duchy of Baden, and came to Canada approximately 60 years ago where he followed the organ-building trade with long-dead Mr. Hager in Preston, and later on in Hamilton; then, he had a furniture factory in Plattsville with Mr. Michael Gilles. For several years, he had a restaurant in Elmira and also built organs; recently however, he lived in retirement. Death of Mrs. Vogt.

Mrs. Marianna Zingg Vogt, one of Elmira's beloved ladies and oldest resident, passed away peacefully at her home Sunday afternoon, June 28th, in her 95th year, death being due to the infirmities of old age. The funeral was held on Tuesday and was largely attended by relatives and friends, many of whom came-from a distance.

The late Mrs. Vogt was born in Switzerland, January 1st, 1831, and came to America with her parents when three years of age, locating at Buffalo. Several years later they moved to Preston, then a village of seven houses, and her father, Zingg, increased the number erecting seven more homes. On May 27, 1848, she married George Vogt. who was a member of the firm of Vogt and Hagen, organ builders. The company moved to Hamilton later when Mr. Vogt sold out his interests and located at Washington, Oxford County, where he manufactured furniture, and a few years later moved to Elmira. During her long life she witnessed many changes, some of which were the advent of the railway locomotive, telegraph, steam driven machinery, the tallow candle and the coal oil lamp replaced by electricity, and the needle by the sewing machine.

Of a family of eleven children six survive to mourn the loss of a mother who set a high standard, and she was most sincerely loved and honored by the family and all who were privileged to have her acquaintance. There survive Dr. A. S. Vogt of Toronto, Oscar H. Vogt of Elmira, Mrs. Philip Christman, Elmira, Mrs. Sol. H. Eby of St. Thomas, Mrs. George H. Ruppel of Elmira and Mrs. C. K. Jansen of Galt. Mrs. Vogt is also survived by a sister, grandchildren and 7 great grand-children.
