    HENRY SCHMIDT

Here is one of the clever and well- known citizens of Wilmot township living in easy and comfortable circumstances, but who has climbed to that position by degrees and hard knocks. He was not like many of his fellow citizens, born with a silver spoon in his mouth, but was gifted with more than average energy and a knack of knowing how to profit by what he undertook to do. Having always been liberal and generous with his earnings It has frequently been a matter of surprise to skeptical neighbors how gradually he has prospered, and in the end having accumulated sufficient of this world's goods so that he and his industrious wife may live independently in the latter years of their earthly career, and at the same time see their children well provided for, not withstanding the fact that Mr. Schmidt possesses a character that is stainless, so far as honorable business transactions with his fellowmen are concerned.

Henry Schmidt was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, September 5, 1850, being a son of the late Henry Alexander Hartwig Martin Schmidt, a wagon maker by trade. Young Henry's mother, whose maiden name was Mary Rode, died when he was about five years of age. His father married a second time. The stepmother died of smallpox in 1873.

In the fall of 1863 the Schmidt family departed from their native land bound for Canada, taking a train from Weissmer to Hamburg, where they took a vessel. They were eleven weeks on the Atlantic, not including one week their ship was in quarantine off Pearl Island owing to sickness. on board. After reaching Quebec they came on to New Hamburg, and from which place they finally moved to Mannheim, their residence in the former place being about two months. In Mannheim the elder Schmidt purchased seventeen acres of land, which he tilled in addition to working at his trade, until he retired in 1873, when he took up his home with Henry, jr., who had just been married and founded the home he at present occupies, lot No.6, one mile and a half west of Mannheim. Here he lived until his demise, which occurred about fifteen years ago, aged 69 years.

Mrs. Schmidt's maiden name was Hannah Spaetzel, she being a daughter of the late William Spaetzel, one of the prominent pioneers of Wilmot township. She was born December 25, 1848. The results of their union are eight children, as follows: Tillie is the wife of Titus Sheard, of near Berlin; Hannah is the wife of Ephraim Hillgartner, farmer, Betchen's Corners; Henry D., at home; William and Sophia, deceased; John, Laura and Edward at home. The family are members of the Lutheran church.

The Schmidt farm was originally sixty acres, but other tracts have been added and now it comprises eighty acres. The original tract was procured from the Canada Company by the late William Spaetzel about the year 1851. It is a fertile tract of land

and has been vastly improved since Mr. Schmidt has owned it. One of the most valuable features is a powerful spring of pure cold water, and it is utilized to the best advantage for cooling milk and supplying the cattle. Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt are among the many industrious tillers of the soil who on every Saturday of each week have something towards supplying the wants of the county town's large army of consumers. They attend the market every Saturday, rain or shine, and most invariably find a vigorous demand for all their produce.

It is hardly probable that we will find a man in the county who has been a greater number of years engaged in threshing than Henry Schmidt. For a period of twenty-nine years he has followed threshing after each harvest. In the first five years of that time he had a partner, but during the past twenty-five years he has been on his own hook. He is now using his fifth engine and seventh separator, besides two clover machines. He first began with a Preston horse-power, finally adopting steam in 1886. The highest number of days he has threshed in one season, clover and grain together, was 135, from July 22 to March 22, 1879. The least number of days was 70, that being this year, against 90 last year,
and 96 1-2 two years ago. He also does a considerable amount of wood sawing. He keeps five head of good work horses, and in the line of hogs and cattle is well up with the average according to the number of acres cultivated. He is prepared for emergencies in case of breakage, having on the premises a well equipped blacksmith shop, which he is naturally prepared to turn to good account when the occasion demands it.

In his domestic relations Mr. Schmidt is also one of our most fortunate farmers for the reason that he has a wife who is not afraid of hard work, and knows how to economize without resorting to miserly or selfish principles. Their home is one of peace and plenty, and typical German hospitality prevails within its sacred precincts. Mr. Schmidt would not be taken for a native of Germany by one unacquainted with the facts on account of his efficient mastery of the English language. He has numerous friends, both among his fellow-countrymen and those of opposite nationality. He is invariably equipped for a friendly chat in either the German or English language, and the visitor who calls at his home will find in him a generous-hearted soul and interesting entertainer.
