    Notes:

James Kersell, Flour, Feed and Grain, Main Street - The trade in flour, feed and grain, is a very important one in Galt, and considerable capital is employed in its operations, and numbers are given employment. Situated in the centre of a magnificent farming country, and with most favored of shipping facilities, Galt offers every advantage to its members who deal in these products. Among those who are prominently identified with this business is Mr. James Kersell, whose store is located on Main Street. This business, although only started last June, has made rapid development, and is already taking an enviable position in this line. Mr. Kersell carries all kinds of flour, feed and grain, and makes a specialty of dealing in seeds, which he purchases direct from the farmers; the flour and other products he also purchases from the farmers as well as by the carload when advantages are to be obtained. With the farmers he makes reciprocal trades, both thus obtaining a benefit. The premises occupied are 28x50 feet in dimensions, and suitably fitted up with bins and other necessary arrangements for the proper keeping of stock. Previous to coming to Galt Mr. Kersell ran a farm in Dumfries. He is a Canadian by birth, and a thorough-going business man.

    Notes:

Death of a Former Resident of Puslinch

Word was sent to Mr. Stirton, Postmaster of the death of William Beattie of West Dumfries, early Thursday morning, in his 69th year. He will be remembered by the older residents of Guelph and Puslinch as the eldest son of Francis Beattie, who settled in Puslinch in the year 1835. After he grew up, he farmed for a good many years in Puslinch and about twenty years ago, moved to Waterloo County, where he continued farming. He had been failing for some time but last Saturday, he was seized with paralysis, which gradually spread all over the body. He was of a quiet, kindly disposition, scrupulously honest and honourable in all his dealings and was held in the highest respect by all who knew him. He leaves a widow and nine children all of whom were present at his death except one daughter and two sons. One of his sons, Rev. Andrew Beattie is a Presbyterian minister in New York City. Mr. Beattie was buried on Saturday.

Death of Mr. William Beattie, of Dickie Settlement

This old and respected resident of this vicinity died yesterday (Thursday) morning, after a short illness. Mr. Beattie came from Scotland in 1834, and after spending some time in the employ of the Messrs. Ferrie, at Doon, took up a farm in Puslinch, on which he resided for some years. He then removed to another farm, which he purchased near Kossuth, leaving which, he purchased the farm on which he died, and on which he has resided for nineteen years. Mr. Beattie was in his 60th year. He leaves a widow and ten children, eight sons and two daughters, viz. - Francis, farmer, near Blair; John, agent of the Ingersoll Manufacturing Company; William, farmer, town-line, Waterloo; Revd. Andrew Beattie, Pastor of Church of Sea and Land, New York City; Robert, of Lakeport, California; Hugh, residing on the homestead; David, teacher, Crosshill; Mrs. James Kersell, Santa Clara, Cal.; and Mrs. Isaac Clemens, of Newton, Mornington Township.

Mr. Beattie has been in rather poor health for some time. On Friday last he attended the funeral of Mr. Thos. Marshall's daughter, the exertion and exposure, it is supposed, bringing on an attack of paralysis, under which he sank. His funeral will take place on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, to Mount View Cemetery.

    Notes:

    Rapidly Following Deaths

It is but a little more than a week ago that we were called upon to chronicle the death of Mr. Alexander Cranston, of this town, and today the painful duty devolves upon us of saying that, rapidly following him, came first, on Friday last, the death of his aged mother, in her 90th year, and on Saturday the death of his sister, Mrs. John Veitch, aged 66 years. The death of the aged lady, Mrs. Cranston, was not unexpected, as for some time she had been failing; but that of Mrs. Veitch was quite sudden. She had been ailing for a few days with a chest trouble to which she was somewhat subject, but not so seriously as to cause uneasiness amongst her relatives. On Friday, however, she became worse and from that time rapidly sank until her death on Saturday morning. This lady was the widow of the late John Veitch, being the eldest of her family. Of her own children there are living Mrs. John Cant, Mrs. Thos. McDougall, Mrs. John Blackwood, Miss Agnes Veitch, Mr. Robert Veitch, Mr. James Veitch, (the latter having been compelled by illness to come home for a short time,) and Mr. Alexander Veitch, of Nevada. The deaths of two of her sons, - William, in Galt, and John, in Nevada, - will be fresh in the minds of many of their old school fellows. Both had grown to manhood and both, although wide travelers, had always looked upon this as their home, coming now and again to renew the friendships of their youth.

Mrs. Cranston was buried on Saturday by the side of her husband in the old cemetery at Cedar Creek. Of this lady's descendant's there are 48 great0grandchildren. \endash The funeral of Mrs. Veitch took place on Monday, her remains being interred in Galt cemetery.

BEATTIE, FRANCIS Sudden Death in Puslinch

An old and much respected resident of Puslinch, very suddenly, on Thursday, October 8, 1868. He attended to his cattle in the morning and was then apparently in his ordinary health. But on coming into the house, he fell senseless on the floor and never rallied but died about midnight. It is believed that the cause was a paralytic stroke. He had been a resident of Puslinch for about thirty years.
