James Davidson came to Winterbourne in 1834, from Aberdeen where he had been engaged in the cotton manufacturing. He was born at Walthamstow, Essex, England, on the 31st of March 1776. His wife was Elspet Blackhall, born at Aberdeen in 1777.

The family lived in a log house on the same lot as that upon which now stands the Rev. A. M. Hamilton's residence. This was known as Lower Woolwich post office while the Davidson's had it, and old Captain Smith carried the mail twice a week from Preston. The log house was pulled down about the year 1860 by our old friend Sandy Imlay, who is now living in Winterbourne.

In the Davidson family there were : John, James, William, Alexander, Ann, Elizabeth, Isabella, Mary, and Elsie. All except Ann and Alexander had lived at Winterbourne. Ann was the eldest and she was married in 1824 to Alexander Allan, a lawyer in the city of Aberdeen. They came to Canada in 1843 and lived near Preston. Mr. Allan was the first Superintendent of Schools in the Wellington District, and held that position until 1853, when the County of Waterloo was set apart, and was the first Village Clerk of Preston. He died in 1855, and his wife died at Salem in 1878. One of their sons, Absalom Shade Allan, was M. P. P. for West Wellington from 1886 to 1894, and is now Sheriff of the County of Wellington. The late William Allan, of Salem was another son.

Isabella married Absalom Shade, the man who in company with the Hon. William Dickson founded the town of Galt in 1816. She afterwards married Dean Boomer and resided in London, Ontario. Mary married John Geddes, son of the late Andrew Geddes, Crown Land Agent at Elora. Elsie married William McKenzie and they went back to Scotland and lived at his estate " Fortrie," near Aberdeen. William was a merchant in Liverpool, and Alexander was a merchant in Malta. John was a banker in Galt, and was afterwards Postmaster. His wife was a sister of the late Dr. Tassie of Galt.

James Davidson, sr., about 1845, removed to Galt and died at Spring Hill on the fifteenth of August, 1852, the result of being injured by a runaway team of horses. His wife died on the sixth of August 1853, aged seventy-six years.
