    Notes:

Rev. Henry Goudie, "was born January, 16th, 1851. When a young man he was converted and joined himself with the Mennonite Brethren in Christ. Some years ago he entered the ministry and has up to the present proved himself an able minister in winning souls for Christ. His sermons are clear, instructive and full of Spirit. None of those dry and merely a repetition of old worn-out-phrase sermons but are full of life and very impressive. He is well received by all parties. During his three years labor in Berlin he has done much good among all classes. After the expiration of the third year (March, 1895) in Berlin, the conference had him stationed at Elmwood, Ontario, where he now resides. He is married to Sarah Wildfong and has a family of seven children".

    Breslau Missionary Church

Meetings are reported to have been held in 1872 in a building at the corner of Woolwich Street and Mader Lane by a group who were followers of Solomon Eby. Conferences to consider reorganization of the church were held in 1874 and 1875, the most important of which was considered to have been the meeting at the Bloomingdale Mennonite Church on May 23, 1875. Members of the New Mennonites and the Reforming (or Reformed) Mennonites joined together at that meeting as the United Mennonites. At a meeting in Blair in 1879 a union, called the Evangelical United Mennonites, was formed from the United Mennonites and the Evangelical Mennonites. Four years later, in 1883, the Ohio Brethren in Christ (Tunker) joined with the Evangelical United Mennonites to form the Mennonite Brethren in Christ.

Dedication services were held on Christmas Day, 1882, for the new Breslau Mennonite Church which had been built during the year. Henry Goudie was minister to the congregation from 1881-1884. He was followed by Peter Geiger (1884-1885) and Frank Moyer (1885-1886). Solomon Eby, a member of the congregation who was minister from 1886-1889, had been one of the organizers on May 15, 1874 of the Reforming Mennonites.

On May 6, 1959 a decision was made to construct an 1800 square foot addition to the church. The sanctuary was enlarged and new pews were installed in 1978; dedication was in September of that year. Rev. Leonard DeWitt, president of the Missionary Church was guest speaker on Sunday, November 21, 1982, when the church's 100th Anniversary service was held. Of interest: the sign eteched in the glass above the doors on the northwest side of the back section reads "United Missionary Church."

    Canadian Goudies

One of the first Goudies to remove to Canada was Hugh, a farmer, who was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1792. He was a direct descendant of the ancient family that for four hundred years was settled at Craigie Mill, Parish of Galston. In 1815 he married Jane Aird, came to Canada in 1828, and settled near the village of Guelph, one year after the first tree had been cut in that city. There he resided until about 1850 when he went to live with his son David near Breslau in Waterloo County. He died in 1874, aged 82 years. His wife died in 1855. They had a family of seven children, two of whom were boys, David and John. The daughters were Margaret (Mrs. Wm. McConnell), Martha (Mrs. James Dickson), Jane (Mrs. Frank Diggins), and Agnes (Mrs. Thomas Tucker).

David (II), eldest son of Hugh and Jane Aird Goudie, was born in 1816. He was twice married, first to Sarah Fathers, who died in 1842, leaving one daughter, Emily (Mrs. Sam. Warner). His second wife was Nancy Warner. They first lived near Hespeler, then near Breslau. They had a family of ten children, viz., Benjamin, who died aged two years; John (Margaret Cober), David, (see below); Rev. Henry, who married Sarah Wildfong and lived at Didsbury, Alta.; Isaac (see below); Abraham (Lydia Snyder); Tobias; James (Caroline Snyder); Jacob (Rebecca Hambling), and Rev. Samuel (Miss E. J. Smith).

Hitching), a missionary in Africa; William and Alfred, both of whom died young; Minnie (Rev. W. O. Mendell), now residing at Elora, Ont.; George (Miss Adams); Ida (Chas. Hutchins); Orlando (Miss Evelyn); Stanley Irvin (Miss Brittain).

He is at present residing in Kitchener, having reached the age of 85. In 1883 he married Susannah Witmer, daughter of Joseph and Catharine Sherk Witmer. To them were born five children: Arthur (see below); Robert J. (see below); Alice L.; Janet, who married Rev. James Semple, and Estelle..

Arthur Russell Goudie (IV), eldest son of Isaac and Susannah Witmer Goudie, was born near Preston in 1884. At present he is one of Kitchener's leading business men. During his business career he has found time to serve local and municipal interests with credit to himself and the general satisfaction of his associates. In 1909 he married Alice M. Hugh Goudie, "All the Goudies of this county are descendants of Hugh Goudie who was born near Edinburgh, Scotland, January 12th, 1792. He was married to Jane Ayer about the year 1815. On May 28th, 1816 was born their eldest son, David, who came to Canada with his parents in 1828. They settled where now is situated the city of Guelph. Soon after Mr. and Mrs. Goudie's arrival in Canada, young David had to make use of the "axe" and "plow" instead of the "books" and "slates" as boys now-a-days do. He was engaged with Jacob Schneider of Bloomingdale for three and a half years. From here he went to Henry Sniders, thence to old Peter Erb. From here he went to Mr. Vance's, near Hespeler, thence to Groh's. After leaving Waterloo County he went to Cayuga where he resided for a short time, then again returned to Waterloo County where he has since resided. At present they reside about two miles south of Breslau, on the west side of the Preston Road. Mr. Goudie is quite an active and intelligent man yet, considering his age and great amount of labor he has performed since his boyhood days. He possesses all those sterling qualities which have made the name of "Scotchman" synonymous with business integrity, sterling honesty, successful in all undertakings, lovers of law and order, and, best of all, worshippers of the true and living God. On June 17th, 1841, he was married to Sarah Fathers who was born October 16th, 1822, and died at Cayuga, Ontario, August 28th, 1842, leaving one daughter named Emily who was born May 18th, 1842. She is married to Samuel Wanner, a farmer. They reside in Colbourne Township, Huron County, and have a family of two sons named David and George. After the decease of Mrs. Goudie he was again married, December 18th, 1843, to Nancy, daughter of Tobias and Catharine (Stricker) Wanner. She was born February 27th, 1825. To Mr. Goudie and his second wife was born a family of ten children"

    Sad Affair near Hespeler
    From our own Correspondent

A most melancholy event took place on Sunday morning near the R.R. track about 1-1/2 miles above Hespeler. An old man said to be about 86 years of age of the name of Musser, occupied two apartments by himself, contiguous to the farm house in which his daughter, son-in-law and family resided. It was customary for some of the family before retiring for the night to visit the old man's rooms. On looking in on Sunday night at bedtime, he was found asleep and left undisturbed. About 2 o'clock on Sunday morning the family was aroused by the scream of one of the children who had been awaked by the suffocating influence of smoke in the house. They had barely time to make their escape from the house before it was enveloped in flames, and without securing even sufficient clothing. The rooms occupied by the old man were already burnt down, and on Dr. Swan, being called, all that could be found of the old man were a few charred bones, which were collected into a box of about a foot square. The fire is supposed to have been entirely accidental, but how it originated cannot be ascertained. Dr. Swan supposes from the remains of the old man being found near the door of the apartment in which he slept, that he had been suffocated and fallen down in an attempt to gain the door. An inquest was held on Monday when a verdict in accordance with the above facts were returned.
