    Description: Frederick Holwell Passed Away
Close of Useful and Active Life

The passing away of Mr. Frederick Holwell at his home in Baden last Thursday afternoon, caused a deep feeling of regret among a very large circle of friends. His condition had been low for some days and his death came peacefully. The late Mr. Holwell was one of the most prominent men of the village and community, and took deep interest in public affairs. His kindly manners won him a large circle of friends and his unusual ability and integrity commanded the respect of all. The late Mr. Holwell was born in the city of Brantford on March 4th, 1845, thus reaching the age of 71 years, 9 months and 29 days. In his early days he came to Petersburg, where he was operator and later conducted the hostelry. He was elected reeve of Wilmot in 1883 and was successively re-elected until 1888, when he resigned to accept the clerkship of the Township. At this time he removed to Baden, since when he had been one of the foremost public spirited men of the village. After holding the clerkship for twenty-seven years, he relinquished this position as well as the treasurership, which he held for a number of years, last December on account of his failing health. He was also for many years secretary-treasurer of the Wilmot Agricultural Society. In politics he was a staunch Conservative and contested this riding in the election of 1886 against the late Isaac Master. He was appointed Postmaster of Baden twenty-six years ago, and in this capacity was an obliging public servant and held the position up to the time of his demise. The late Mr. Holwell was a member of the A. F. & A. M., being a past District Deputy Grand Master. He was also a member of the K.O.T.M. and a Presbyterian in religion. He was married to Miss Barbara Ernst, daughter of the late Peter Ernst, of Petersburg, and leaves his sorrowing widow, four sons and four daughters to mourn the loss of an indulgent and loving husband and father. The children are, Fred and Harry, of Toronto, William, of Brampton, Walter, Mrs. G. S. Fowler, Mrs. John P. Livingston, and Misses Elizabeth and Alfreda, of Baden. The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon from his late home to the Baden Cemetery. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Mr. Lynn, of Kitchener. The deceased was buried with Masonic honors, over one hundred members from the lodges of the surrounding towns attending. The bereaved family have the sympathy of their many friends in their sad loss.

    Notes:

    The Late John Ernst

John Ernst, Sr., who died at New Hamburg on the 1st inst., was born at Grand Village, near Belford, Lorraine, France, on the 4th of Dec., 1807. He emigrated to America in the year 1827, landing in New York in the same year, where he remained but one year, long enough to enable him to learn the English language somewhat. He came to Wilmot township in 1838 where he took up land, cleared his lot, and remained on the same for a long time. During his time there the cholera (1837) broke out, and while the sad epidemic lasted he helped to bury many of his neighbours, even making coffins from rough lumber and taking them to the burying ground with his ox team, and attending to the burial all by himself. After that he removed to Petersburg, where he engaged in the general store business and hotel keeping. Some time after that he owned and run the New Dundee mills, also the tannery at Petersburg. He was a man of good judgement, and a man on whose word you could rely. Any appointment he made he was sure to fulfill; he was a man of temperate habits although a hotel keeper for over 40 years. Some years ago he withdrew from actual business pursuits, but was always ready to enter into conversation on the topics of the day, as well as render any assistance where needed if at all in his power to do so. About six weeks ago he was attacked with bronchitis, then heart trouble set in from which he never rallied. Although far advanced in years he bore his sufferings with Christian fortitude and was prepared to meet his Maker. In years gone by he held different municipal offices, was Justice of the Peace and also issuer of marriage licences. He was postmaster at Petersburg for 44 years, and was one of the first postmasters in the County of Waterloo. In politics he was a staunch Conservative, and was ever ready to do a good turn for his party. He belonged to the Masonic fraternity and was an old member of that body. His remains were taken to Petersburg, for internment on Wednesday Feb. 3rd. He leaves one daughter and three sons to mourn his loss; his wife preceded him some fifteen years ago.
